Life and value orientations of Turkish university students.

This study investigated the value orientations of optimists and pessimists and the value structures of each group. The Life Orientation Test and the Rokeach Value Survey were administered to 285 university students in Ankara, Turkey. Results indicated that there were differences in the value orientations of optimists and pessimists. The examination of value structures of optimists and pessimists revealed that optimists were likely to give priority to self-expansion, while pessimists tended toward self-restriction.

Half-life determination of 88Y and 89Sr.

Half-life measurements have been carried out at LNHB for 88Y using a 4pi gamma-ionisation chamber and for 89Sr using a proportional counter. The determined half-life values and associated standard uncertainties are 106.63 +/- 0.05 d for 88Y and 50.65 +/- 0.05 d for 89Sr, being consistent with relevant values reported in literature. Based on the present results and relevant literature values revised recommended half-life values and associated standard uncertainties are proposed, viz. 106.626 +/- 0.021 d for 88Y and 50.57 +/- 0.03 d for 89Sr.

Characterization of de-emulsification capabilities of a Micrococcus species.

Effect of post harvest washing as well as cell concentration on de-emulsification characteristics of an isolated Micrococcus species has been tested with Tween 60 Span 60 stabilised oil in water (o/w) and L-92 pluronic surfactant stabilised water in oil (w/o) model emulsions (kerosene water). The cells used were 140 h old and grown under submerged conditions at 37 degrees C in a medium containing n-tetradecane (4% v/v) as the carbon source. The harvested bacterial cells when in an unwashed condition (at a cell concentration of 2 mg/ml of emulsion) were found to de-emulsify the o/w system at a much faster rate than the w/o system exhibiting half-life values for the respective system as 10.2 and 127.7 h. Post harvest washing of the cells with any lipid solubilising solvent (n-pentane, n-hexane, kerosene, chloroform-methanol-water (CMW)) yielded a decrease in their de-emulsification power for w/o emulsion. But the decay of o/w emulsion became faster with n-pentane- and kerosene-washed cells as evident from their corresponding half-life values of 3.3 and 4.6 h. Compared to the w/o system, an increase in the concentration of kerosene-washed cell had a direct effect on de-emulsification for the o/w system. For cell concentrations of 2, 3 and 4 mg/ml of the emulsion, the half-life values for the w/o system were 364.8, 442.0 and 454.9 h, respectively. For 2 and 4 mg/ml cell contents, the half-life values for the o/w system were 4.6 and 1.0 h. The decay of both the emulsions was very slow or even incomplete for cell concentrations less than 2 mg/ml. De-emulsifying capacity of the n-tetradecane grown Micrococcus species towards o/w model emulsion improved considerably after washing the cells with n-pentane and kerosene, and use of kerosene-washed cells (4 mg/ml) reduced the half-life to 1 h.

Life: quality, value and justice.

The claim is questioned that QALYs (quality adjusted life years) provide an effective measure of beneficial health care and of cost-effective and or efficient health care and allow for a morally defensible way of distributing scarce health resources. It is argued the QALYs: (1) fallaciously value time lived instead of individual lives; (2) take an excessively narrow view of what quality of life might be; and finally and perhaps most importantly (3) they are unjust.

The value of life: individual preferences and social choice. A comment to Magnus Johannesson.

In order to avoid undue discrimination of disabled people, we have suggested that all life years gained by the disabled should count as 1 in QALY calculations as long as the health states in question are preferred to being dead by those concerned. Johannesson noted that such a convention could lead to inconsistencies between societal and individual preferences. We believe the problem derives from the structure of preferences in the real world, rather than from our specific choice of model. The inconsistency is at any rate a much smaller practical problem than Johannesson suggests. Johannesson's alternative model has some virtues, but it does not resolve the inconsistency problem. It also leads to counter intuitive results.

Radioimmunoassay of plasma ethinylestradiol in the presence of circulating norethindrone.

