The search for other planets: clues from the solar system.

Studies of element abundances and values of D/H in the atmospheres of the outer planets and Titan support a two-step model for the formation of these bodies. This model suggests that the dimensions of Uranus provide a good index for the sensitivity required to detect planets around other stars. The high proportion of N2 on the surfaces of Pluto and Triton indicates that this gas was the dominant reservoir of nitrogen in the early solar nebula. It should also be abundant on pristine comets. There is evidence that some of these comets may well have brought a large store of volatiles to the inner planets, while others were falling into the sun. In other systems, icy planetesimals falling into stars should reveal themselves through high values of D/H.

SMILE--shaded molecular imaging on low-cost equipment.

The SMILE program runs under MS-DOS on IBM PC AT-compatible computers equipped with the SM640 or the PG640 Matrox graphic board. The program allows real-time three-dimensional (3D) animation and modeling of several isolated molecules that can be built from scratch, manipulated interactively and compared by superimposition. SMILE enables users to compute atomic partial charges, molecular surface area, molecular volume, electrostatic and nonbonded potential energies. PLUTO, ORTEP, and MMP2 input files are set up automatically. The program also provides simple access to crystal packing by real-time animation of the unit cell contents, interactive inspection of the relevant stereochemical parameters and fragment manipulation within the unit cell. SMILE animates stereo views and produces beautiful shaded 3D images (8 colors, 32 shades each) of molecules in many different styles--stick, ball-and-stick, CPK (space filling), and transparent CPK with backbone.

Organic solids produced from simple C/H/O/N ices by charged particles: applications to the outer solar system.

CH4, CO, and CO2 are all potential one-carbon molecular repositories in primitive icy objects. These molecules are all found in the Comet Halley coma, and are probable but, (except for CH4 detected on Triton and Pluto) undetected subsurface constituents in icy outer solar system objects. We have investigated the effects of charged particle irradiation by cold plasma discharge upon surfaces of H2O:CH4 clathrate having a 200:1 ratio, as well as upon ices composed of H2O plus C2H6 or C2H2 (sometimes plus NH3) which are also plausible constituents. These materials color and darken noticeably after a dose 10(9) - 10(10) erg cm-2, which is deposited rapidly (< or = 10(4) yr.) in solar system environments. The chromophore is a yellowish to tan organic material (a tholin) which we have studied by UV-VIS reflection and transmission, and IR transmission spectroscopy. Its yield, -1 C keV-1, implies substantial production of organic solids by the action of cosmic rays and radionuclides in cometary crusts and interiors, as well as rapid production in satellite surfaces. This material shows alkane bands which Chyba and Sagan have shown to well match the Halley infrared emission spectrum near 3.4 microns, and also bands due to aldehyde, alcohol and perhaps alkene/aromatic functional groups. We compare the IR spectral properties of these tholins with the spectra of others produced by irradiation of gases and ices containing simple hydrocarbons.

Metal-assisted unusual hydroxylation at the carbon atom of the triazine ring in dinuclear ruthenium(II) and osmium(II) complexes bridged by 2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine: synthesis, structural characterization, stereochemistry, and electrochemical studies.

