[Management of pre-retirement probands at the onset of retirement age--study exemplified by the Parchim district].

Entering the age of retirement means a threshold situation affecting various relations in the living-conditions, medical provision not excluded. [Determinants of the decision to retire. A contribution to the discussion on the "flexible retirement age limit" (author's transl)].

Our research intended to analyse the effects of the "Flexible Altersgrenze" (introduced in 1973) on the position of older workers. The study was designed as a casestudy in three firms of different branches of industry. We found out that all older workers planned to make use of the "Flexible Altersgrenze" in as far as their income and insurance claims permitted it. Under this scheme the retirement age would still be higher than most of the workers would prefer. The following stipulations infludenced the decision to retire: -- the state of physical health -- the strain of working-conditions in their present job and throughout their working-life -- a pessimistic view of their job prospects at that age -- unfavourable experiences with the effects of technical and organisational change in working-conditions -- the necessity of changing the job in later life because of the incapability to bear its strain.

[Consensual and conflictual early retirement--flexible transition to retirement within the context of different labor force strategies].

20 case studies were carried out in different firms in East and West Germany to analyze the process of decision-making in early retirement. The results show the embeddedness of decision making into the respective labour force strategies of the firms. In companies with "internal labour force strategies" there is a consensus-oriented process of decision-making based on negotiations of the participants. In companies that mainly employ skilled workers, however, the process of decision-making is rather conflict-oriented. So, there is evidence that companies' policies on early retirement are two-edged. The consequences of these findings are discussed.

[From early retirement to retirement--change and stability of the social status of East Germany early retirees].

This article deals with the social effects of early retirement in East Germany. On the basis of a panel survey with two waves (1993 and 1996) it is shown that the social effects of early retirement have to be considered on a differentiated level and with regard to the time when the survey was carried out. After a difficult phase of transition the social situation of the people gradually starts to stabilize. Despite the experience of loss the judgements are ambiguous and often unstable. The results of the second wave mainly show an improvement of the social situation and a change in the set of criteria. Moreover, people recognize deficits in their social relations and tend to activate contacts outside their families.

Factors affecting retirement migration to Idaho: an adaptation of the amenity retirement migration model.

The purpose of this study was to determine factors affecting retirement migration of older persons, using Haas and Serow's (1993) model as the framework. Data were based on 462 persons aged 50 and older who had migrated to Idaho and surrendered their out-of-state drivers' licenses during 1992 and 1993. Most moved from another state in the west and were motivated to move to Idaho by such factors as outdoor recreation and quality and pace of life. They had visited their new community at least five times before moving and developed social ties quickly upon arriving. Businesses and community planners can more effectively anticipate changes necessary to accommodate older migrants to their community.
