The distribution of ringworm lesions in cattle naturally infected by Trichophyton verrucosum.

Eighty-seven Friesian Black Pied, males and females of various ages, were examined in the course of an outbreak of T. verrucosum. The site of ringworm lesions is dependent on the sex and age of animal. Sex is the key-factor for animals older than 12 months. Characteristic locations for lesions are: thorax and limbs for cows and heifers, ocular regions for young calves, dewlap and intermaxillary space for bulls. It seems that the differences observed in the frequency of the localisations of lesions among the various groups of animals are mostly due to behavioural reasons. The dissemination of lesions is probably not centrifugal but at random.

Annular skin eruptions. Not every ring on the skin is ringworm.

Many varied skin conditions show an annular pattern. Local cellular immunity is probably the major reason for this. Familiarity with the appearance of the skin in the disorders that result in ring-shaped eruptions, along with an awareness that the majority of these eruptions do not represent tinea or ringworm, will aid in correct diagnosis and selection of appropriate treatment.
