Gene expression associated with in vivo induction of early phase-long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampal mossy fiber-Cornus Ammonis (CA)3 pathway.

Affymetrix microarray technology was used to characterize whole-hippocampus gene expression associated with in vivo N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-R-independent long-term potentiation (LTP) in the mossy fiber (MF)-Cornus Ammonis (CA)3 pathway of adult male F344 rats. Acute MF responses were evoked by stimulation of the MF bundle and recorded in stratum lucidum of CA3. Following recording of baseline responses at 0.05 Hz, animals received either CPP (NMDA-R antagonist, 10 mg/kg) or naloxone (opioid-R antagonist, 10 mg/kg). LTP was induced by two 100 Hz 1-sec trains at the intensity sufficient to evoke 50% of the maximal response. Responses were collected for an additional hour. In controls, MF responses were collected at 0.05 Hz for 1 hr, but 100 Hz trains were not delivered. Hippocampi were harvested prior to total RNA isolation. Fragmented cRNA was hybridized to a rat U34 neurobiology array. F344 rats exhibited characteristic LTP in the presence of CPP and LTP blockade in the presence of naloxone. As a result, genes associated with both NMDA-independent LTP and naloxone-induced blockade were identified. These include genes involved in transmitter transport, intracellular messengers, growth factors and ion channels. Up-regulated include NMDA-R2D, neuropeptide Y (NPY), proenkephalin, BDNF and NGFR. Down-regulated genes include IGF-1 and GABA-B.

[Effect of covering the ground under canopy tree with straw on growth of dogwood (Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc.)].

Experiments showed that the growth, blooming and bearing of dogwood (Cornus officinalis) were improved by covering the ground under canopy tree with straw. Growth of shoots, weight and thickness of 100 fresh leaves, and mineral nutrition of leaves were significantly higher than those of controls. Fruit buds of shoots, fruit setting per cluster, weight of 100 fresh fruits and yield per tree were increased by 17.9%, 20%, 31.7% and 33.5% respectively. Compared with uncovered trees, the blooming period of covered trees was delayed by 4-6 days.

Osmotic factors of dehardening in cornus Florida L.

The killing temperature for cortical cells from the flowering dogwood changes abruptly from -25 C to -15 C during dehardening. Cell sap concentration, minimum critical cell volume, and osmotically inactive cell volume show a progressive change during dehardening, but only cell sap concentration is correlated directly with the killing temperature, showing the same step change. There is a limit to the extent to which hardy dogwood cells can be osmotically reduced in volume. Beyond this limiting volume, the extracellular osmotically can be increased without further volume reduction. Ultimately the cell succumbs, presumably to an osmotic pressure gradient. Nonhardy cells do not exhibit this resistance to shrinkage. The ability to resist volume reduction is probably a crucial factor in the freezing resistance of dogwood cortical cells.

[Structure and topography of the nucleus proprius cornus dorsalis of the spinal cord of horses].

The studies performed on spinal cords of two horses revealed that cells of the nucleus of the own dorsal horn are present in all segments of lumbo-sacral part of the spinal cord. The nucleus is composed of two parts: basal and marginal. Basal part is composed of large and medium size cells situated in 2/3 of the lower part of the grey substance of the dorsal horn. The marginal part of the described nucleus is composed of elongated and spindle shaped cells situated along the dorsal margine of the grey substance of the dorsal horn. Continuity of the nucleus in lumbo-sacral part of the spinal cord was conserved and only constrictions due to a various number of cells forming the nucleus in individual segments of spinal cord were noted.
