The challenges of dental laboratory technology education: will it survive?

Accredited formal educational programs in dental laboratory technology are now under pressures at levels they have never undergone before. Already pushed to the point where many have had to close their doors, the remainder are struggling to survive with already strained resources. Whether or not they will be able to maintain their existence will depend upon their ability to attract quality students, provide them with a good, up to date education, and do so with ever increasing efficiency.

A nontraditional approach to medical laboratory technology education.

The nontraditional program in medical laboratory technology for adult students was initiated at Corning Community College in 1975. The overall design of the model permits adults who have gained knowledge and skills as a result of their work experience to have opportunities for the assessment of these learnings and for flexible, modular instruction to increase their level of competency in medical technology. The central goal of this model is to increase the educational alternatives available to the adult population, specifically, the working adult in the medical laboratory. This approach enables individuals who are currently employed to attain an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree and eligibility for certification as a medical (clinical) laboratory technician.

[An approach to the structuring of printed materials in education technology for the independent study of the pharmacotherapy of emergency states].

In view of the fact that the sources of information (text-books, manuals, monographs) used in higher medical institutions lack a clear-cut system of directing the learning activities of those being thought, we have devised a variant of a manual that stipulates that a goal be defined, the content of pharmacotherapy of urgent states chosen, teaching material organized, a system of individual tasks set, results of learning controlled, auto-education and self-control exercised. The above type manuals are supposed to be a means of directing the activity aimed at learning to apprehend and must be a mainstay in the realization of the programme-deliberate management of quality of training a specialist.
