Functional and Nutritional Potential of Chickpea Protein Hydrolysates: A Systematic Review and Plant-protein Network Analysis.

Chickpea is a protein-rich legume increasingly explored as a substrate for functional plant-based ingredients. Chickpea protein hydrolysates (CPHs) and chickpea-derived peptides (CPs), obtained through enzymatic hydrolysis or simulated gastrointestinal digestion, may provide technological and biological properties while supporting the valorization of chickpea fractions and by-products. This review integrates a network analysis of title-abstract terms from 5,728 unique Scopus and PubMed records on plant protein hydrolysates with a systematic review of 72 studies focused on CPH production, peptide characterization, bioactivity, and translational gaps. The evidence indicates that CPHs and CPs show promising antioxidant, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, lipid-lowering, immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer-related activities, mainly supported by biochemical assays, cell models, and animal studies. However, heterogeneous hydrolysis protocols, incomplete peptide characterization, inconsistent bioactivity methods, limited scale-up evidence, and the absence of human intervention trials restrict translation. Future studies should prioritize standardized protocols, mechanistic validation, bioavailability, sensory and regulatory assessment, food-matrix validation, and clinical trials.

Sitosterolemia: evolving strategies for earlier diagnosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sitosterolemia is a rare autosomal recessive lipid disorder caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in ABCG5 or ABCG8 , resulting in excessive intestinal absorption and impaired biliary excretion of plant sterols. Although historically considered exceptionally rare, recent genetic studies suggest the disorder is substantially underdiagnosed, with marked phenotypic heterogeneity ranging from xanthomas and premature atherosclerosis to hematologic abnormalities, and frequently mimics familial hypercholesterolemia. This review summarizes recent advances in the clinical, biological, and genetic diagnosis of sitosterolemia, with a focus on strategies that may facilitate earlier detection. RECENT FINDINGS: Phytosterol quantification, particularly sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol, remains indispensable for accurate diagnosis. Hematologic abnormalities, including hemolytic anemia, stomatocytosis, and macrothrombocytopenia, are increasingly recognized as valuable diagnostic clues complementing the biochemical approach. Expanded variant catalogs for ABCG5/ABCG8 and genome-wide association studies have revealed potentially polygenic contributions to phytosterol metabolism extending beyond these two genes. However, no specific guidelines have yet been established for cascade screening. SUMMARY: Earlier diagnosis requires integration of clinical, biochemical, hematologic, and genetic data. Plasma phytosterol measurement remains the diagnostic cornerstone. Improved disease awareness, broader access to sterol testing, and expanded genetic screening may reduce diagnostic delays and enable timely management, including ezetimibe and dietary phytosterol restriction.

School-based sexual violence prevention: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Sexual violence profoundly affects the health and development of children, adolescents, and young adults, representing a persistent challenge to public policy. This systematic review examined the effectiveness of school-based interventions aimed at prevention. METHODS: Eighteen randomized controlled trials published between 2012 and 2024 were retrieved from four major databases. The programs were implemented in primary, secondary, and higher education settings and targeted children, adolescents, and young adults. RESULTS: The results revealed improvements in knowledge and attitude, particularly regarding consent and awareness, whereas evidence supporting behavioral changes was less frequent and often limited. Methodological limitations, such as short follow-up periods and participant attrition, restricted the assessment of long-term outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: This review highlights the importance of multicomponent, participatory, and culturally sensitive approaches, along with the integration of digital tools and continuous evaluation systems, to strengthen the role of schools as safe and transformative spaces in the prevention of sexual violence. IMPLICATIONS AND CONTRIBUTIONS: This systematic review suggests that school-based interventions hold significant potential for the prevention of sexual violence. It identifies promising strategies and reinforces the importance of culturally sensitive, sustained, evidence-based approaches to ensure learning environments that are safe, protective, and promotive of gender equity.

Recent advances in electrode materials for electrochemical detection of zearalenone.