The reaction of cis-[M(bpy)2Cl2] (M = Ru(II), and Os(II) with 2,4,6-tris(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (tptz) in refluxing ethanol-water resulted in the formation of dinuclear complexes of the composition [(M(bpy)2)2(tptz-OH)](PF6)3.nH2O (n = 1 for Ru and n = 0 for Os). In this reaction an unusual metal-induced hydroxylation at the carbon atom of the triazine ring of bridged tptz occurred. However, hydroxylation did not occur in the corresponding mononuclear complexes under similar reaction condition. A comparative study revealed that sufficient electrophilicity on the carbon atom and free movement of the attached pyridyl ring promoted the hydroxylation reaction. The hydroxylated dinuclear complexes exist in two stereoisomeric forms, a rac form (delta delta/lambda lambda) and a meso form (delta lambda/lambda delta). Both diastereoisomers have been isolated in pure form and characterized. The molecular structures of the rac form of Ru(II) complex (3-II) and meso form of the Os(II) complex (4-I) have been established by single-crystal X-ray studies. Crystal data: complex 3-II, monoclinic, C2/c, a = 24.584(7) A, b = 14.309(4) A, c = 41.044(13) A, beta = 92.84(2) degrees, V = 14420.0(7) A3, Z = 8, R = 0.179, wR2 = 0.479; complex 4-I, triclinic, P1, a = 13.444(7) A, b = 14.576(5) A, c = 19.641(7) A, alpha = 98.21(3) degrees, beta = 101.67(4) degrees, gamma = 105.80(4) degrees, V = 3546.0(3) A3, Z = 2, R = 0.093, wR2 = 0.279. The poor data quality of 3-II did not allow anisotropic refinement of non-hydrogen atoms except Ru and P. A PLUTO drawing of this compound is given only to support the molecular structure. 1H NMR data have been used to characterize the diastereoisomers. The dinuclear complexes exhibit unusual electrochemical behavior; cathodic shifts of the metal-centered oxidations and ligand-based first reduction compared to mononuclear complexes have been observed. There is a splitting in the metal-centered oxidation potentials, indicating strong electronic communication between the metal centers. Comproportionation constants (Kcom) of the mixed-valence species have been calculated; the values are in the range 6.03 x 10(4)-4.7 x 10(6). It appears that a metal-metal interaction occurred by an electron-transfer mode across the low-lying pi* orbital of the bridged tptz.

Coloration and darkening of methane clathrate and other ices by charged particle irradiation: applications to the outer solar system.

Methane clathrate is expected to be an important carbon-containing ice in the outer solar system. We investigate the effect of electron irradiation by coronal discharge on several simple hydrocarbons enclathrated in or mixed with H2O or H2O+NH3 in simulation of the effects of the solar wind, planetary magnetospheric particles, and cosmic rays on surfaces containing these ices in the outer solar system and interstellar space. H2O+CH4 clathrate, H2O+C2H6, H2O+CH4+NH3, H2O+C2H6+NH3, and H2O+C2H2 are all initially white ices, and all produce yellowish to brownish organic products upon charged particles irradiation. Significant coloration occurs with doses of 10(9) erg cm-2, corresponding to short interplanetary irradiation times. Uranian magnetospheric electrons penetrate to approximately 1 mm depth and deposit this dose in 8, 30, 65, 200, and 500 years into the surfaces of Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon, respectively. Further irradiation of the laboratory ice surface results in a progressive darkening and a more subdued color. For a conversion efficiency to solids G approximately equal to 1 molecule keV-1, the upper limit for the time for total destruction of CH4 and other simple hydrocarbons in the upper 1 mm is 5 x 10(4) years (Miranda) to 3 x 10(6) years (Oberon). Remote detection of CH4 is possible only when its replenishment rate exceeds the destruction rate at the depth probed by spectroscopy. Reflection spectroscopy or irradiated H2O+CH4 frost is compared with the spectra of several outer solar system objects and to other relevant organic and inorganic materials. Ultraviolet-visible and infrared transmission spectroscopy of the postirradiation residues is presented. Persistence of color and of CH4 ice bands on Triton and Pluto suggests ongoing surface activity and/or atmospheric haze. Over 4 x 10(9) year time scales, > or = 10 m of satellite and cometary surface material is processed by cosmic rays to a radiation-hardened ice-tholin mixture devoid of CH4. Preaccretional chemistry, exogenous materials, and endogenous organic chemistry all contribute to the spectral properties of icy satellites which accreted simple CH(O) molecules. Radiation darkening traces the deposition of mobilized or impact-exposed carbon-bearing volatiles on these satellites. More exhaustive experiments are necessary to work out the detailed relationships between initial composition, exposure age, and color/albedo.

The size and albedo of the Kuiper-belt object (20000) Varuna.

Observations over the last decade have revealed the existence of a large number of bodies orbiting the Sun beyond Neptune. Known as the Kuiper-belt objects (KBOs), they are believed to be formed in the outer reaches of the protoplanetary disk around the young Sun, and have been little altered since then. They are probably the source of short-period comets. The KBOs are, however, difficult objects to study because of their distance from earth, so even basic physical properties such as their sizes and albedos remain unknown. Previous size estimates came from assuming an albedo with the canonical value being 0.04. Here we report simultaneous measurements of the thermal emission and reflected optical light of the bright KBO (20000) Varuna, which allow us to determine independently both the size and the albedo. Varuna has an equivalent circular diameter of D = 900+129-145 km and a red geometric albedo of pR = 0.070+0.030-0.017. Its surface is darker than Pluto's, suggesting that it is largely devoid of fresh ice, but brighter than previously assumed for KBOs.