A reliable radioimmunoassay (RIA) for the measurement of ethinylestradiol (EE2) in plasma after the separation of norethindrone (NET) by column chromatography has been developed. The procedure involves diethyl ether extraction, followed by celite column partition chromatography to separate NET from EE2. An antiserum against ethinylestradiol-7-(3-thiopropionic acid)-bovine serum albumin conjugate was employed. Tritiated EE2 was used as the radioligand. The separation of bound from free 3H-EE2 was carried out with dextran-coated charcoal. This RIA procedure was used to measure plasma EE2 at specified time intervals in three women following oral administration of a tablet containing EE2 (0.12 mg) and NET (1.0 mg). The results show that EE2 is rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak concentrations of plasma EE2 were reached within 1.0 to 1.5 hours and then declined biphasically. The EE2 alpha phase half-life values in three subjects were 1.5, 2.8 and 3.8 hours. By comparison, the half-life values for the beta phase for the same three women were 6.2, 12.3 and 14.5 hours, respectively. Plasma samples were also analyzed for NET by RIA. The half-life values for the beta phase for EE2 and NET in the three subjects were similar.

Persistence and degradation of metalaxyl, mancozeb fungicides and its metabolite ethylenethiourea in soils.

The degradation pattern of metalaxyl, mancozeb and its metabolite ethylenethiourea (ETU) residues indicated a close correspondence to first order exponential degradation kinetics in soils. Degradation of fungicides in soils was predominantly biological as well as chemical in nature. Slower degradation ofmetalaxyl was noticed in the soils and their half-life values were higher than mancozeb and ETU as evident by wide range of half-life values from 41.24 to 165.11 days. In case of metalaxyl, Hiriyur soil was found to be superior in degrading the metalaxyl. Lower persistence of mancozeb and ETU was observed in soils resulting in rapid rate of degradation at smaller half-life values as compared to metalaxyl indicating the faster degradation of mancozeb and ETU. In mancozeb applied soils, the ETU formation was increased up to 30 days of incubation and thereafter it declined. Amongsoils, degradation of either mancozeb or ETU is not influenced by soil types. However, mancozeb persistence was higher in Hiriyur soils than Chettalli and Bangalore soils.

Limitations of the methods used for calculating quality-adjusted life-year values.

OBJECTIVE: To test the validity of the techniques used to calculate quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) values based on utility functions, using a real population dataset. DESIGN: Using the standard gamble technique, we gathered the preferences of a population sample of 189 individuals on a combination of probabilities concerning four simple health states (no physical disability, limp, walk with crutches and need a wheelchair), and three life-year spans (5, 10 and 15 years). Each of the four assumptions of the multiplicative model was tested based on the results of the experiment. RESULTS: The utility of the health state "limp" was high at 0.89 and that of "walk with crutches" only slightly lower at 0.85. However, of the 189 individuals, only 57 are not in contradiction with the assumption of mutual utility independence since they strictly preferred (15 years, "need a wheelchair") over (10 years, "need a wheelchair") and (15 years, "need a wheelchair") over (5 years, "need a wheelchair"). For these 57 individuals, the results of this study do not fit the assumptions underpinning the multiplicative model. CONCLUSION: This work suggests that the techniques used as a basis from which to calculate QALY values are flawed. In particular, the underlying assumptions of the multiattribute utility model do not correspond to behaviour patterns observed in a real population. It therefore appears that use of the QALY technique should be questioned in healthcare decision-making settings.

Pharmacokinetics of ofloxacin in serum and vitreous humor of albino and pigmented rabbits.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of ofloxacin in serum and vitreous humor samples from albino and pigmented rabbits by using a recently described animal model which permits robust estimation of parameter values. The drug was administered to rabbits intravenously, multiple vitreous humor and serum samples were taken from each rabbit, and the vitreous humor and serum samples were assayed by high-pressure liquid chromatography. The pharmacokinetic parameters were determined with RSTRIP, an iterative, nonlinear, weighted, least-squares regression program. Eight New Zealand White rabbits and eight Dutch Belted rabbits (split into single-dose and multiple-dose groups) were investigated in this study. The value of penetration into the vitreous humor of albino rabbits (n = 6) was 32.6% +/- 2.12%, with terminal-elimination half-life values of 3.21 and 2.39 h, respectively, for vitreous humor and serum. In pigmented rabbits after a single dose (n = 3) and with a steady-state concentration of drug in serum (n = 4), penetration values were similar, at 30.4% +/- 2.98% and 30.0% +/- 4.12%, respectively (P > 0.10). Following a single dose of ofloxacin, pigmented animals had elimination half-life values from serum and vitreous humor of 2.64 and 4.32 h, respectively. After steady state was achieved, half-life values for serum and vitreous humor were 3.12 and 6.05 h, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A method to determine a non-economic personal value of life.

