Composite resin repair of porcelain denture teeth.

An effective temporary repair of fractured poreclain denture teeth involves abrasive treatment of the fractured tooth surface followed by a composite resin buildup. This study has demonstrated that the best potential retention of the composite buildup can be obtained through abrasive treatment by a course diamond stone.

Evaluation of damage to removable dentures in two cities in Finland.

The number of damaged dentures and type of damage to removable dentures repaired in dental laboratories was investigated using a questionnaire sent to 24 dental laboratories in Finland. Eight variables were examined for each damaged denture. The results showed that the type of dentures most commonly needing repair was the complete upper denture (49%). The most frequent type of damage was breakdown of the acrylic base and loosening of an artificial tooth. The chi-square test established a statistical dependence (p < 0.005) between damaged dentures and their age. Damaged upper partial dentures most frequently had natural teeth or fixed prostheses as antagonist teeth. Damaged lower skeletal dentures and acrylic partial dentures had a complete denture as the antagonist (p < 0.05). Removable dentures made of acrylic resin material seemed to break despite strengtheners, such as clasp wire.

Technique for the repair of removable partial denture backings.

An easy and practical technique has been described for replacement of a removable partial denture retentive pin as an alternative to fabricating a new removable partial denture or reprocessing the acrylic resin part of the old metal framework. The technique uses the Hydroflame II soldering unit, which provides controlled, localized application of heat without damaging any acrylic resin that may be present.

[In vivo repair of a fixed denture using veneers. Description of cases].

This article describes a technique for restoration of a cohesive porcelain fracture in the pontic of an anterior bridge, and the masking of exposed roots after gingival recession on two lateral incisors supporting a 5 elements bridge, using IPS Empress porcelain veneers.

Repair of broken dentures in resin undercuts.

This technique utilizes both irreversible hydrocolloid impression material and fast-setting stone to repair a denture which has fractured in a tissue undercut. This procedure maintains the same tissue surface detail on the repaired denture as existed on the denture prior to the repair.

Repair strength of denture base resins using various methods.

The object of this study was to measure the repair strength of denture base resins repaired using, (a) standard heat activated polymerising resin, (b) a denture base resin especially formulated for microwave-activated polymerisation, and (c) an autopolymerising resin. Comparisons were made between conventional water bath and microwave curing and autopolymerised resin repairs, using transverse bend and impact tests. Repairs with the two heat-activated denture base resins were carried out using conventional dental flasking procedures, whereas autopolymerised resin repairs were carried out in open gypsum moulds. The results indicate that the transverse strength, and impact resistance of the resin specimens repaired with microwave irradiation were generally superior to specimens repaired by using a water bath curing cycle or the use of an autopolymerising resin.

Outreach dental service for persons with special needs in Hong Kong.

The authors describe the acceptance and efficiency of an outreach dental service, which provided oral health care to persons with special needs in Hong Kong. Portable dental equipment was transported to various institutions. Basic dental care including prevention, scaling, restoration, extraction, and denture repair was provided free of charge. Elderly adults living in institutions were the main service recipients, but other people with special needs, including physically disabled and persons with mental retardation were also reached. One-third of the patients had dental pain or sensitivity, and 70% had not visited a dentist for more than three years. Dental care was provided to 6,867 patients over four years. Feedback from the patients showed that more than 90% of them were satisfied with the service. These findings indicate that patients with special needs in Hong Kong are in great need of dental care. An outreach dental service appears to be both appropriate and efficient in providing care to these persons.