The binary Kuiper-belt object 1998 WW31.

The recent discovery of a binary asteroid during a spacecraft fly-by generated keen interest, because the orbital parameters of binaries can provide measures of the masses, and mutual eclipses could allow us to determine individual sizes and bulk densities. Several binary near-Earth, main-belt and Trojan asteroids have subsequently been discovered. The Kuiper belt-the region of space extending from Neptune (at 30 astronomical units) to well over 100 AU and believed to be the source of new short-period comets-has become a fascinating new window onto the formation of our Solar System since the first member object, not counting Pluto, was discovered in 1992 (ref. 13). Here we report that the Kuiper-belt object 1998 WW31 is binary with a highly eccentric orbit (eccentricity e approximately 0.8) and a long period (about 570 days), very different from the Pluto/Charon system, which was hitherto the only previously known binary in the Kuiper belt. Assuming a density in the range of 1 to 2 g cm-3, the albedo of the binary components is between 0.05 and 0.08, close to the value of 0.04 generally assumed for Kuiper-belt objects.

Formation of Kuiper-belt binaries by dynamical friction and three-body encounters.

The Kuiper belt is a disk of icy bodies that orbit the Sun beyond Neptune; the largest known members are Pluto and its companion Charon. A few per cent of Kuiper-belt bodies have recently been found to be binaries with wide separations and mass ratios of the order of unity. Collisions were too infrequent to account for the observed number of binaries, implying that these binaries formed through collisionless interactions mediated by gravity. These interactions are likely to have been most effective during the period of runaway accretion, early in the Solar System's history. Here we show that a transient binary forms when two large bodies penetrate one another's Hill sphere (the region where their mutual forces are larger than the tidal force of the Sun). The loss of energy needed to stabilize the binary orbit can then occur either through dynamical friction from surrounding small bodies, or through the gravitational scattering of a third large body. Our estimates slightly favour the former mechanism. We predict that five per cent of Kuiper-belt objects are binaries with apparent separations greater than 0.2 arcsec, and that most are in tighter binaries or systems of higher multiplicity.

Discovery of five irregular moons of Neptune.

Each giant planet of the Solar System has two main types of moons. 'Regular' moons are typically larger satellites with prograde, nearly circular orbits in the equatorial plane of their host planets at distances of several to tens of planetary radii. The 'irregular' satellites (which are typically smaller) have larger orbits with significant eccentricities and inclinations. Despite these common features, Neptune's irregular satellite system, hitherto thought to consist of Triton and Nereid, has appeared unusual. Triton is as large as Pluto and is postulated to have been captured from heliocentric orbit; it traces a circular but retrograde orbit at 14 planetary radii from Neptune. Nereid, which exhibits one of the largest satellite eccentricities, is believed to have been scattered from a regular satellite orbit to its present orbit during Triton's capture. Here we report the discovery of five irregular moons of Neptune, two with prograde and three with retrograde orbits. These exceedingly faint (apparent red magnitude m(R) = 24.2-25.4) moons, with diameters of 30 to 50 km, were presumably captured by Neptune.

Saturn's moon Phoebe as a captured body from the outer Solar System.

The orbital properties of Phoebe, one of Saturn's irregular moons, suggest that it was captured by the ringed planet's gravitational field rather than formed in situ. Phoebe's generally dark surface shows evidence of water ice, but otherwise the surface most closely resembles that of C-type asteroids and small outer Solar System bodies such as Chiron and Pholus that are thought to have originated in the Kuiper belt. A close fly-by of Phoebe by the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft on 11 June 2004 (19 days before the spacecraft entered orbit around Saturn) provided an opportunity to test the hypothesis that this moon did not form in situ during Saturn's formation, but is instead a product of the larger protoplanetary disk or 'solar nebula'. Here we derive the rock-to-ice ratio of Phoebe using its density combined with newly measured oxygen and carbon abundances in the solar photosphere. Phoebe's composition is close to that derived for other solar nebula bodies such as Triton and Pluto, but is very different from that of the regular satellites of Saturn, supporting Phoebe's origin as a captured body from the outer Solar System.