Zearalenone (ZEN) is an estrogenic mycotoxin commonly found in cereals, animal feed, and processed foods, making it an important concern for food safety and public health. Conventional chromatographic and immunological methods can detect ZEN; however, they often require expensive instruments, lengthy sample preparation, and skilled personnel, which restrict their use for rapid and on-site testing. Electrochemical sensors have attracted enormous interest of the scientific community because of their high sensitivity, rapid response, low cost, miniaturization potential, and compatibility with portable systems. The analytical performance of the electrochemical sensors is strongly influenced by electrode materials, morphology, conductivity, porosity, surface functionality, and the efficiency of bioreceptor immobilization. Despite several reviews on mycotoxin detection, a systematic assessment connecting electrode-material design, modification strategies, sensing mechanisms, and electroanalytical performance specifically for ZEN sensing remain limited. This review critically evaluates recent advances in metal oxides, carbon-based materials, metal-organic- and covalent organic frameworks, MXenes, polymers, and hybrid composites for electrochemical ZEN detection. Particular attention has been given to their roles in electron transfer, analyte enrichment, selectivity, and real-sample analysis. The review also compares the major limitations of current sensing systems, including complex fabrication, matrix interference, insufficient long-term stability, poor inter-electrode reproducibility, and limited scalability. Finally, future directions for developing robust, cost-effective, portable, and commercially viable ZEN sensors are discussed.

Beyond Photometric Consistency: Addressing Loss Insensitivity to Depth Noise in Endoscopic Estimation via Error Calibration.

Self-supervised monocular depth estimation in endoscopy is fundamentally constrained by the ill-posed nature of photometric supervision. In this work, we identify a critical yet overlooked cause of this ambiguity: the inherent insensitivity of photometric loss to depth noise. To overcome this intrinsic limitation, we propose Depth Error Calibration Learning (DECL), a two-stage framework that suppresses prediction variance and mitigates residual errors in self-supervised depth estimation. In Stage I (Variance Reduction), a cyclic depth generation strategy produces multiple depth hypotheses for the input image. The per-pixel empirical variance is quantified and integrated into a dedicated variance loss term, which penalizes inconsistent predictions and encourages the network to generate more stable and reliable depth estimates. In Stage II (Bias Calibration), an image-conditioned diffusion model refines the Stage-I depth prior and mitigates structured residuals through iterative denoising, thereby improving geometric accuracy and global consistency. Extensive experiments on three public endoscopic datasets demonstrate that DECL achieves consistent improvements over representative self-supervised monocular depth estimation methods under the evaluated protocols. Moreover, ablation studies on two representative backbones indicate that DECL is not restricted to a single network implementation, while broader validation on additional backbone families remains necessary. Matching-adjusted indirect comparison of fruquintinib versus ramucirumab in advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma.

