The prophylactic orientation is a basic principle, the application of which, in the stomatological practice, on a constant basis, aims at a significant improvement in the status of bucco-dental health of the population, and the transformation of the present type of stomatology, in a truly modern stomatological medicine. The author makes a detailed analysis of the strategy employed in the reduction of the provence of the main bucco dental diseases, and of the necessities for stomatological treatment, especially of the reduction by over 50% of the prevalence of dental caries, which, at the present time, makes necessary to carry out approximately 75% of the entire volume of stomatologic activities in adults. Also the reduction is attempted, of the prevalence of gingivitis, parodontitis, dento-maxillary anomalies, of the cancer of the buccal cavity, and other affections, by methods and means of primary prophylaxis, applied in the majority of the population. The secondary prophylaxis is also analysed, as it is carried out by early detection and treatment of lesions and diseases in the dento-maxillo-facial field. Other aspects are also discussed, such as: extension of the prophylactic orientation in the curative stomatological practice, and the avoidance of iatrogenic lesions and diseases, which are frequent in the stomatological practice; the ergonomic organization of the working place, and of the work methods, reduction of the risks involved in contracting or transmitting to or from the patients of various diseases, prophylaxis of occupational diseases in stomatologists, prophylaxis of aspects, attitudes or behaviour which are against etichal and deontological principles of the profession, as well as the necessity for a better preparation from the prophylactic viewpoint of stomatologists and their coworkers in view of coping with increased competence and efficiency with the increased demands of stomatological assistance of the population.
The great number of stomatological procedures applied to the general population will induce, by their nature, anxiety. This will precede and will accompany the stomatological experience, will induce a defense attitude and will render more difficult the therapeutical relationship between the stomatologist and the patient. Anxiety is also induced by the environment to healthy subjects as well, who have not had a stomatological experience and will induce similar reactions in cases where stomatological procedures are necessary. The study on the anxiety induced by stomatological procedures was carried out in 154 subjects, both sexes being represented, of median age, of which 37 were without stomatological lesions. It is proposed that before the start of a stomatological treatment efforts should be made in view to attenuate anxiety with the aid of simple psychological and psychiatric procedures.
This article deals with the history of the Polish stomatological press in Lwow. It was initiated by a distinguished Polish stomatologist - Professor Antoni Cieszynski. In 1923 he founded a periodical "Dentystyka Polska" (Polish Dentistry) to publish original articles written by Polish and foreign authors, as well as review the stomatological literature and news. In 1930 the title was changed to "Polska Stomatologia" (Polish Stomatology). The articles printed there were very sophisticated; they were not limited only to the pathological dental changes and their treament, but also showed a holistic approach to the human being and demonstrated the relation between oral cavity diseases and changes of the entire body. Sometimes this publication used to be supplemented by a special edition, among others, "Slowianska Stomatologia" (Slavonic Stomatology) or jubilees' editions. The article presents the review of the issues examined in the Lwow stomatological press and describes the conditions in which these publications were created.

Based on regular information from a computer an annual evaluation of prescribed drugs in a stomatological ward was done. The most frequently prescribed drugs were antibiotics in 38.85%, stomatological drugs in 19.52% and vitamins in 12.39%. Further extended use of computer in a stomatological practice and a possibility of mutual connection of several stomatological workplaces, in the systems of data, their collection and transfer to the central computer of the ward, would significantly contribute to a more precise evaluation of pharmacotherapy even in connection with other indices of stomatological records.
OBJECTIVE: The literature published in West China Journal of Stomatology (WCJS) cited by science periodical from 1983 to 2001 were analyzed to evaluate the academic level and quality of WCJS. METHODS: The cited literature was searched by Chinese biological medical disc (CBMDisc) from 1983 to 2001. The distributions of the times, the periodical and the authors were described. RESULTS: The quantities of cited literature were 1 338 and increased with years. The periodical and the authors were 266 and 1 003 respectively from 1998 to 2001. The cited frequencies of stomatological periodicals were more than that of other academic periodical. The authors scattered in 32 provinces and 448 units of China. The medical university and affiliated hospital were 32.14%, the local hospital and stomatological dispensary were 54.69%, the military hospital was 10.71%, and other unit was 2.46%. CONCLUSION: The literature published in WCJS are superior in quality. The cited frequency of WCJS is high relatively. WCJS is one of the most important informational source of stomatology.
During 2003, a total of 258 new patients with oral soft tissue lesions were admitted at the Stomatology Service of the Department of Oral Surgery and Stomatology at the University of Berne. For the present study, 185 patients with clinically and histopathologically verified diagnoses were included. The following data was collected: prevalence of oral mucosal lesions, distribution of benign, precancerous and malign lesions in different age groups, and the concordance of the referral with the working diagnosis at the Stomatology Service. The most frequent pathological soft tissue findings were fibrous hyperplasias (n = 44) and oral lichen planus (n = 30). Precancerous lesions were present in 41 cases (30 patients with oral lichen planus, eleven oral leukoplakias), and ten patients had oral malignomas. Most lesions were found in patients between the age of 40 and 60 years. The referral diagnosis concurred in 36.6% (n = 67) of the cases with the definite diagnosis before initiation of treatment, the working diagnosis in 70% (n = 128) of the cases. Therefore, it can be concluded that a specialised Stomatology Service serves as a center of competence due to large numbers of patients/cases seen and treated, and the resulting high level of clinical experience of the staff. Moreover, it is important in the primary diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma, in collaboration with the referring dentist in private practice.

