A motion picture study of macrophage culture infected with the endozoits of Toxoplasma gondii revealed an enhanced locomotor activity in afected cells: regular contractions of the cell resulting in an incomplete extrusion of the parasitophorous vacuole or host-cell destruction, formation of excessive undulating membranes and pinocytotic vesicles.
Increase in motility and degranulation of basophilic granulocytes by stimulation with antigen were studied by phase-contrast microscopic motion pictures. There was no difference in random movement between sensitized (atopic asthmatics) and nonsensitized basophilic granulocytes (healthy subjects). The incidence of basophilic granulocytes with oriented movement before antigen stimulation was significantly lower in atopic asthmatics compared to that in healthy subjects, but was significantly increased at 3-6 min and reached the peak at 12-15 min after addition of antigen. Degranulation of sensitized basophilic granulocytes began to occur at 3-6 min with the maximum at 12-15 min after antigen stimulation.

Tele-echocardiography is not widely used because of lengthy transmission times when using standard Motion Pictures Expert Groups (MPEG)-2 lossy compression algorythms, unless expensive high bandwidth lines are used. We sought to validate the newer MPEG-4 algorythms to allow further reduction in echocardiographic motion video file size. Four cardiologists expert in echocardiography read blindly 165 randomized uncompressed and compressed 2D and color Doppler normal and pathologic motion images. One Digital Video and 3 MPEG-4 compression algorythms were tested, the latter at 3 decreasing compression quality levels (100%, 65% and 40%). Mean diagnostic and image quality scores were computed for each file and compared across the 3 compression levels using uncompressed files as controls. File dimensions decreased from a range of uncompressed 12-83 MB to MPEG-4 0.03-2.3 MB. All algorythms showed mean scores that were not significantly different from uncompressed source, except the MPEG-4 DivX algorythm at the highest selected compression (40%, p=.002). These data support the use of MPEG-4 compression to reduce echocardiographic motion image size for transmission purposes, allowing cost reduction through use of low bandwidth lines.

Time-lapse motion picture studies were carried out on isolated fowl embryo osteoclasts in vitro, the cells have an extremely active ruffled border, and show vigorous pinocytotic activity. Electron microscope studies on osmium-fixed cells showed that the pinocytotic vacuoles contained bone salt crystals (as well as material which could not be identified on morphological grounds), and that the folds of the ruffled border enclosed crystals and collagen fibrils. Changes were seen in the matrix beneath the ruffled border. Initially, the collagen fibres became separated from each other and at the same time bone salt crystals became detached from them. Later, as crystals and ground substance disappeared, the outline and cross-striation of the collagen became distinct. The implications of these findings are discussed with respect to the mechanism of bone erosion.
Succinyldicholine 2 mg/kg body weight returned the eyes of 20 anesthetized subjects to the same basic horizontal position as when conscious. The distance between the two eyes, as measured from motion pictures, agreed when the patient was in the conscious state and succinyldicholine-stimulated unconscious state by 99 +/- 10%. Since succinyldicholine has been shown by others to selectively produce a sustained contraction of en grappe muscle fibers, these muscle fibers are implicated as determinants of the basic ocular position and a cause of strabismus.
This research tested whether silent motion pictures could be a source of contexts that fostered comprehension of relative clause and passive voice sentences during reading. These two syntactic structures are chronically difficult for some deaf readers. According to the instructional strategy, while subjects watched silent comedy stories, the video display intermittently focused attention on short segments of action and then called for a decision regarding which of two sentences printed in a workbook described the action segment. After this, a display on the video screen provided feedback on the accuracy of the decision. If successful here, this approach might be applied to other areas of competence in order to elevate the generally low level of reading performance by many deaf students. The study applied a single subject design in order to measure sentence comprehension accuracy before and following use of the materials. The computerized testing procedure also measured sentence reading time, an index of attention use. Thus, these data allowed an examination of whether any increases in comprehension were associated with slower, more laborious rates of reading. The instructional approach was an indirect one sharing multiple aspects of whole language methodology, and the sample included deaf subjects at a variety of reading ability levels. This permitted examination of whether an indirect instructional approach could be successful with readers demonstrating relatively low reading ability. The central research question of the study was the following 'Can this instructional method be effective with deaf readers?'.