This paper presents a method for estimating a non-monetary personal value for death in the context of a decision problem. The method evolved from a case study of a personal decision strategy for choosing whether to receive the swine influenza vaccine, based on the predicted epidemic in the United States in the fall of 1976. Rather than dealing with the decision-maker's assessments of utilities associated with extreme outcomes such as one's own death, the basic approach considers probabilities representing marginal reductions in the probability of death. An application to the swine influenza decision is included.

[Studies on the effects of intravenous administration of glucose, fructose, invertose and sorbitol on various blood constituents of blood plasma (monosaccharides, insulin, lactate, pyruvate and free fatty acids as well as glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase) in the horse].

Horses were examined for the behaviour of various blood constituents prior to and following infusions of solutions of glucose, fructose, invertose, and sorbitol. Infusion of 0.5 g/kg live weight glucose to six horses was followed by half-life variation between eleven and 23 minutes. Subsequent infusion of invertose to the same animals usually caused prolongation of glucose half-life. Half-life values were between 17 and 33 minutes for fructose and between 21 and 80 minutes for glucose. Infusion of 0.5 g/kg live weight fructose to two horses was followed by half-life values between 17 and 18 minutes, while the half-life values of sugar alcohol were 16, 16, 27, and 29 minutes in four horses who had received sorbitol. Sugar or sorbitol infusion was not followed by substantive change of lactate and pyruvate concentrations in the blood or free fatty acids in the blood plasma or GOT activity. The rise of insulin in the blood plasma was differentiated. Invertose and sorbitol solutions, consequently, can be recommended for application to horses.

Elimination half-lives of selected polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans in breast-fed human infants.

Elimination half-life estimates for several polychlorinated dibenzodioxins/furans (PCDD/F) were calculated by modeling the blood and breast milk concentrations in two breast-fed human infants as reported by Abraham et al. (1996, 1998). Our analysis differs from that of other investigators in that we analyzed individual dioxin and furan congeners while the other studies considered TCDD only and we determined the half-lives in infants, rather than simply predicting body burdens in infants and older children. The average half-life values for each consistently measurable congener were determined to be less than about 6 mo and did not vary substantially between the two infants studied. The average elimination half-life values for 2,3,7,8-tetraCDD, 1,2,3,7,8-pentaCDD, 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexaCDD, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-heptaCDD, and octaCDD were 0.40, 0.32, 0.39, 0.32, and 0.46 yr, respectively, and 0.27 yr for 2,3,4,7,8-pentaCDF. These values are in stark contrast with the 7 to 15+ yr values reported for these congeners in human adults (Michalek et al., 1996). These much shorter half-life values, likely attributable to rapid growth of the adipose tissue volume and enhanced fecal excretion of dioxins for breast-fed infants, explain why the much higher daily dioxin intake during breastfeeding does not translate to proportionately higher tissue concentrations. Thus, the shorter half-life of dioxins during breastfeeding needs to be considered when evaluating the dioxin hazard to children.

Value of life and behavior toward health risks: an interpretation of social capital.

An individual assessing a risky job can be understood as a public good. He and each of his valued relationships place a demand for the preservation of his life and health for which he accepts a responsibility to preserve. Additional demands generally do not deplete his capacity for beneficial relationships, hence, they are nonrival. It follows that the more extensive are his relationships the greater is his social capital. Although a common metric to compare and aggregate such relationships is not practical, the paper demonstrates that the common social capital indicators can yield qualitative predictions on changes in risky behaviors in the context of conventional value of life models familiar within health economics. The individual will change his behavior toward risk upon experiencing an exogenous change in his social capital: when he marries, has children, acquires friends, or experiences a more socially active community. The empirical sections of the paper show this prediction to conform well to prior studies of micro data as well as to original empirical analysis of aggregate data.
