Results of treatment of patients with acute pulmonary abscess, acute empyema of the pleura and pyopneumothorax were analyzed. The local treatment of the main group of patients consisting of 50 persons included oxitocin in combination with antiseptics and antibiotics which facilitated maximal reduction of the persistent potential of the pathogenic agent, its rapid elimination from the purulent focus and allowed to get better results using conservative therapy. The obtained clinical effect confirmed the experimental data on pronounced inhibition of persistent properties of the bacterial pathogens with the complexes "antibiotic-oxitocin".
The effects of algin-based drugs--algipor, algimaf, teralgim--on the course of maxillofacial purulent wounds healing were under study. Cytologic and morphometric data and findings of pH measurements evidence a high efficacy of teralgim and of algipor and algimaf combinations with trypsin immobilized on a cloth base during the first phase of the wound process. Application of these drugs was conducive to a sooner wound purification and to stimulation of the reparative processes.

Experimental and clinical studies of the efficacy of preoperative treatment of the conjunctival cavity with low-frequency ultrasound were carried out. Ultrasound parameters employed were as follows: 20-70 kHz frequency, 25-35 microns oscillation amplitude, length of exposure 60-120 sec. Such treatment was found to reduce bacterial contamination of the conjunctival cavity. Clinical studies were carried out on 20 eyes of 14 patients operated on for cataracts and glaucomas at the department for ocular diseases of the Moscow municipal clinical hospital No. 15. Low-frequency ultrasound treatment of the conjunctival cavity was carried out before surgery in all these patients. In the reference patients (n = 15, 15 eyes) the conjunctival cavity was washed with 1:5000 furacilin solution and 30% sodium sulfacil solution or kanamycin solution (10,000 U in 1 ml) on the operation table. The bacterial contamination of the conjunctival cavity prior to surgery in 24 eyes has made up 84.1 bacterial colonies per Petri dish on an average. Preoperative treatment of the conjunctival cavity with low-frequency ultrasound has reduced the bacterial contamination to 6.3 colonies per Petri dish, i.e. by 13.3 times.
Ultrasonic examination of the suture site on the uterus was carried out in 7-10 days following a cesarean section in 73 women. Several types of characteristic echograms were distinguished, evidencing the adequacy of the reparative processes at the site of suture on the uterus. The authors find the double-contrast echoscopic examination of the postoperative uterus highly effective, and much more informative than common ultrasonic examination. Synthetic suture material is recommended.

Intrabony periodontal lesions of three minipigs received surgical debridement followed by site implantation of synthetic and phycogenic hydroxylapatite graft material. Histologic examination of the sites treated with Algipore showed limited ossification of these implants. Lesions treated with the phycogenic material showed increased ossification of the implant pores and the implant periphery. These results suggest that Algipore has no clinical indication, while the phycogenic material could have a limited indication in intrabony periodontal lesions.
By means of biophotometry the coefficients of absorption and penetration depth of helium-neon laser radiation with a wavelength of 632.8 nm were measured. Measurements were made in the inflammatory mucous membrane of the tympanic cavity, mucous membrane of the tympanic-cavity infiltrated with the saline solution, cortical bone of the mastoid, cartilage of the auricle, blood, serum, exudate, 0.02% furacillin, 3% boric acid, 0.9% and 10% NaCl. These observations were used to develop an efficient method of laser therapy of the inflammatory and wound surface of the middle ear biological tissue, which formed the basis of a new procedure of the laser treatment of "closed" cavities of the middle ear in an early postoperative period after debridement or hearing repair surgery of suppurative otitis media which were filled with a transparent antiseptic solution.

The results of treatment of 32 patients with diffuse forms of purulent peritonitis are analyzed. Prolonged laparoscopic sanitation of the peritoneal cavity, combined with He-Ne laser irradiation of the peritoneum and parenchymatous organs, were effectively used in the complex of therapeutic measures. For immunity stimulation intravascular laser irradiation of the blood was carried out. The terms of normalization of local inflammatory shifts in the peritoneum shortened and the number of lethal outcomes decreased. Prospects for the use of this method are outlined.
