[Indicators of general and local immunity in chronic and neoplastic processes in the head and neck areas].

Total and secretory immunity was investigated in healthy people, patients with chronic ENT pathologies, and patients with tumors of the oral cavity, larynx and laryngopharynx. It was found that chronic inflammation was followed by a decline of topical defence and a decrease of total immunity. In cancer patients these changes were aggravated. Topical immunity disorders included mainly secretory immunoglobulin A and were most pronounced in patients with tumors localized in the oral cavity.

[Influence of methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin on the neoplastic process in rats].

The effect of methylcobalamine (5.6-dimethylbenzimidazolyl-Co-methylcobamide, CH3-B12) and cyanocobalamine (5,6-dimethylbenzimidazolyly-Co-cyanocobamide, CN-B12) on the growth of Walker's carcinosarcoma and longevity of white noninbred rats with implanted Zajdela ascites hepatoma was studied. The two agents exerted a similar effect. They 1) reduced the survival of rats with implanted Zajdela ascites hepatoma and Walker's carcinosarcoma; 2) did not increase the cell concentration in ascites; and 3) increased the total volume of ascites.

Comparative analysis of certain metals and tumor markers in bronchopulmonary cancer and colorectal cancers. Metals and tumor markers in the neoplastic process.

Carcinogenic metal levels in serum and tissue samples were measured in patients with bronchopulmonary or colorectal cancer. The cadmium and nickel tissue levels in the patients with lung cancer were significantly higher than in the controls. A statistical correlation was found between chromium and cadmium, as well as between cadmium and nickel in patients with colorectal cancer. In addition, prior to the operation, the tumor markers alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen (Ca 19-9), polypeptide histidio antigen (TPA) and ferritin were analyzed. Their average concentrations were correlated with the existing concentrations of the metals. This was done for both types of cancer. Tumor marker detection showed an increase of CEA and TPA in patients with colorectal cancer. A statistical correlation was observed between AFP and zinc tumor tissue.

[Functional morphology of breast APUD cells in dysplasia and neoplastic processes].

Histochemical and immunohistochemical methods were used to examine 29 malignant tumors (18 lobular and 11 invasive carcinomas) and 34 fibroadenomas of the mammary gland (MG). APUD cells containing serotonin, melatonin, and beta-endorphine were shown to be present in the duct epithelium of the normal MG and its pericanalicular fibroadenoma. APUD cells were detected in 21 of the 29 malignant tumours of MG. Hormonal differences of APUD cells were found in poorly and well differentiated carcinomas: the former contained serotonin, melatonin, and beta-endorphine (inhibitors of proliferation), the latter--insulin and adrenocorticotropic hormone (stimulators of cell division). Such differences in the endocrine function of MG malignant tumors are likely to be significant in the clinical course and determination of prognosis for carcinomas of various differentiation.

Liver cell adenoma: diagnosis and treatment of a rare hepatic neoplastic process.

Liver adenomatosis is a rare entity in which multiple liver cell adenomas (more than 10) occur in patients with no prior history of steroid use or glycogen storage disease. This report describes a case of liver adenomatosis, distinguishes liver adenomatosis from other benign liver lesions, and discusses the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections involved in the neoplastic process of the uterine cervix as established by prospective follow-up of 513 women for two years.

A total of 513 women with cervical HPV infections have been followed-up since 1981 (mean 25.6 months) to establish the biological potential of HPV in cervical carcinogenesis. On each attendance, the patients were subjected to colposcopy accompanied by Papanicolaou (PAP) smears and/or punch biopsies. The latter were analysed for HPV particles on TEM, for the cytopathic changes of HPV, as well as for HPV structural proteins. The local immunocompetent cell (ICC) infiltrates are enumerated using ANAE-technique to define B-, MPS- and T cells, and monoclonal antibodies for T cell subsets, NK and K cells and Langerhans cells. HPV DNA typing was accomplished by Southern blot and spot hybridization using the DNA probes for HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18. Antibody titres for HSV were measured, and Chlamydia trachomatis isolations completed in cervical swabs. No correlation with the clinical course, e.g. regression (RE), persistence (PE), progression (PR) or recurrence (RC) of the HPV lesions could be established for the following factors; expression of HPV antigens, presence of HPV particles on TEM, Chlamydia in cervical swabs, the levels of HSV antibodies, and the levels of the ICCs. The OKT4+/OKT8+ cell ratio, however, was inversely correlated with PR, being most markedly reduced in recurrent lesions. Of the 513 lesions, 24.8% regressed, 59.8% remained persistent, and 14.1% progressed, 11.9% having been coned due to progression into CIS. So far, 1.1% of lesions have recurred after such a treatment. The progression rate was highest (45.5%) in HPV 16 lesions, followed by that (27.3%) in HPV 18 lesions, as contrasted to 0% and 13.3% for HPV 6 and 11, respectively. The results clearly confirm that cervical HPV infections are capable of progressing into CIS and thus show a natural history equivalent to that of classical CIN. The inherent potential of HPV 16 and HPV 18 lesions for clinical progression was clearly established, supporting the concept on HPV 16 and HPV 18 as the high risk HPV types in cervical carcinogenesis.

[Contrast and quantitative characteristics of biological tissues in experimental neoplastic processes based on biexponential relaxation analysis of NMR tomograms].

A method of contrast enhancement and quantification of experimental tumors in vivo by estimation of tissue proton transverse magnetic relaxation nonexponentiality is proposed. Relaxation time and percentage of a rapidly descending magnetization component due to intracellular water protons are followed for tumor and uninvolved tissues in a course of subcutaneously transplanted solid mouse melanoma B16 development. The exponential approximation of a relaxation curve within the 6-90 ms time range is shown to fit melanoma B16 tissue characterization. Contrast-enhanced calculated MR-images are presented.
