[Clothing and protective gear for nursing occupations from the hygienic viewpoint: consensus of the DGKH section "Hygiene in Inpatient and Outpatient Care and Rehabilitation", May 2nd 2005].

Both in inpatient and outpatient care institutions often questions arise what kind of working clothes and additional protective equipment nurses have to wear in specific situations. To overcome these uncertainties, the section "Hygiene in inpatient and outpatient care and rehabilitation" of the German society for hospital hygiene (DGKH) has developed an overview, that shows which elements of working clothes and protective devices, especially gloves, should be used in the different fields of nursing practice. The comprehensive and well structured information should be considered as minimum standard for hygienic purposes.

[Oral hygiene analysis, prosthesis hygiene and prosthesis stomatitis of old aged people--conclusions for gerostomatological care].

The oral health behaviour of old aged people, especially by pensioners in old people's homes or nursing homes is unsatisfactory, and is influenced from different social factors and social conditions. People with insufficient oral and prosthesis hygiene fall more frequent ill with prosthesis stomatitis compared to prosthesis wearers with clean artificial dentures. In addition the dental prosthesis care is not a part of daily personal hygiene in these investigated old people's homes. Patients and nurses are inadequate enlightened of oral hygiene measures.

[The use of the universal theory of hygienic standards in military hygiene].

On the basis of an abound practice of hygiene standardization, the authors have elaborated a system of fundamental tenets and premises that correspond to the requirements of a universal theory. It includes norms and standards for a living organisms and the environment. The hygiene standardization foundation is based on the principles of guarantee, social-biological balance, complex and dynamics. The tenets stated in the article confirm interrelation and character of the hygiene standards theory formulation and its prognostic function.

A statistical analysis of dental hygiene students' grades in online and on-campus courses and performance on the National Board Dental Hygiene Exams.

The purpose of the study was to determine if there was a difference between the academic performances--measured by grades and performance on national exams--of dental hygiene students enrolled in online and on-campus nutrition courses. Researchers gathered data from 54 dental hygiene students who took a nutrition class in the fall semesters of 1998 and 1999. Students' ages, their course averages, grade-point averages (GPA), and performance on the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) were correlated, and regression analysis and two sample t-tests were performed on the data. The results indicated a weak r2 value (0.291) for GPA as a predictor of course performance and a low r2 value (0.074) for GPA as a predictor of the NBDHE score. Even though the online students had a higher GPA (not statistically significant), data suggests no difference in course average and performance on NBDHE tests between the online and on-campus students. A trend analysis indicated that students with a lower GPA who enrolled in the online courses performed lower than on-campus students.

[From industrial hygiene and toxicology to environmental hygiene and toxicology: problems and prospects].

BACKGROUND: Low-dose exposures to mixtures of substances have received increasing interest and they involve many different occupational and environmental situations. The presence in the population (working and general) of groups of susceptible individuals is an important public health issue that poses new challenges to science and society. OBJECTIVES: To discuss the evolution from traditional occupational hygiene and toxicology to the new environmental (general and occupational) hygiene and toxicology. RESULTS: Environmental hygiene and toxicology have remarkably improved analytical tools available to solve most of the analytical issues posed by the present exposure scenario. Biomarkers of low-dose exposure, early effects and individual susceptibility are being intensively investigated. CONCLUSIONS: The challenge in this field for the coming years appears to be not the analytical but the medical and ethical implications.

The development of a 'clean sheep policy' in compliance with the new Hygiene Regulation (EC) 853/2004 (Hygiene 2).