With the object of studying the impact of socio-hygienic, medico-biological and other factors on the level of stomatological morbidity in children from antenatal period and up to age 15, the author conducted an in-depth survey of 9,820 families residing in towns of autonomous republics of Middle Povolzhie. A multifactor disperse analysis revealed that the development of stomatological morbidity is greatly influenced by socio-hygienic conditions in the family, health status during pregnancy, maternal and child medico-biological factors and also by factors of stomatological medical care provided to children. The data obtained made it possible to formulate a conception of medicosocial prevention of major stomatological diseases. The data on the effectiveness of medicosocial prevention of caries in children were provided.
Among the few German medicohistorians of the 19th and the early 20th century contributing essentially to the formation of history of stomatology and to its methodologic and cognitive progress. Karl Sudhoff was the most eminent one. He was already very early aware of the full responsibility for stomatology--transferred with the stomatologie examination regulations in 1909--as a task relevant also for his special branch. Therefore, he had already announced stomatologicohistoric lectures at the University of Leipzig in 1913. Sudhoff published his "Geschichte der Zahnheilkunde" ("History of Stomatology") in 1921. Of topical interest is Sudhoff's confession that modern history of stomatology can be dealt with in an experienced and scientific manner only by a medico-historically aducated dentist familiar with the necessary methodologic equipment.
The author presents the results obtained with Faustan (diazepam) in the premedication of ambulatory stomatological interventions at a university clinic of stomatology. Experience was acquired in particular with intravenous premedication in a climical study involving 340 patients. The findings from this study and the experience with hundreds of ambulatory interventions in the past several years characterize Faustan, on condition of individual dosage, as a premedicant that is well suited for stomatological interventions, does not impair vital functions, increases the patients' willingness to co-operate and is of considerable anxiolytic activity. The use of Faustan is recommended for stomatological emergency situations and risk patients.

Starting from the shortcomings of the radioprotective devices at present used in routine stomatological radiodiagnosis, the authors describe the advantages of a radioprotective shield which has been produced in the Greifswald University Stomatological Clinic. On the basis of dosimetric studies, the State Board for Nuclear Safety and Radiological Protection of the GDR (Staatliches Amt fur Atomsicherheit und Strahlenschutz der DDR) could demonstrate the suitability of this shield as a radioprotective device for routine stomatological radiodiagnosis.
Using anonymous inquiry and specifically constructed questionnaire, it was shown, that in stomatological institutions of Ajara and also in the whole west part of the country, there is lack of specialties in the field of stomatology. Working is conducted without license, in offices and also during working process there are many cases of violation of physiological and hygienic as well as of technical rules procedures. All this lead to: 1. violation of the low; 2. violation of patient's rights and 3. increase in the morbidity rate among the dentists. All the mentioned above requires immediate actions from the respective governmental bodies and also creation of stomatological associations.
A private stomatology clinics (institution) can not operate in market system of management with benefit without clear guiding lines and a real business plan. Entrepreneurs meet many different issues during organizing stomatology business, as follows: what categories of population will address to the clinics, what financial resources an entrepreneur we need to realize a project, does the project justify itself economically etc? A business plan is created to answer the questions mentioned above. The article considers essence, goals, formation of information field and general methodology of the development of a business plan for stomatology institutions.
In blood and the mixed saliva of patients with intolerance of stomatologic constructional materials the maintenance of cytokines, factors of humoral answer were investigated. It was established, that in formation of intolerance the increased sensitivity stomatologic constructional materials which is not connected to allergic reaction of immediate type and is, apparently, pseudoallergic or develops on other type. There is an activation of the local immune answer including local synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines, sIgA and hyperactivation of complement system to formation of C3a component. Toxic and allergic action of stomatologic constructional materials grows in patients having antibodies to Candida albicans in the mixed saliva.