Aim: Fruquintinib (Fruq), a selective VEGFR 1/2/3 inhibitor, showed a significant progression-free survival (PFS) benefit in the Phase III FRUTIGA trial for advanced gastric/gastroesophageal junction (G/GEJ) adenocarcinoma. Ramucirumab (RAM), an anti-VEGFR2 antibody, demonstrated efficacy in the RAINBOW-Asia trial. This anchored matching-adjusted indirect comparison (MAIC) evaluated Fruq plus paclitaxel versus RAM plus paclitaxel as second-line therapy for G/GEJ adenocarcinoma in the absence of head-to-head trials. Materials & methods: Data from individual patients in the FRUTIGA study (N = 703) and aggregated data from the RAINBOW-Asia study (N = 440) were analyzed. Baseline characteristics were balanced using entropy balancing. The placebo plus paclitaxel (PBO + PTX) groups served as the common comparators. The primary outcome was PFS; secondary outcomes included overall survival, objective response rate (ORR) and disease control rate (DCR). Rates of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) were also compared as an exploratory outcome using an adjusted indirect risk difference. Sensitivity analyses included restricted mean survival time and simulated treatment comparison. Results: After weighting (effective sample size = 564), baseline covariates were balanced. The anchored MAIC demonstrated that Fruq + PTX significantly improved PFS compared with RAM + PTX (HR: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.51-0.96; p = 0.0280), corresponding to a 30% reduction in progression risk, with a significant restricted mean survival time benefit of 1.18 months at 20 months (95% CI: 0.08-2.27; p = 0.024). Fruq achieved significantly higher ORR (OR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.16-2.68; p = 0.008) and DCR (OR: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.33-2.83; p < 0.001). Overall survival was similar (0.97; 95% CI: 0.73-1.30; p = 0.8640). Subgroup analyses showed PFS benefits with Fruq in patients with ECOG PS 1, peritoneal metastases and two or fewer metastatic sites. In sensitivity analysis, the simulated treatment comparison also suggested a PFS benefit for Fruq + PTX (HR: 0.40, 95% CI: 0.32-0.50; p < 0.0001). For any-grade TEAEs, the indirect comparison showed higher adjusted relative incidences of increased bilirubin with Fruq + PTX than with RAM + PTX (RD: 12.3%; 95% CI: 2.3-22.4%, p < 0.05) and of hypokalemia (RD: 9.0%; 95% CI: 1.5-16.4%, p < 0.05). For grade ≥3 TEAEs, the adjusted relative incidence of decreased body weight was higher with Fruq + PTX than with RAM + PTX (RD: 2.9%; 95% CI: 0.6-5.2%, p < 0.05). The adjusted relative incidences of increased AST, ALT and hypocalcemia were numerically lower in the fruquintinib group than in the RAM group. Conclusion: This MAIC indicates that Fruq + PTX may be more effective than RAM + PTX in second-line advanced G/GEJ adenocarcinoma, with potentially improved PFS, ORR and DCR, and similar overall survival. Safety analyses suggested generally comparable safety profiles across the two regimens. Fruq + PTX remains a valuable treatment option, offering important comparative evidence for clinical and health technology assessment decisions. Orbital involvement in sickle cell disease: A systematic review.

Orbital involvement in sickle cell disease (SCD) is rare but potentially vision-threatening and is often misdiagnosed due to overlap with infectious orbital disease. We conducted a systematic review of case reports and series describing orbital complications in patients with confirmed SCD, following PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines. Across 53 studies, 76 cases were identified. Patients were predominantly male (77.6%), with an average age of 13.2 years. Orbital disease was the initial SCD manifestation in 6.6%. Presentations included periorbital edema in all, proptosis in 64.1%, restricted ocular motility in 56.5%, reduced visual acuity in 28.1%, and bilateral involvement in 38.2%. Laboratory findings commonly included leukocytosis (73%) and raised inflammatory markers (86.7%). Radiologically, orbital subperiosteal hematoma were observed in 70%, combined orbital bone infarction and hematoma in 38.2%, and orbital bone infarction alone in 19.7%. Magnetic resonance imaging is critical for accurate diagnosis. Intracranial hemorrhage was present in 9.2%. Less frequent manifestations included orbital apex syndrome, lacrimal gland disease, and nonspecific soft tissue swelling. Management was primarily conservative (82.9%), and surgery was reserved for vision-threatening or intracranial complications. Complete recovery was achieved in 93.1% of cases. While severe vision-threatening complications are uncommon, early recognition remains critical to optimising outcomes in sickle cell orbitopathy.

A profile of deaths in children at the Diepkloof Forensic Pathology Services mortuary in Gauteng, South Africa from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2020.

