[A survey on the medicinal history of Pinellia ternata Breit].

The work in this paper has a twofold aim: 1 Verifying the Chinese drug "Banxia" in medicinal books before 1900 as the tuber of Pinellia ternata (Araceae), While P.ternata in Qizhou (Licheng County, Shandong Province) had been mistaken for P.tripartita which only grow in Japan; 2 proving young tuber of P.pedatisecta to be "Youba" which was confused with "Banxia" in some ancient medicinal books, while "Youba" has been regarded as Arisaema regens so far.

The holistic alternative to scientific medicine: history and analysis.

The resurgence of the holistic health movement in the 1970s can be in part attributed to increasing consumer dissatisfaction with the present system of medical care delivery. This article traces the rise and decline of modern medicine by analyzing the assumption of hegemony by scientific medicine and its practitioners. Then it describes the challenges that holistic medicine's theories and therapies currently pose to scientific medicine's organizational form and practical content. Holistic medicine is assessed in terms of its organizational and conceptual basis, and the relationship between holistic medicine and the needs of advanced capitalist society is discussed.

[Adhesive substances in medicine--history, present status and perspectives].

In the introduction to this study, present state of the progress of tissue adhesives and their use in medicine is discussed. Synthetic adhesives and the fibrin system are described. The advantages and disadvantages of both types of adhesive are compared. The bioadhesive systems used in medicine must meet certain requirements necessary for their application. The composition and preparation of the fibrin adhesives are analyzed in detail. Their effect on the regeneration of tissue cells and the level of histotoxicity are very important. The characteristics of the fibrin adhesive system result from its physiological origin. The filling of the wound with these adhesives improves the natural processes of healing.

[The journal Lijecnicki vjesnik in the history of medicine and the history of medicine in Lijecnicki vjesnik: on the 125th anniversary of the publication of Lijecnicki vjesnik].

Lijecnicki vjesnik, during its 125 years long existence, played important role in promotion of History of medicine on our territory. The first articles, which appeared at the end of 19th century, advanced soon to endeavours for affirmation of History of medicine to academic and research discipline. The most important in this respect are texts written by medical history founders and pioneers such as Lujo Thaller, Lavoslav Glesinger and Mirko Drazen Grmek. The topics ranged from antiquity to 20th century covering general historical, culturological, anthropological, epistemological and bioethical dimension of medicine. Professional medical historians wrote greater part of medical historical articles but also physicians of other disciplines participated. Most intensive period in publishing of medical historical articles corresponds with that of the most intensive efforts in establishing the history of medicine as scientific and scholarly discipline. Pages of Lijecnicki vjesnik have fixed not only struggle for status of this discipline but are chronology of actions aimed to include the results of History of medicine to unique knowledge fund in a context of modern medicine and science.

Mutation databases and other online sites as a resource for transfusion medicine: history and attributes.

Recent advances in molecular biology and technology have provided evidence, at a molecular level, for long-known observations that the human genome is not unique but is characterized by individual sequence variation. At the present time, documentation of genetic variation occurring in a large number of genes is increasing exponentially. The characterization of alleles that encode a variety of blood group antigens has been particularly fruitful for transfusion medicine. Phenotypic variation, as identified by the serologic study of blood group variants, is required to identify the presence of a variant allele. Many of the other alleles currently recorded have been selected and identified on the basis of inherited disease traits. New approaches document single nucleotide polymorphisms that occur throughout the genome and best show how the DNA sequence varies in the human population. The primary data dealing with variant alleles or more general genomic variation are scattered throughout the scientific literature and only within the last few years has information begun to be organized into databases. This article provides guidance on how to access those databases online as a source of information about genetic variation for purposes of molecular, clinical, and diagnostic medicine, research, and teaching. The attributes of the sites are described. A more detailed view of the database dealing specifically with alleles of genes encoding the blood group antigens includes a brief preliminary analysis of the molecular basis for observed polymorphisms. Other online sites that may be particularly useful to the transfusion medicine readership as well as a brief historical account are also presented.