The aim of this research was to identify the risk factors associated with the transfer of bacterial contamination from the fleece to the ovine carcass thereby providing the scientific basis for the development and validation of a clean sheep policy. Two hundred sheep in lairage were graded into five categories each consisting of 40 sheep. The categories were as follows; (A) clean and dry; (B) clean and wet; (C) dirty and dry; (D) dirty and wet and (E) visible dags (dung-clotted tufts of wool) categorized by the chief veterinary inspector at the slaughter plant based on the visual inspection of the hygienic status of the fleece. Microbiological evaluations of the carcasses were conducted using swab sampling methods. Total viable counts (TVCs), Enterobacteriaceae and coliform counts were obtained from 40 animals per category at four separate sites (brisket, shoulder, flank and rump) immediately after pelt removal. Statistical analysis of TVC data obtained from the carcass indicated that the dirt level of the fleece had a significant effect on contamination levels when the fleece was dry. Enterobacteriaceae and coliform counts suggest that dirt was a contributing risk factor regardless of wetness or dryness of the animal. The clean sheep policy should therefore differentiate between clean and dirty sheep and mandate additional hygiene measures for the latter.

August Gärtner and building, housing and communal hygiene 100 years of housing hygiene in Jena.

August Gärtner who had been called to the first Chair of Hygiene in Jena in 1886 has provided impulses decisive for the development of hygiene in the fields of construction, housing and communities. He has formulated important requirements for indoor climate, e.g. for heating, ventilation, indoor air temperature, indoor air humidity, avoidance of temperature asymmetry and thermal insulation of houses. His requirements to ensure adequate insulation, e.g. a ratio between window area and floor area of 1:8-1:10, have remained valid until today. Missing attention to his findings with regard to sewage disposal gained on the occasions of two typhoid outbreaks in Jena as early as in 1901 and 1915 resulted in the last water-borne typhoid outbreak in Germany in 1980, in the same place.

Physicochemical, toxicological and hygienic aspects of ethylene oxide application for the sterilization of medical products. III. Setting hygienic norms in sterilized medical products.

Some of the drawbacks are discussed associated with hygienic norms for gaseous sterilizing agents in polymeric products for medical applications. A new approach is proposed for regulating ethylene oxide (EO) in such products. To this end, limiting types of biological effect and its pathways have been determined and substantiated as well as the reliability factor for establishing hygienic norms for EO in medical products. Daily threshold EO limit values were calculated for momentary and repeated exposure of humans. The duration of long-term and short-term exposure of the patient to sterilized products was evaluated on the basis of EO extraction kinetics from a variety of materials. Using daily threshold limit values, threshold residual values (TRV) of EO were calculated for different groups of polymeric products for medical applications.

The problem-oriented dental record: a key to dental hygiene treatment planning and the problem-solving model for dental hygiene practice.

The problem-solving model for dental hygiene practice requires careful assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation to provide quality dental hygiene care. To facilitate this problem-solving approach, a method of recording information in an organized and highly communicative manner must be established. This paper describes the components of a problem-oriented dental record used by students at the Vancouver Community College and discusses the benefits of using this tool in clinical practice.

[Problems concerning pupil's and students' hygiene from the point view of Sanitary-Epidemiological Stations and National Institute of Hygiene].

Based on the status of buildings and conditions to keep them clean, the situation in all types of schools has been investigated within seven years interval (1995-2001). Observed dynamics of changes was related to the background of political system transformations. In the primary schools, improvement was observed within each of the following analyzed aspects: sanitary conditions, use of unadjusted buildings, technical conditions of the buildings, access of pupils to sanitary arrangements. These positive changes in primary schools should be related to the communes self-governments care in running them for several years (instead of the state as it was previously), as well as with phenomenon of size reduction of the least schools (due to the demographic depression, shortening of education time from 8 to 6 years), which were operating in the worst conditions. In the upper secondary the improvement has been noticed within the sanitary conditions and use of the unadjusted buildings. In the same time stagnation in buildings technical condition and students insufficient access to sanitary arrangements were stated. It is a challenge for new hosts of secondary schools--self-government of powiats (which overtook them from the state in January 1, 1999). As results from the study, the functioning conditions of lower secondary schools established in September 1999 are similar to those of primary schools, although they intended to be examples of excellence with modern equipment. A dozen or so percent of pupils and students used in schools desks unadjusted to their height. This situation has to be improved. Data from sanitary-epidemiological stations concerning keeping proper standards of hygienic conditions of educational process in schools should find broader employment, they should be helpful in creating national education policy.