Occultation of X-rays from Scorpius X-1 by small trans-neptunian objects.

Since the discovery of the trans-neptunian objects (TNOs) in 1992, nearly one thousand new members have been added to our Solar System, several of which are as big as--or even larger than--Pluto. The properties of the population of TNOs, such as the size distribution and the total number, are valuable information for understanding the formation of the Solar System, but direct observation is only possible for larger objects with diameters above several tens of kilometres. Smaller objects, which are expected to be more abundant, might be found when they occult background stars, but hitherto there have been no definite detections. Here we report the discovery of such occultation events at millisecond timescales in the X-ray light curve of Scorpius X-1. The estimated sizes of these occulting TNOs are < or =100 m. Their abundance is in line with an extrapolation of the distribution of sizes of larger TNOs.

Platelet activation in patients with congestive heart failure: do we have enough evidence to consider clopidogrel?

Our understanding of the pathogenesis of congestive heart failure (CHF) has improved remarkably in recent years. However, despite better knowledge and novel pharmaceutical strategies, this disease is still one of the most brutal killers in the Western world. The pathophysiology of CHF is complex, and much of our comprehension revolves strictly around the neurohormonal and mechanical mechanisms involved. It has been suggested that CHF is associated with altered hemostasis, but whether a prothrombotic state contributes to the pathogenesis and progression of the disease is still not well known. The purpose of this review article is to discuss our current knowledge of platelet activation in patients with CHF and the potential role of antiplatelet agents in preventing these hemostatic abnormalities. Clopidogrel is an established medication that reduces the incidence of stroke, myocardial ischemia, or vascular death. It is currently the drug of choice in the prophylaxis of subacute stent thrombosis and postischemic stroke treatment. Promising results of the most resent trials (Clopidogrel versus Aspirin in Patients at Risk of Ischemic Events [CAPRIE] and Clopidogrel in Unstable angina to prevent Recurrent Events [CURE]) may expand future indications of this ADP receptor antagonist for prevention of thrombotic complications in the CHF population. Currently conducted clinical trials (Warfarin and Antiplatelet Therapy in Chronic Heart Failure [WATCH] and Plavix Use for Treatment of Congestive Heart Failure [PLUTO-CHF] should clarify the role of clopidogrel in these patients.

Whisking as a "voluntary" response: operant control of whisking parameters and effects of whisker denervation.

The rat's ability to vary its whisking "strategies" to meet the functional demands of a discriminative task suggests that whisking may be characterized as a "voluntary" behavior--an operant--and like other operants, should be modifiable by appropriate manipulations of response-reinforcer contingencies. To test this hypothesis we have used high-resolution, optoelectronic "real-time" recording procedures to monitor the movements of individual whiskers and reinforce specific movement parameters (amplitude, frequency). In one operant paradigm (N = 9) whisks with protractions above a specified amplitude were reinforced (Variable Interval 30 s) in the presence of a tone, but extinguished (EXT) in its absence. In a second paradigm (N = 3), rats were reinforced on two different VI schedules (VI-20s/VI-120s) signaled, respectively, by the presence or absence of the tone. Selective reinforcement of whisking movements maintained the behavior over many weeks of testing and brought it under stimulus and schedule control. Subjects in the first paradigm learned to increase responding in the presence of the tone and inhibit responding in its absence. In the second paradigm, subjects whisked at significantly different rates in the two stimulus conditions. Bilateral deafferentation of the whisker pad did not impair conditioned whisking or disrupt discrimination behavior. Our results confirm the hypothesis that rodent whisking has many of the properties of an operant response. The ability to bring whisking movement parameters under operant control should facilitate electrophysiological and lesion/behavioral studies of this widely used "model" sensorimotor system.

Visualization and characterization of non-covalent networks in molecular crystals: automated assignment of graph-set descriptors for asymmetric molecules.