This retrospective study was conducted to address the scarcity of knowledge regarding unnatural child deaths in South Africa. This was done by analysing cases admitted to the Diepkloof Forensic Pathology Services mortuary between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2020. Data from FPS death registers and FPS case files were used to profile: (1) the incidence, causes and manner of death, circumstances of death, and ancillary investigations performed at autopsy; and (2) to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on trauma-related child deaths. Of 4 704 decedents, 535 (11.4%) were children, predominantly male (55.5%) and Black (94.8%). Accidental deaths were the most common manner of death (42.6%), primarily due to road traffic accidents, burns, and aspiration. Homicides accounted for 6.5% of all deaths in children, most frequently involving sharp force or gunshot injuries. Cranio-cerebral injuries predominated in trauma-related deaths. In 2020, compared to preceding years, with the implementation of the COVID-19 restrictions, there was a decrease in trauma-related child fatalities. These findings suggest that many child deaths are potentially preventable through government implementation of improved safety interventions and community education.

Transcriptomic insights into exogenous fatty acid-enhanced halotolerance in Zygosaccharomyces rouxii.

BACKGROUND: High salinity restricts microbial growth during brine-based food fermentation. Although exogenous unsaturated fatty acids improve the salt tolerance of Zygosaccharomyces rouxii, the associated transcriptional mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the transcriptomic response of Z. rouxii CGMCC 3791 to palmitoleic acid (C16:1) under high salt conditions. RESULTS: Cells were cultured in yeast extract peptone dextrose (YPD) containing 120 g L-1 NaCl, with or without 20 μg mL-1 C16:1. They were analyzed by RNA sequencing. Principal component analysis clearly separated the two treatments. Using q < 0.05 and |log2 fold change| > 1, 23 differentially expressed genes were identified - three upregulated and 20 downregulated. INO1, MLS1, POX1, MEP2, and SOD5 were among the major responsive genes. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses indicated that peroxisome-associated functions, lipid metabolism, oxidative stress responses, nitrogen utilization, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling were the principal C16:1-responsive processes. CONCLUSION: Exogenous C16:1 elicited a focused transcriptional adjustment rather than broad transcriptome-wide reprogramming in salt-stressed Z. rouxii. The results indicated that peroxisome-linked lipid processes and redox regulation were candidate mechanisms underlying fatty-acid-associated halotolerance and provided targets for improving the robustness of high-salt food fermentation. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Comparative genomics and full-length transcriptome profiling of wing morphs in Tetrix grossus (Orthoptera: Tetrigidae).

Wing polymorphism represents a paradigmatic dispersal-reproduction trade-off, yet its molecular basis remains uncharacterised in the phylogenetically distant pygmy grasshoppers (Tetrigidae). Here we integrate comparative genomics across ten orthopteran species with full-length transcriptomics of long-winged (FL) and short-winged (FS) Tetrix grossus. OrthoFinder recovered 118 orthogroups specific to T. grossus. Against a backdrop of pronounced gene-family contraction (36 expansions versus 222 contractions; net -186, mirrored at the ancestral Tetrix node, +37/-140), we identified an ancestral, Tetrix-specific expansion of hormone-regulation (12 genes; fold enrichment 7.93) and lipid/carbohydrate-metabolic families organised into syntenic clusters, alongside 513 positively selected genes enriched for integrin-mediated cell adhesion (6 genes), a process relevant to epithelial and appendage morphogenesis. Full-length transcriptomics of one long-winged (FL) and one short-winged (FS) adult female detected 7530 (FL) and 7515 (FS) expressed genes, with 794 FL- and 776 FS-restricted transcriptome-derived SNP-associated genes. The FL morph was enriched for an EGFR/Ras-Rho developmental-patterning axis and neuromuscular flight genes, whereas the FS morph was enriched for insulin/peptide-hormone response and growth-regulatory loci. Overall, we present genomic resources and testable hypotheses concerning the evolution and regulation of wing morphs in Tetrigidae rather than a validated genetic architecture of wing-morph determination.

Fluoride as a Modifier of Metallome Homeostasis: A Systematic Review of Animal Studies.

