Optical parameters and upconversion fluorescence in Tm3+/Yb3+-doped alkali-barium-bismuth-tellurite glasses.

Tm(3+)/Yb(3+)-doped alkali-barium-bismuth-tellurite (LKBBT) glasses have been fabricated and characterized. Density, refractive index, optical absorption, absorption and emission cross-sections of Yb(3+), Judd-Ofelt parameters and spontaneous transition probabilities of Tm(3+) have been measured and calculated, respectively. Intense blue three-photon upconversion fluorescence and near-infrared two-photon upconversion fluorescence were investigated under the excitation of a 980 nm diode laser at room temperature. Wide infrared transmission window, high refractive index and strong blue three-photon upconversion emission of Tm(3+) indicate that Tm(3+)/Yb(3+) co-doped LKBBT glasses are promising upconversion optical and laser materials.

Red to blue tunable upconversion in Tm3+-doped ZrO2 nanocrystals.

The effect of dopant concentration on the blue upconversion (UPC) emission of Tm(3+) -doped ZrO(2) nanocrystals under different excitation wavelengths in the red region is reported. The UPC emissions are due to the f-f electronic transitions from excited states (1)G(4) and (1)D(2) of Tm(3+). We observed a chromatic change in the UPC with tuning the excitation wavelength. The UPC emission bands at 475, 488, and 501 nm are observed under excitation at 649 nm, but bands centered at 454 and 460 nm are observed when the excitation wavelength is tuned to 655 nm. The UPC emission could be tuned from 501 to 454 nm ( approximately 47 nm) by changing the excitation wavelength from 649 to 655 nm ( approximately 6 nm). The pump power dependence of the emission bands at 475, 488, and 501 nm were investigated on excitation intensity at 649 nm, and the emission bands at 454 and 460 nm are investigated on excitation intensity at 655 nm, which confirms that all of these UPC emission lines are a two-photon absorption process.

The electronic and vibrational structure of endohedral Tm3N@C80 (I) fullerene--proof of an encaged Tm3+.

The electronic and vibrational structure of the nitride clusterfullerene Tm3N@C80 (I) was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, FTIR, Raman, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The electrochemical energy gap of Tm3N@C80 (I) is 1.99 V, which is 0.13 V larger than that of Sc3N@C80 (I). FTIR spectroscopy showed that the C80:7 (I(h)) cages in Tm3N@C80 (I), Er3N@C80 (I), Ho3N@C80 (I), Tb3N@C80 (I), Gd3N@C80 (I), and Y3N@C80 (I) have the same bond order. The analysis of low-energy Raman spectra points to two uniform force constants which can be used to describe the interaction between the encaged nitride cluster and the C80:7 (I(h)) cage in M3N@C80 (I) (M = Tm, Er, Ho, Tb, Gd, and Y). Because the M3N-C80 bond strength is strongly dependent on the charge of the metal ions, this is a direct hint for a 3+ formal valence state of the metal ions in these nitride clusterfullerene series, including Tm3N@C80 (I). Photoemission spectra of the Tm 4d core level and the Tm 4f valence electrons provided a direct proof for a (4f)12 electronic configuration of the encapsulated thulium. In conclusion, thulium in Tm3N@C80 (I) has a formal electronic ground state of +3, in contrast to the +2 state found in Tm@C82. It is demonstrated that the valence state of metal atoms encaged in fullerenes can be controlled by the chemical composition of the endohedral fullerene.

Pivotal role of the glycine-rich TM3 helix in gating the MscS mechanosensitive channel.

The crystal structure of an open form of the Escherichia coli MscS mechanosensitive channel was recently solved. However, the conformation of the closed state and the gating transition remain uncharacterized. The pore-lining transmembrane helix contains a conserved glycine- and alanine-rich motif that forms a helix-helix interface. We show that introducing 'knobs' on the smooth glycine face by replacing glycine with alanine, and substituting conserved alanines with larger residues, increases the pressure required for gating. Creation of a glycine-glycine interface lowers activation pressure. The importance of residues Gly104, Ala106 and Gly108, which flank the hydrophobic seal, is demonstrated. A new structural model is proposed for the closed-to-open transition that involves rotation and tilt of the pore-lining helices. Introduction of glycine at Ala106 validated this model by acting as a powerful suppressor of defects seen with mutations at Gly104 and Gly108.

The actions of ether, alcohol and alkane general anaesthetics on GABAA and glycine receptors and the effects of TM2 and TM3 mutations.