A method of visualizing intermolecular networks (for example, hydrogen-bonded networks) in the crystalline state has been developed, based on the concept of link atoms, i.e. those atoms deemed to be in contact with each unique molecule or ion in the crystal chemical unit (CCU). Extension of a structure using each of these primary links can be achieved, enabling the generation and investigation of extended networks. Algorithms have been developed for the automatic assignment of graph-set notation for patterns up to second level, i.e. those involving one or two crystallographically independent non-covalent bonds, in the absence of internal crystallographic symmetry in the unique molecules of the CCU. The self, ring, chain and discrete motifs may be displayed by highlighting the atoms and bonds comprising the pattern. These methodologies have been implemented in the Cambridge Structural Database program PLUTO.

Surface composition of Kuiper belt object 1993SC.

The 1.42- to 2.40-micrometer spectrum of Kuiper belt object 1993SC was measured at the Keck Observatory in October 1996. It shows a strongly red continuum reflectance and several prominent infrared absorption features. The strongest absorptions in 1993SC's spectrum occur near 1.62, 1.79, 1.95, 2.20, and 2.32 micrometers in wavelength. Features near the same wavelengths in the spectra of Pluto and Neptune's satellite Triton are due to CH4 on their surfaces, suggesting the presence of a simple hydrocarbon ice such as CH4, C2H6, C2H4, or C2H2 on 1993SC. In addition, the red continuum reflectance of 1993SC suggests the presence of more complex hydrocarbons.

Aristophanes' Wealth: ancient alternative medicine and its modern survival.

The miraculous cure of the blind god Plutos ("Wealth') in Aristophanes' play illuminates some of the reasons why people have sought help in alternative medicine over the ages. Apart from limitations of conventional medicine these factors can be social, political, religious, psychological, and scientific. Alternative medicine may function in a complementary way to the conventional. Nevertheless, an overestimation of its therapeutic potentials by the public can lead to the domination of irrationalism, all in the name of liberation from the shackles of a mechanistic rationalism.

Morphogenetic responses of six Philodendron cultivars in vitro.

In vitro morphogenic response of nodal explants from six cultivars of Philodendron viz, blue mistic, painted lady, pink prince, pluto, royal queen and green emperor was studied. Frequency and number of shoot formation depend on the cultivars and concentration of BAP. High frequency and number of shoot formation were obtained w hen the nodal explants were cultured in Nitsch medium supplemented with BAP (6.8-11.8 microM), sucrose (2%) and agar (0.45%), initially in the dark for 8-10 weeks followed by 16 hr photoperiod. Regenerated shoots were rooted on medium without growth regulators. After two weeks of hardening, rooted and rootless shoots were established in the soil with more than 90 and 65% survival rates respectively, while the unhardened plantlets showed a much lower percentage (20%) establishment. A standard protocol for the rapid multiplication of Philodendron is presented.

Comparison of reorganization of the somatosensory system in rats that sustained forelimb removal as neonates and as adults.

Studies of sensory pathways in several species indicate that the extent and form of reorganization resulting from deafferentation early in life vs. adulthood are not the same. The reasons for such differences are not well understood. To gain further insight into age-dependent mechanisms of reorganization, this study compared the consequences of neonatal vs. adult forelimb amputation in rats at multiple levels of the sensory pathway, including primary somatosensory cortex, brainstem, and dorsal root ganglia. At the cortical level, the average area of the functional forelimb-stump representation from rats amputated as adults was significantly smaller (P < 0.05) than that of neonatally amputated rats (4.3 +/- 1.3 mm(2) vs. 6.6 +/- 1.5 mm(2), respectively). At the brainstem level, neonatally amputated rat cuneate neurons possessed the following responsivities: 20% stump responsive, 40% responsive to both stump and hindlimb, 30% responsive to another body region, and 10% unresponsive. In contrast, cuneate neurons of adult amputated rats were 70% stump responsive, 2% responsive to both stump and hindlimb, and 30% unresponsive. A significantly (P < 0.001) greater percentage of the C(6)-C(8) dorsal root ganglia neurons of adult amputated rats were unresponsive to peripheral stimulation vs. neurons from neonatally amputated rats (48% vs. 16%, respectively). These results indicate that the reorganization that occurs in response to forelimb amputation at birth vs. adulthood is distinctly different at each of these levels of the dorsal column-medial lemniscal pathway. Possible mechanisms to account for these differences are considered.
