Handedness and hobby preference.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between handedness and hobby preference in healthy individuals. For this reason, the Annett handedness questionnaire and a standard questionnaire on preference for hobbies were administered to 879 healthy young men (age, M = 22.3, SD = 4.8 yr.). Analysis showed more cultured individuals were much less likely to be strongly right-handed. Especially, pure right-handedness highly overrepresented among those who mainly preferred doing sports, pure left-handedness among those who preferred reading books, collecting, or going to the cinema/theater, and mixed-handedness among those who preferred arts, like playing music, drawing, or handicraft. The findings support evidence that handedness is associated with hobby preference.

Medical books: for information or learning? Reflections on the books of three Newfoundland physicians, c.1860 to c.1970.

This study describes the medical books of three physicians in rural Newfoundland who followed each other chronologically. Spanning the years c.1860 to c.1970, the nearly 300 books prompt a variety of questions about the physicians themselves, their practices, and their reading habits. These enquiries raise further questions about the extent to which medical books are read for factual information or for contemplating more general issues about the nature of disease and the nature of the individual.

[Kaspar Schwenckfeldt--a Silesian physician, Renaissance student of nature, and bibliophile].

Kaspar Schwenckfeldt (1563-1609) is numbered among the intellectual celebrities of the Age of Renaissance in Silesia. He was the first to describe the flora of this region. His work Stirpium et fossilium Silesiae catalogus, based on his own research, was the fundamental source of knowledge about those plants for almost two centuries. His work on Silesian mineralogy, Fossilium Silesiae catalogus, omnia generis mineralia, metalla, succos, terrae, lapillos, fontes medicatos et thermae continens, even at present day is a valuable source of information on the occurrence of minerals in Silesia in the distant past. On the basis of Theriothropeum Silesiae one can reconstruct the rich realm of Silesian fauna of 16th/17th centuries. The monography of cieplice Slaskie, Hirschbergischen warmen Bades, published in 1607, is one of the oldest descriptions of this spa. The analysis of the physical-chemical characteristics of the waters and the information about their possible medical application was the fullest expert's opinion of that time. Up to the present days, a hand-written register of his collection of books has been preserved in the Stadtarchiv in Görlitz. It contains 705 items, which include medical publications, works on magic and occultism, as well as books connected with the Reformation movement, studies in Old Greek and Latin philologies, books on the history of some European countries. His versatility and rich scientific output place him among the most outstanding minds of his age.

[Ink and bytes].

Paper journals--and books--will continue to exist, despite the digital revolution. Electronic media are superior for storage and retrieval of information, but far less so for intellectual digestion. The Dutch Journal of Medicine is proud of its recently completed electronic archive, in the form of digital images (1857-1985) and full text (from 1986 onwards). At the same time the Journal's supporting Society cherishes a valuable book collection, with some 700 titles before the year 1800 alone. Recently, a curator and a professional librarian were appointed. Part of the Society's assets have been transferred to a special fund for the support of projects on the borderline between medicine and other disciplines, such as history, philosophy, sociology and art.

[Sir Geoffrey Keynes 1887-1982. Surgical pioneer, medical historian, humanist].

Sir Geoffrey Keynes (1887 - 1982), was a pioneer in the surgery of breast cancer and thymic deseases, n.b. in patients suffering from myastenia gravis. He strongly disapproved of the longstanding dogma of so called radical mastectomy in breast cancer, and advocated a more limited surgical approach, followed by radiation therapy. This was done more than fifty years before breastconserving surgery has become the therapy of choice and against considerable opposition from the surgical establishment of his days. He also became a pioneer in the surgical treatment of myastenia gravis by thymectomy, at a time when there was no real understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease and when considerable controversy existed as to the importance or non importance of concomitant tumour formation in the thymus. Besides being a busy surgeon Sir Geoffrey was a medical historian, writing the biography of among others William Harvey, a bibliographer with a special interest in the poet and artist William Blake and a bibliophil with a large book collection of great value to medical history.

A regional cooperative acquisition program for monographs.

A cooperative acquisition program for monographs for the twelve resource libraries in Region IX of the Regional Medical Library Network is described. Each of the participating libraries has agreed to purchase all books of an assigned publisher which fall within a prescribed subject-format profile. It is hoped that this will help to reduce unnecessary duplication and contribute toward the development of resources in the region.
