Masturbation in prepubescent children: a case report and review of the literature.

A 10-year-old girl observed to have episodes of flushing, pallor and weakness, was referred for investigation of possible carcinoid syndrome. The cause of these episodes was masturbation. Masturbation occurs at all ages and in most cases is considered normal behaviour. Lack of recognition of this phenomenon in children may lead to unnecessary investigations and treatment.

Absence status manifested by compulsive masturbation.

Absence status manifested by compulsive masturbation occurred in a 41-year-old man with generalized epilepsy. Ictal simple and complex sexual manifestations during partial seizures in focal epilepsy are rare, but, to our knowledge, our report of this sexual automatism during absence status in generalized epilepsy is unique.

EEG during masturbation and ejaculation.

The occurrence of a distinctive EEG pattern specifically related to sexual arousal and orgasm would provide a reliable and convenient means of identifying such events in the laboratory and would also provide clues to cerebral structures involved in the processes. EEG-polygraph recordings were obtained under rigorously controlled conditions in four normal male subjects during masturbation and ejaculation. The EEG data were subjected to both impressionistic and quantitative analyses. They showed no remarkable changes during the sequence of relevant physiological responses. The sole effect was a slight depression of alpha activity, a well-known nonspecific effect associated with changes in attention and arousal. Examination of the literature shows little agreement among reported results of studies of EEG changes during orgasm. It is likely that at least some reported changes were artifactual. It is concluded that the case for the existence of EEG changes specifically related to sexual arousal and orgasm remains unproven.

Masturbation and sexual fantasies in married couples.

This article reports some aspects of sociosexual behavior, as a small part of an intensive study of 38 married couples. The persons' experiences and formulations are the primary material in an effort to humanize sexological research. This article reflects the Danish psychological-psychiatric tradition with emphasis on personal interviews instead of questionnaires, inventories, or tests. The analyses are based on differences between husband and wife and between men and women as groups. A number of qualitative thematic differences in personal experience with respect to masturbation and sexual fantasies are reported. Attention is drawn to thematic differences in the psychological significance of these aspects of sexuality which are, in part, dependent on the sex of the subject.

Enuresis following masturbation in a mentally retarded adolescent.

An unusual presentation of enuresis is described. A mentally retarded adolescent male with normal bladder function wet his bed while awake following masturbation. Initially, this sequence was not apparent to the parents or physicians. A multidisciplinary approach to the symptom helped to define and focus on the circumstances of the symptom itself, allowing for successful intervention.

Compulsive masturbation in infantile autism treated by mirtazapine.

This case report describes a child with a severe autistic syndrome worsened by hypersexual behavior consisting of compulsive masturbatory activity. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been reported to be beneficial in reducing hypersexual behaviors. A treatment with mirtazapine improved the entire clinical autistic picture with the disappearance of masturbation. This result suggests that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors could be useful and promising tools in the treatment of hypersexual behaviors in children with autistic disorders. Moreover, the general, and in some ways unexpected, improvement of the social interaction, communication, and imagination, the dramatic reduction of aloof mannerisms, stereotypes, aggressiveness, and inappropriate emotional response to frustrations, as well as the first appearance of the pragmatic use of language and a strong impetus to emotional development disclosed a new spectrum of possible applications of these drugs, and mirtazapine in particular, suggesting the need for new and more extensive studies on the pharmacotherapy of autism.

Efficacy of lithium carbonate on public and compulsive masturbation: a female case with mild mental disability.

The efficacy of lithium carbonate in the first reported case of a female with mild mental disability who engaged in public and compulsive masturbation is described. The patient was born in 1975, and was 19 years old at first admission. A diagnosis of schizophrenia was initially suspected, therefore the patient was given medication including pimozide, haloperidol, carbamazepine, diazepam and levomepromazine. These medications, however, did not control the symptoms, and the patient showed several side effects, such as incontinence. Only lithium carbonate was efficacious among the medications administered; the patient's abnormal sexual behavior was significantly reduced and no conspicuous side effects were recognized. The mechanisms of lithium carbonate in controlling abnormal sexual behavior are discussed.

The use of directed masturbation training in the treatment of primary anorgasmia.

This review evaluates the evidence for the effectiveness of the use of directed masturbation training in the treatment of primary anorgasmia. Various methodological problems are discussed but it is clear that some clients can be helped by this form of therapy. As yet it is unclear which clients are likely to benefit from such a programme or what are the most important factors influencing outcome. Some social and cultural implications, including issues relating to the role of the therapist, are briefly discussed.

Treatment of public masturbation by behavioral management.

This case history presents a treatment procedure for a nine-year-old girl who masturbated in the classroom. A fading procedure within a behavioral management contract was implemented which proved to be effective. One-, three-, six-, and nine-month follow-ups did not show any evidence of relapse or symptoms substitution.

Electrocardiographic study of the effect of masturbation normal individuals.

An electrocardiographic study of 120 normal individuals of age group between 22 years to 38 years was carried out to observe changes manifested in the electrocardiogram under the effect of masturbation. Twelve-lead electrocardiograms was recorded, E.C.G. were taken twice in all the subjects: (i) before ejaculation, and (ii) after ejaculation. After ejaculation, in electrocardiogram, following changes were observed: (i) increase of QRS-amplitude, (ii) increase of T-wave amplitude, (iii) decrease of heart rate, and (iv) elevation of St-segment. Blooe pressure was also estimated in all the subjects before and after ejaculation. Blood pressure levels increased after ejaculation in all the cases. The fact that any sort of stressful condition may induce the discharge of epinephrine and norepinephrine from the adrenal medulla as well as adrenergic nerve endings, led us to estimate the concentration of epinephrine and nor-epinephrine in plasma before and after ejaculation. The result showed, increase of concentration of epinephrine and nor-epinephrine after ejaculation. Hence epinephrine and nor-epinephrine, were thought to be responsible to cause changes in the electrocardiographic pattern after ejaculation.

Urethral masturbation and sexual disinhibition in dementia: a case report.

Urethral masturbation and sexual disinhibition as manifestations of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are described in a 90-year-old patient who repeatedly self-inserted foreign bodies into his urethra. A diagnosis was made of late onset sexual disinhibition and hypersexuality in a patient with Dementia of the Alzheimer Type. Significant reduction of his sexual behavior was achieved with low doses of haloperidol. Similar symptoms are noted in Pick's disease, other fronto-temporal lesions, mania and following a seizure or treatment of Parkinson's disease, and have been described as Kluver-Busy-type. Clinicians should consider this diagnosis when investigating dysuria, cystitis, haematuria and urinary tract infections even in the very old.

[Penile injuries caused by masturbation with a vacuum cleaner. Description of a case and review of the literature].

The paper reports a case of penis injury which occurred while masturbating using a vacuum cleaner. This caused skin lesions and urethral lacerations which were successfully cured from both and esthetic and functional point of view. The Authors stress the extreme rarity of the case and comment on the pathological anatomy of lesions and surgical objectives on the basis of a review of the literature.

Masturbation fantasies in a prelatency girl: early female body fantasy conflicts as a major determinant in the experience of primary femininity.

Material from a child-analytic case is presented demonstrating the way in which a girl created erotic fantasies from her understanding of bodily sensations and used those fantasies in masturbation. The material shows how analysis of early fantasies of this nature helps us to understand and follow a line of development of primary femininity in which core conflicts involving urethral sphincter, periurethral, and bladder sensations combine with genital area sensations in the creation of anxiety over fears of genital injury. The clinical implication of anxiety as the dominant affect early in female development in this case is discussed.
