Development of methodologic tools for planning and managing library services. IV. Bibliography of studies selected for methods and data useful to biomedical libraries.

This selective bibliography is intended to serve as a guide to empirical studies reporting data and methods that can be used by medical librarians to assess their own efforts objectively and to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of services they offer. The decision rules that governed selection of items for the bibliography are specified in detail. A total of 178 items published between 1915 and mid-1968 met the selection criteria. The list of items is supplemented by a keyword index derived from titles. Half the items are journal articles; a third of these articles appeared in the Bulletin, and most of the remainder in thirteen other library and information science journals. Most of the non-journal items are technical reports issued by the organization that conducted or sponsored the work. The characteristics of this literature suggest that few medical libraries, unless they are part of a university system that includes the collection of a library or information science school, are likely to have quick access to the literature base needed to support a comprehensive program of self-evaluation studies and the continuing education of their own staff. Regional medical libraries might well undertake to ensure both ready access to, and awareness of, literature on the scientific aspects of librarianship.

An evaluation of MEDLARS output: demand and recurring bibliographies.

The cooperation between the National Library of Medicine and various agencies of government and professional societies is producing a number of useful tools in the recurring bibliographies. Because the MEDLARS system is still in a state of flux, the demand bibliographies are slow in reaching the patron, but the results have been satisfactory.

The role of annotated bibliographies in information dissemination.

In July 1982, a comprehensive questionnaire was sent to a random sample of names on the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC) mailing list to measure user satisfaction with and use of annotated bibliographies about diabetes topics. The bibliographies are used to learn more about a topic and to locate cited materials. The total number of publications ordered by this sample is 8,857; therefore, an extrapolation from these data suggests that more than 45,000 publications were ordered as a direct result of the citations as the source of information.

Scanning electron microscopy of brain ventricular surfaces: a bibliography.

This bibliography is designed to facilitate the rapid identification and location of references concerning the application of scanning electron microscopy to investigations of the cerebroventricular system and related cerebrospinal fluid contacting surfaces. Because SEM provides information regarding cell surfaces, it is admirably suited to the examination of the brain ventricular system since the morphology of the CSF interface is of the utmost importance in accomplishing the diverse functions of the ependyma and associated circumventricular organs. The bibliography attests to the fact that scanning electron microscopy has provided a major impetus to the study of the structure and function of the circumventricular organs, choroid plexuses and tanycytic ependyma as well as the distribution and morphology of such supraependymal cellular elements as macrophages, neurons, and neuronal proceses. Furthermore, not only are SEM methodologies being applied to an ever lengthening list of phyla and species, but the diversity of problems amenable to the profitable application of scanning electron microscopy also is rapidly increasing. Investigations to date, for example, include studies of ventricular morphology during development and maturity, health and disease, and prior to as well as following experimental manipulation. While remarkable strides have been made toward a greater understanding of many aspects of cerebroventricula structrure and function, many significant problems clearly await the judicious application of scanning electron microscopy.

Scanning electron microscopy of central nervous system cerebrospinal-fluid-contacting surfaces: a bibliography (1963-1995).

This bibliography is compiled to assist in locating papers related to the application of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to cerebrospinal-fluid-contacting surfaces in vertebrates. The use of SEM by neuroscientists has continued apace since the publication of the first bibliography in 1980. SEM studies now include more than 50 species of vertebrates and range from cyclostomes to humans; they encompass development from embryo to senescence and concern both normal and pathologic morphology. Although remarkable strides have been made toward a greater understanding of many aspects of the structure and function of cerebrospinal-fluid-contacting surfaces, many significant problems await the judicious application of scanning electron microscopy.

On teaching bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to medical students: an annotated bibliography of audiovisual materials.

OBJECTIVE: The teaching of procedures that involve risk of pain or morbidity deserves special care. The author set out to develop a teaching program for medical students to ensure quality control of bedside diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. DESIGN: A bibliography of available videotapes and related audiovisual teaching materials on 15 common bedside procedures was assembled following requests for materials from all U.S. medical schools. Audiovisual materials from nine institutions were reviewed. SETTING: Medical schools and teaching institutions. PARTICIPANTS: Medical schools and libraries. MAIN RESULTS: Seventy-three percent (24/33) of responding schools had no visual material on the procedures. There was ten times more material on physical diagnosis than on bedside procedures. About 20 videotapes were reviewed in an annotated bibliography. Some videos contained valuable insights on how to make good teaching materials. A set of criteria for quality videotapes is listed. CONCLUSIONS: Considerable work needs to be done to develop audiovisual materials and curricula for teaching bedside procedures. Videotape is a valuable medium for introducing procedures and ensuring uniformity of technique. After reviewing all available videotapes, the author decided that videotapes should be the initial part of a multidimensional program for teaching procedures.

The economics of inequality in health: a bibliography.

Economists have until recently taken a back-seat in the debate on inequality and health, despite various suggestions that economic science has much to contribute to the clarification of issues surrounding that polemic. This article presents a bibliography of English-language sources which explicitly consider the economics of inequality in the health domain or present methods which might suitably inform the debate. Initially, an introductory guide to the literature is presented, followed by the bibliography itself. This second section is divided into four distinct parts in order to facilitate use: works of a general economic nature, including those on the measurement and extent of inequality; discussions of normative aspects of equity in health; positive analyses drawing on models of the demand for health and medical care; and a final sub-section that groups works from other disciplines which are indispensable background for future work by economists.

An annotated bibliography for ethics training in consultation-liaison psychiatry.

The expanding field of bioethics has created a need in psychiatry for rapid access to the complex bioethics literature. This is especially true in consultation-liaison work. An annotated bibliography was created by a task force of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine charged with exploring how psychiatrists function on bioethics committees. The bibliography is organized into headings that reflect how bioethical problems came to the attention of psychiatrists. Introductory references allow the reader an overview of the history of bioethics and a selection of useful textbooks. References are provided explaining how ethical principles are used. References are also organized by areas of medical work frequently visited by consultation-liaison psychiatrists.

A bibliography of cost-effectiveness practices in physical medicine and rehabilitation: AAPM&R white paper.

Cost-effectiveness studies attempt to determine the ratio of costs to outcomes of a particular intervention or treatment and to compare a standard intervention with an alternative intervention to determine if the alternative is more cost effective. The goal is to establish priorities for the resources allocation and to decide among alternative interventions for the same medical condition. The global process of rehabilitation does not usually lend itself to cost-effective analysis (due to the complex set of treatments provided) but rather to specific interventions and specific aspects of outcome. The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has published a cost effectiveness annotated bibliography on the Internet (http://www.aapmr.org/memphys/cebfinala.htm) that identifies 132 studies in the literature that meet specified criteria and are related to the field of rehabilitation. This White Paper attempts to interpret and synthesize the studies in that bibliography that relate to stroke, spinal cord injury (SCI), orthopedic conditions, pain syndromes, amputations, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Most studies support the cost effectiveness of care for stroke and SCI in dedicated units or centers rather than in a general medical unit. Studies also support back programs and revascularization procedures in limb ischemia. Studies in TBI underscore the significant financial resources for the care of these patients as well as the potential benefit from rehabilitation services even in the most severely injured. Further high quality research in this area is needed.
