Teaching psychiatry in a new medical school: a multimedia approach.

As a developing department in a new medical school, we were able to improve our curriculum by using a multimedia approach to teaching psychiatry. We relied heavily on a programmed self-instructional text with videotaped clinical examples (PLS), learning objectives, formal classroom presentations, small group discussions, self-assessment exercises, an affective approach to the patient-doctor relationship using role-playing and videotaped patient vignettes, and finally live patient interviews. We believe we have been able to present the widely agreed upon content in the basic science years, using a wide variety of teaching materials and technics which maintain the interest of most students.

Improved perinatal knowledge in community hospitals through a self-instructional program.

The Perinatal Continuing Education Program (PCEP) was conducted throughout South Carolina. The program was well received and greatly valued; however, participants requested more information covering obstetrics. To meet this need, we developed the Perinatal Education Program for Community Hospitals (PEPCH), patterned after and similar to PCEP, and tested it in South Carolina and southern California. In the South Carolina trial, the posttest was found reliable (Kuder-Richardson index = .77). In the California trial, the pretest/posttest reliability was confirmed. Learning for nurses was documented (pretest = 30.8 +/- 5.3, posttest = 36.8 +/- 5.5, P less than .001). Completion rate for this voluntary program was 84%. We conclude that a self-study program based in the community hospital can improve knowledge of perinatal professionals.

A comparison of three teaching methods on learning and retention.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the teaching method used with cognitive learning and learning retention outcomes of nurses when instructed in Imogene King's Theory of Goal Attainment. This study's quantitative, quasi-experimental design examined relationships and/or differences between variables or groups. Cognitive learning and learning retention outcomes were measured by pre-, post- and 1-week posttests. Statistically significant learning took place in all three methods. However, no statistically significant difference was found between teaching method used and cognitive learning or retention. The information gained from this study may provide a stepping stone for enhanced education in the orientation phase of employment, and will provide the impetus for further study.

An innovative interdisciplinary approach to self-directed learning with a focus on the continuum of patient care.

Current regulatory review standards emphasize the hospital's role in providing continuum of care. Today, patient care staff must know more about the "continuum of care" concept so they can help patients more fully understand their treatment and take an active role in their own care. One of the challenges is finding creative and effective ways to get the message across to everyone on the staff. This article describes one approach to self-directed learning that takes into consideration individual learning styles and level of proficiency with a focus on the continuum of patient care.