Fluoride is widely used for caries prevention due to its effects on mineralized tissues, yet its potential role as a modifier of systemic metal homeostasis remains insufficiently explored. This systematic review synthesizes preclinical evidence on the association between fluoride exposure and changes in metal and semi-metal concentrations across biological matrices. A comprehensive search strategy was conducted across major databases without language or date restrictions, following SyRF, CAMARADES and PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Thirty-one animal studies were included, encompassing multiple species, exposure conditions and analytical approaches. Despite substantial methodological heterogeneity, consistent patterns emerged. Fluoride exposure was associated with element-specific redistribution of the metallome rather than uniform change. Essential elements were predominantly depleted, most consistently zinc, copper and manganese, whereas the toxic metals lead and cadmium tended to be retained. This contrast between homeostatically regulated essential elements that are lost and non-regulated toxic metals that accumulate supports the hypothesis that fluoride differentially modifies the distribution and retention of co-existing elements. The novelty of this review lies in integrating metallomic outcomes across experimental models, highlighting fluoride as a potential systemic modulator rather than a tissue-specific agent. Although variability in study design and risk of bias limits causal inference, the consistent directionality of findings across models reinforces their biological plausibility and translational relevance.

Molecular mechanisms of neuroendocrine regulation of molting in the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis): A transcriptomic analysis based on eyestalk ablation model.

Molting disability severely restricts the sustainable aquaculture of the Chinese mitten crab, yet the neuroendocrine mechanisms coordinating physiological responses remain poorly understood. Using unilateral eyestalk ablation to remove the primary source of molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH), we performed time-resolved transcriptomic profiling of the thoracic ganglion at 24 h (early premolt) and 48 h (ecdysis) post-ablation. We identified 2825 differentially expressed genes and uncovered a biphasic molecular response. At 24 h, the thoracic ganglion activates pathways associated with neuromuscular adaptation, oxidative stress, and cardiac muscle contraction. Notably, the arachidonic acid metabolism pathway is selectively rewired: cytochrome P450 ω-hydroxylases (CYP2J2, CYP4V2) are upregulated, while competing branches (epoxide hydrolase, cyclooxygenase) are suppressed, promoting local synthesis of the potent vasoconstrictor 20-HETE within the thoracic ganglion. This enzymatic switch provides a mechanistic link between MIH withdrawal and the local generation of elevated hemolymph pressure required for molting. By 48 h, the transcriptional program shifts toward chitin-based extracellular matrix remodeling, glycosphingolipid biosynthesis, and synaptic reorganization. Collectively, our findings redefine the thoracic ganglion as an active neuroendocrine integrator that translates reduced MIH signaling into phased physiological outputs, revealing a "neuro-endocrine-hemolymph pressure" regulatory axis. This study provides novel molecular targets (e.g., CYP2J2, CHS1, UGCG) for mitigating molting disability in E. sinensis aquaculture.

Suicide in rural South Africa before and during COVID-19: evidence from forensic mortuary data in Limpopo Province.

Suicide is a growing public health concern in South Africa, with rural provinces such as Limpopo facing heightened vulnerability due to limited mental health services and socio-economic inequalities. Evidence on the impact of COVID-19 on suicide in rural contexts remains limited. This study examined suicide trends in Limpopo Province and changes associated with the COVID-19 period. A retrospective interrupted time series analysis was conducted using forensic mortality data from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2021, allowing assessment of pre-existing trends and changes following COVID-19 lockdowns. Among 5770 unnatural deaths, 957 were suicides. The proportion of suicides increased from 29.5% in 2019 to 36.9% in 2021. Suicides predominantly occurred among males and young adults, with hanging accounting for over 90% of deaths throughout. Interrupted time series analysis revealed a significant downward trend in suicide cases during the strict national lockdown (Alert Level 5), with a 31% reduction in incidence (IRR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.49-0.98). Less restrictive lockdown levels showed no significant effects. Suicide mortality increased prior to COVID-19, with a subsequent decline during the strictest lockdown period. Stable demographic patterns and methods highlight persistent vulnerabilities and the need for sustained suicide-prevention strategies beyond pandemic.

