[The sensitive nerve endings of the clitoris of the sow (Sus scrofa domesticus)].

Neural receptors of the porcine clitoris were examined using light and electron microscopy. Perfusion with ink allowed study of the unique vascular arrangement associated with the genital corpuscles. Sensory nerve-endings were generally rounded and formed a morphologically and structurally characteristic unit. They were composed of a network of primarily non-myelinated nerve fibers and flat cells. Between these structures, isolated small blood vessels were embedded amongst collagen fibers and amorphous material. An external capsule of variable thickness always surrounded the structures. A complex arrangement of vessels in the center of the capsule was formed by a subpapillary mesh. The same arrangement was seen in the morphologically comparable penile genital corpuscles of the same species. Based on the particular arrangement of blood vessels and nerve fibers in the genital corpuscles, some authors postulate the presence of a neuro-vascular glomerulus.

Priapism of the clitoris.

Priapism of the clitoris is a rare entity. A case of painful priapism is reported in a patient who had previously suffered a radical cystectomy for bladder carcinoma pT3-GIII, followed by local recurrence in the pelvis. From a symptomatic point of view she showed a good response to conservative treatment (analgesics and anxiolytics), as she refused surgical treatment. She survived 6 months from the recurrence, and died with lung metastases. The priapism did not recur. The physiopathological mechanisms involved in the process are discussed and the literature reviewed.

[Reconstruction of the female urethra using the roots of the clitoris. Eleven cases (author's transl)].

In 10 cases of obstetric and surgical necrosis of the urethra and in one of congenital aplasia, the canal was reconstructed using as an intermediate layer the roots of the clitoris, freed and applied. In the ten cases in which treatment has been completed, continence was restored in 8, either with one operation only (3 cases), or with the addition of various procedures for suspension of the bladder neck using autografts (5 cases).

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the clitoris in an elderly patient: report of a case.

Malignant rhabdoid tumors of the vulva are rare neoplasms which most of the time show aggressive behavior and a dismal prognosis. We report a case of malignant rhabdoid tumor of the clitoris occurring in an elderly patient. Due to the similarities that these neoplasms show with other low-differentiated tumors, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural assessment should always be conducted so that accurate diagnosis is achieved. Individualized extensive surgical treatment might decrease relapsing disease.

Epidermal inclusion cysts of the clitoris as a complication of female circumcision and pharaonic infibulation.

Female circumcision and pharaonic infibulation is still performed on young females in many parts of the world. It is estimated that two thousand young women living in Britain undergo this ritual every year. The most common complication of this procedure is epidermal inclusion cysts within the infibulation cicatrix. We report the clinical and pathological findings in 10 cases of clitorial inclusion cysts seen at the North West Armed Forbes Hospital, Tabuk, Saudi Arabia between 1989 and 1993. The clinical diagnosis in six cases was that of "clitoral tumor". Two patients presented with complaints of localized pain, one patient presented with dyspareunia and one patient presented with the complaint of a sporadic discharge of white fluid from the circumcision scar. The pathological findings were those of an implantation dermoid in all cases except in two patients where cysts had ruptured and had become inflamed and/or infected. Four cysts were multilocular.

[Histological structure of the peniform clitoris in congenital adrenogenital syndrome].

Peniform clitoris in 50 girls suffering from congenital adrenogenital syndrome were subtotally removed at the age of 4-6 years and studied by biopsy. A corpus spongiosum more or less developed was found in all cases beneath the corpora cavernosa in the bottom part of corpus clitoridis, epithelial urethral rudiments represented by single or multiple short tubules with transitional epithelium and mucinous glands were found in 46 cases; they were localized in corpus spongiosum or close to it in loose connective tissue. Other urethral rudiments occurring in glans clitoridis were represented by long slight pegs of squamous epithelium extending into corpus spongiosum glandis. Control samples from 20 4-6-year-old girls who had deceased from tumours showed but once heterotopic epithelial urethral rudiments-tubules with transitional epithelium and mucinous glands.

[Is involvement of the clitoris in epidermoid carcinoma of the vulva an adverse prognostic sign?].

Retrospective evaluation of 360 patients with vulvar cancer during the period from 1975 to 1994. From this group in 215 patients radical vulvectomy with bilateral inguinal lymph node extirpation was performed. After excluding 35 patients in the IVth stage of the disease, 11 with vulvar melanoma and 9 who did not attend in the group of the remaining 160 cases 3- 5- and 10-year survival rates were evaluated. Forty of the cancers clitoris of these 160 cases do not confirm that this localisation is a bad prognostic factor.

Epidermal cyst of the clitoris: a rare cause of clitorimegaly.

Epidermal cysts are slowly growing, intradermal or subcutaneous tumors with a wall composed of true epidermis. They occur most commonly on the face, scalp, neck, and trunk. We report the unusual case of a 16-year-old girl with an epidermal cyst of the clitoris. The tumor was removed by local excision.

Malignant schwannoma of the clitoris in a 1-year-old child.

A 1-year-old infant with von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis was seen because of increasing clitoral enlargement over a 7-month period. The mother, who also had neurofibromatosis, was treated 2 years beforehand for an acoustic neuroma. The child was treated by radical clitorectomy. Pathologic examination revealed malignant schwannoma, a tumor not previously described in this site. Vincristine, dactinomycin, and cyclophosphamide chemotherapy was given for 2 years to prevent local recurrence and metastatic spread. The child remains tumor free 2.5 years after diagnosis.
