Why do I hate thee? Conflict misperceptions and intergroup mistrust.

Members of partisan social groups often exaggerate how much their own opinions differ from those of their rivals. In the present two studies, partisans estimated their own and their rivals' attitudes toward different issues related to the social conflict and also made a variety of evaluative judgments about their own and the rival group. The authors found that (a) partisans perceive more disagreement with their rivals about values that are central to their own sides' ideological position than those that are central to their rivals' position and (b) perceptions of disagreement about the partisans' own central values are what predicts partisans' global evaluations of members of the outgroup (e.g., disliking, trait stereotypes, perceived similarity). Furthermore, partisans believed their adversaries were motivated by an opposition to the partisans' own core values rather than by promotion of the adversaries' core values. Discussion concentrates on the theoretical and applied implications of these findings.

Pathologizing dissent: identity politics, Zionism and the 'self-hating Jew'.

This article discusses problems with Kurt Lewin's notion of self-hatred among Jews (Lewin, 1941/1948), and illustrates the ways in which the concept is used in identity politics. It argues that the way the notion of self-hatred is often used makes it problematic as a psychological concept because it requires that we accept particular definitions of group identities and particular political positions as central to those identities. Often, however, such issues are disputed by group members. Examination of the literature illustrates that it is rarely a straightforward decision whether those behaviours or attitudes identified as manifestations of self-hatred are best explained in this way. The function of the self-hatred concept in current debate over Israeli policy is described as an example of how arguments over identity are part of political conflict. In the case of current Middle Eastern politics, the concept of self-hatred is used by rightwing Zionists to label those who criticize policies of the current Israeli government as disloyal and pathological.

Grandparenting: intergenerational love and hate.

Grandparenthood can have multiple meanings for grandparents just as grandchildhood can have diverse meanings for grandchildren. Ideally the joys of being a grandparent help to compensate for life's sorrows, although premature grandparenthood may be experienced instead as a nuisance or even a burden if grandparents have to assume parental responsibilities. Of course, storybook grandparents including the grandfathers of Heidi, Little Lord Fauntleroy, and the Box Car Children, never seem to resent having to act as surrogate parents. They enjoy it and do a superb job of meeting their grandchildren's needs. The popularity of these stories is probably due to the vicarious pleasure they provide for children who are angry at their parents and fantasizing about more gratifying caretakers--their grandparents. Grandparents who have a good relationship with their adult children and the children's spouses are more likely to develop a gratifying relationship with their grandchildren, though occasionally grandparents and grandchildren unite against the generation in between. Children utilize grandparents as objects for identification, as links to their history and as a source of pleasure and comfort. When idealization is given up in adolescence, the grandparent-grandchild relationship often continues to be mutually accepting and relatively free of conflict. Grandparents are provided a third opportunity to resolve developmental crises as they observe and try to help grandchildren struggling with the same crisis.