Epitranscriptomic erasers in bivalves: Evolutionary divergence and species-specific transcriptional plasticity of the ALKBH family under acute thermal stress.

The AlkB homolog (ALKBH) family of Fe(II)/α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases mediates nucleic acid demethylation, thereby governing RNA metabolism and genomic stability. Despite their pivotal roles in epitranscriptomic regulation across vertebrates, the evolutionary dynamics and functional significance of ALKBH proteins in bivalve mollusks remain largely unexplored. Here, we present a comprehensive phylogenomic analysis of 210 ALKBH genes identified across 35 bivalve species. Our analyses reveal a distinct evolutionary trajectory characterized by the lineage-specific loss of ALKBH4 and the restricted distribution of ALKBH5 to the Mytilidae family, contrasting sharply with vertebrate repertoires. Using the noble scallop (Chlamys nobilis) and Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) as model systems, we demonstrate that ALKBH genes exhibit conserved spatiotemporal expression patterns, with pronounced enrichment in gonadal tissues and during metamorphic transitions, implicating these enzymes in gametogenesis and larval development. Furthermore, comparative thermal stress experiments reveal divergent transcriptional plasticity: the subtropical scallop C. nobilis mounts rapid, transient induction of ALKBH1/2/6 under heat shock, whereas the eurythermal oyster C. gigas maintains sustained ALKBH3 expression, potentially underpinning its superior thermal tolerance. Conversely, cold stress elicits bimodal regulation in C. nobilis, with ALKBH1/2 upregulation contrasting with ALKBH6/7/8 suppression. These findings illuminate the functional diversification of bivalve ALKBH genes and their potential utility as molecular biomarkers for assessing developmental competence and thermal resilience in shellfish aquaculture.

A profile of firearm-related fatalities admitted to the Diepkloof Forensic Pathology Service Soweto medico-legal mortuary during the COVID-19 and post COVID-19 periods.

This retrospective descriptive study examined firearm-related fatalities during (April-December 2020; n = 241) and after (April-December 2023; n = 299) COVID-19 lockdowns using 540 cases from the Diepkloof Forensic Pathology Service, Soweto, South Africa. Data was obtained from autopsy reports, forensic records, police statements, and death scene documentation. Firearm violence affected young adult Black males (22-43 years), with only minor demographic shifts post-pandemic. The overall burden and core patterns of violence remained stable, with criminal activity - primarily robbery and interpersonal violence - persisting as the leading contexts, and homicide the dominant manner of death. Post-COVID-19 findings demonstrated contextual shifts, including increased incidents in public and social environments, reflecting greater mobility and resumption of social activity. A significant rise in mean blood alcohol concentration (0.09 g/100 mL vs 0.14 g/100 mL; p < 0.0001) suggests increased alcohol involvement following easing of restrictions. Unfortunately, persistent information gaps, noted particularly in circumstantial history, incident location, firearm type, highlighting the need for improved data provision and capture systems. While the epidemiology of firearm-related fatalities remained unchanged, the post-COVID-19 period was characterised by increased alcohol involvement, shifts toward public-space violence, and fewer gunshot wounds per victim, suggesting changes in situational and behavioural dynamics rather than underlying drivers of violence.

