Migration and urbanization in Ecuador: a view from the coast.

"The present study takes a regional view of urbanization and migration in coastal Ecuador, and presents field data collected [in 1970 and 1971] in the port city of Manta. This study seeks to account for various national and international influences that work to shape conditions in Manta, and on the coast generally, and to specify and account for patterns of socieconomic inequality, particularly as they relate to migration and urbanization."

Geographical characteristics of migration linkages in the Moscow capital region.

"A study of migration processes in the Moscow Capital Region over the period 1970-1985 begins by assessing their contribution to overall population growth within the region vis-a-vis natural increase and territorial and administrative changes. Attention then is turned toward movements both within the Moscow Capital Region and between it and other oblasts of the European RSFSR. Although the overall volume of migration within the Moscow capital Region and between it and remaining oblasts of the European RSFSR declined, the relative popularity of the former as a destination among migrants in European Russia remained unchanged."

[Continuities and changes in Swiss migration policy].

"In May 1991 the Swiss Federal Government...submitted to the Parliament some proposals aiming at reshaping the immigration policy. In this article, we give an overview of the current re-organisation of policy, we analyse the underlying logic of the adopted measures as well as their possible consequences, and we try to show how the policy towards foreigners interferes with the policy towards refugees and asylum-seekers. We describe the political and economic motivations behind the changes in policy.... We show how immigration policy and asylum policy have become gradually incompatible.... The contradiction is obvious in three aspects of the current policy: the ethnic selection, the selection according to occupations, and the legitimation of the selection." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

An overview of the socio-economic and demographic transition among the Santal: a census analysis.

The Santals are described as the largest most integrated and possibly the most resilient tribe in eastern India. "The paper aims at looking into the parameters that set Santals in the process of socio-economic and demographic transformation and subsequently search for, the plausible explanation for the underlying mechanism for such changes.... The paper discusses the growth of their population and finds that Santals are growing below national average with increase in concentration in some of the pockets in Bihar and West Bengal, while it is spreading towards evenness in Orissa. In the absence of 1991 census data on the tribe wise breakdown the analysis has been restricted to the 1961, 1971 and 1981 census returns and availability of the literature on the tribe."

Income inequality in small regions: a study of Australian statistical divisions.

This paper provides "empirical analysis of the nature of the relationship between economic development of regions and income inequality in Australian sub-state regions. It does so in the context of considering the validity of the 'augmented inverted U' hypothesis and the influence of factors such as the business cycle, political issues, and demographic trends, which are likely to cause income inequality to change over time." Data are from the Australian censuses for the years 1976 and 1981.

[Migration and socioeconomic changes in the community of Zoogocho, Oaxaca].

"This study of migration and the socioeconomic dynamics of the community of Zoogocho in the state of Oaxaca [Mexico] is an example of what happens in rural areas when Indian-campesinos establish contacts with foreign parts. The penetration of alien socioeconomic and cultural values alters both family and communal structures to such an extent that available resources prove insufficient in competing with the colliding external society. This leads to increasingly more complex movements of the population, the manifestations, causes and consequences of which vary through time not only in the places of origin but also in destinations."