The actions of 13 general anaesthetics (diethyl ether, enflurane, isoflurane, methoxyflurane, sevoflurane, chloral hydrate, trifluoroethanol, tribromoethanol, tert-butanol, chloretone, brometone, trichloroethylene, and alpha-chloralose) were studied on agonist-activated Cl(-) currents at human GABA(A) alpha(2)beta(1), glycine alpha(1), and GABA(C) rho(1) receptors expressed in human embryonic kidney 293 cells. All 13 anaesthetics enhanced responses to submaximal (EC(20)) concentrations of agonist at GABA(A) and glycine receptors, except alpha-chloralose, which did not enhance responses at the glycine alpha(1) receptor. None of the anaesthetics studied potentiated GABA responses at the GABA(C) rho(1) receptor. Potentiation of submaximal agonist currents by the anaesthetics was studied at GABA(A) and glycine receptors harbouring mutations in putative transmembrane domains 2 and 3 within GABA(A) alpha(2), beta(1), or glycine alpha(1) receptor subunits: GABA(A) alpha(2)(S270I)beta(1), alpha(2)(A291W)beta(1), alpha(2)beta(1)(S265I), and alpha(2)beta(1)(M286W); glycine alpha(1)(S267I) and alpha(1)(A288W). For all anaesthetics studied except alpha-chloralose, at least one of the mutations above abolished drug potentiation of agonist responses at GABA(A) and glycine receptors. alpha-Chloralose produced efficacious direct activation of the GABA(A) alpha(2)beta(1) receptor (a 'GABA-mimetic' effect). The other 12 anaesthetics produced minimal or no direct activation of GABA(A) and glycine receptors. A non-anaesthetic isomer of alpha-chloralose, beta-chloralose, was inactive at GABA(A) and glycine receptors and did not antagonize the actions of alpha-chloralose at GABA(A) receptors. The implications of these findings for the molecular mechanisms of action of general anaesthetics at GABA(A) and glycine receptors are discussed.

Reappearance of fine structure as a probe of lifetime broadening mechanisms in the 4f(N) --> 4f(N-1)5d excitation spectra of Tb3+, Er3+, and Tm3+ in CaF2 and LiYF4.

High-energy transitions in the 4f(N) -->4f(N-1)5d excitation spectra of lanthanide ions in host crystals are usually broadened due to the short excited-state lifetimes, whereas low-energy transitions, with longer excited-state lifetimes, may show fine structure. We report the surprising observation that for some materials fine structure is observed not only for the low-energy excitation bands but also for some high-energy transitions. The excited states that display fine structure are those for which the 5d electron is in the lowest crystal-field level but the 4f(N-1) core is in a highly excited state, indicating that the broadening depends only on the energy of the 5d electron and not on the total energy of the 4f(N-1)5d excited state.

[A study on the concentration quenching of Tm3+ upconversion luminescence].

In this work, we have a designation and preparation of MFT glasses for upconversion, the glasses consisted of TeO2 and fluoride: PbF2, AlF3, BaF2, NaF and the impurity Tm2O3. In this glass system the oxide improve forming ability, the fluorides improve the microscopic environment around RE ions in glasses. In this glass host the content of Tm2O3 achieves to 4% mol and crystallization no occurred. A detail study on the concentration quenching of upconversion luminescence for 1G4-->3H6 and 1D2-->3H4 transitions was completed. The experimental results directed that the quenching concentration was 0.6 mol.% and higher 3 times than in other glasses materials. The cross relaxation and mechanism of concentration quenching were discussed.

[Study on red up-conversion luminescence of fluoride glasses doped with Er3+, Yb3+ and Tm3+].

When the quality of Er2O3 is 10 times the former, the authors found that its character of up-conversion luminescence is distinct. Then the authors studied the luminescence system of Es3+ /Tm3+, Er3+ /Er3+ and Er3+ /Yb3+ /Tm3+ and their character of upconversion and fluorescence spectrum at 980 nm. In addition, the authors studied the relation between the three systems and the consistency of Er2O3. The authors found that the intensity of green and red light changed with the consistence of Er3+ in the experiment. It's the consistence of Er3+ that is the most causative. The chance is equal for each lanthanonion that makes up the luminescence system in the uniformity matter. With the distance between each pair of lanthanonions in the luminescence system is changed, the luminescence system and the color of the up-conversion luminescence also changed.