[Influence of milking technique, milking hygiene and environmental hygiene parameters on the microbial contamination of milking machines].

It was the aim of this study to investigate the effect of various factors of the milking technique, milking hygiene and environment on microbial contamination of the milking machine. In 31 dairy herds, the degree of bacterial contamination was examined by taking swabs at four locations (teat cup liner, claw, short and long milk tube) before the milking procedure was started using a standardized protocol (DIN ISO 6887-1:1999). Furthermore, the total germ count was determined in the first milk entering the bulk tank as well as in the bulk tank milk following milking. For each farm, the quality of the milking process and the condition of the milking machine as well as of various environmental factors were recorded. A subjective evaluation of the status of the milking cluster or other parts of the milking machine ("good" or "moderate-poor") gave more information about bacterial contamination than the determination of age and type of material used. A temperature of the rinsing water of < 42 degrees C increased the contamination with Pseudomonas spp. and coliform bacteria. Milking clusters kept out of the cluster pick-up between milking had a higher risk of microbial contamination. Various methods of teat cleaning before milking or of postmilking teat disinfection did not affect the contamination of the milking machine and the bulk tank milk with environmental bacteria. Furthermore, type of bedding material affected bacterial contamination of milking clusters and bulk tank milk. In conclusion, our results suggest that the microbial contamination of the milking machine is not only influenced by the sanitation pro-

[Survey of the Council of Residents of the Italian Society of Hygiene (SItI) on the smoking habits of physicians training in Hygiene and Preventive Medicine.].

This study was conducted on a sample of physicians training in Hygiene and Preventive medicine to evaluate their: smoking habits, awareness of the effects of cigarette smoke on health and attitudes regarding antismoking legislation. Data was obtained through administration of an anonymous questionnaire. A total of 220 physicians were interviewed: 27% was found to be a smoker while 45% of smokers stated that they did not want to quit smoking. These results are similar to those obtained for the general population. Amongst the residents of the various schools of specialisation, there are large differences in habits, awareness and attitudes towards smoke: a lack of professional training on the subject is present.

[Study on health status and oral hygiene of children at a primary school. Health status and oral hygiene in schoolchildren].

The Authors refer about a research made in a primary school after checking mouth sickness in school boys. The research concerns three periods: 1st. medicaL examination, 2 nd. instructions about a correct oral hygiene, 3 rd. anew inspection. The conclusions they made, are the following: now only the children know what they must do for their teeth in order to avoid mouth sickness and how to prevent then, but also their parents and often their teachers are not sensitive to this problem. So it is necessary that the prevention work begun by the dentist, will be carried on by parents and by teachers.

The effect of random voice hand hygiene messages delivered by medical, nursing, and infection control staff on hand hygiene compliance in intensive care.

Hand hygiene (HH) compliance in the intensive care unit has been studied extensively, with short-term, nonsustained compliance often because of lack of ongoing reinforcement. HH messages delivered by health care workers responsible for overseeing staff in the intensive care unit provided continuous reinforcement of HH. Compliance measured through product usage and reported as HH/bed-days increased by 60% for soap and sanitizer combined and 25% for sanitizer usage (P < 001).

The practice of industrial hygiene: Role Delineation Analysis American Board of Industrial Hygiene.

To better assure that the content of the American Board of Industrial Hygiene's Core and Comprehensive Practice Examinations are reflective of the current practice of the profession, the Board conducted a validation of their test specifications. The validation effort involved development of Domains of Practice, i.e. Recognition, Evaluation, Control, and for Comprehensive Practice, Management. Within each domain, Task Statements and the associated knowledge and skills necessary to successfully complete the task were identified. This overall "role delineation" was submitted to a random sample of 200 Certified Industrial Hygienists who were asked to identify the relative importance of each Domain and each Task and identify the percent of time and industrial hygienist might devote to each. An excellent response rate of 68.5% was achieved and provided ABIH with sets of weights for each Domain and Task Statement. These weights will be used by the ABIH to update future versions of the two examinations with initial influence in 1986 followed by a greater impact in 1987.