Artificial intelligence for dental caries detection: An umbrella review.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been proposed as a tool to improve dental caries detection across imaging modalities; however, its clinical value remains uncertain. This umbrella review aimed to synthesize and critically appraise systematic reviews evaluating AI for caries detection and diagnosis. An umbrella review was conducted following PRIOR guidance (PROSPERO CRD420261340728). Searches were performed in MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar up to 15 March 2026. Methodological quality was assessed using AMSTAR 2, and overlap of primary studies was quantified using the corrected covered area (CCA). Seventeen systematic reviews were included, of which five reported diagnostic test accuracy meta-analyses using bivariate or HSROC models. Across these meta-analyses, pooled sensitivity ranged from 0.76 to 0.94 and specificity from 0.85 to 0.91. Most systems were based on deep learning models applied to bitewing radiographs and intraoral photographs. However, substantial heterogeneity was observed in imaging modalities, lesion thresholds, analytical tasks, and evaluation metrics. In addition, a high degree of overlap across reviews and recurrent methodological limitations, including reliance on retrospective datasets, limited external validation, and inconsistent reporting, substantially weaken the reliability of the evidence. Although AI models demonstrate high diagnostic performance under experimental conditions, current evidence does not support their use as stand-alone diagnostic tools. Their clinical applicability remains limited, and implementation should be restricted to decision-support contexts until robust prospective validation demonstrates meaningful impact on clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.

Transcriptome analysis of the pectoral fin degeneration in half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis).

Appendage degeneration is a notable morphological feature of some teleosts with specialized benthic lifestyles. The half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) undergoes severe pectoral fin regression during metamorphosis. However, the molecular basis underlying rapid pectoral fin degeneration remains unclear. Here, we performed time-series transcriptome sequencing on pectoral fins at pre-metamorphosis, metamorphosis peak and post-metamorphosis to characterize the molecular changes associated with pectoral fin degeneration. Transcriptional dynamics and functional enrichment showed that no significant enrichment of classical apoptosis-related transcriptional pathways was detected during pectoral fin degeneration. Instead, sustained downregulation of twist1b, identified as a transcriptomic candidate, together with significant upregulation of ssh1, coupled with enrichment of lysosome and ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) pathways, suggested enhanced tissue remodeling during pectoral fin degeneration. Temporal expression clustering revealed heterochronic misalignment in the developmental gene expression: upstream initiator tbx5 was upregulated at early metamorphosis, while downstream maintenance signal fgf10 decreased synchronously. Distal patterning gene hoxd12a exhibited premature expression and rapid decay, losing sustained late-phase expression. Moreover, transient elevation of gli3 during metamorphosis may contribute to restricted distal fin growth. We conclude that pectoral fin degeneration in C. semilaevis is associated with heterochronic disruption of developmental signaling and extensive tissue remodeling. This study provides transcriptomic insights into pectoral fin degeneration in tongue soles and establishes a basis for future functional studies of appendage reduction in teleosts.

Organizational bullying among nursing faculty: A systematic review of consequences, contributing factors, and interventions.

BACKGROUND: Organizational bullying among nursing faculty is a systemic and pervasive issue with profound psychological, professional, and institutional consequences. Despite increasing awareness, the literature remains fragmented, and a comprehensive synthesis is lacking. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and examined empirical studies on organizational bullying among nursing faculty, with no date restrictions applied. A structured search across five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Embase) identified studies that met inclusion criteria related to the consequences, contributing factors, and interventions. The Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) was used to assess study quality. RESULTS: Fifteen studies meeting the quality threshold were included. Organizational bullying was consistently associated with psychological distress (e.g., anxiety, depression, burnout, suicidal ideation), professional disengagement, and intent to leave. Contributing factors were categorized into structural and organizational (e.g., hierarchical power imbalances, toxic workplace culture), managerial and HR-related (e.g., lack of leadership support, poor reporting mechanisms), and individual/social (e.g., gender or ethnic discrimination, early-career vulnerability). Intervention strategies identified included policy reforms, leadership training, supportive reporting systems, and psychological support services, though evidence on their effectiveness remains limited. CONCLUSIONS: Organizational bullying in nursing academia is a serious and multifaceted challenge with detrimental effects on individuals and institutions. Addressing it requires a comprehensive, evidence-based approach that includes structural reforms, leadership development, and psychosocial support systems. Academic institutions must prioritize the creation of safe, inclusive, and respectful environments to retain faculty and sustain the quality of nursing education.
