In villages with endemic nephropathy (EN) high incidence and mortality rates of some urinary system tumors are reported. Age-adjusted incidences of renal pelvic and ureteral neoplasms were 46/10(5) in females and 27/10(5) in males; for urinary bladder tumors these figures were 16/10(5) and 35/10(5). The frequency of parenchymal kidney tumors was similar to that reported for the country as a whole. An increased relative risk of developing urinary system tumors was observed in patients with EN and with advancing age (only in women). Smoking did not relate to the occurrence of these neoplasms. No tumors of the urinary system were found in the investigated farm and domestic animals from the endemic region.

Neglect of the representational space has been shown in 8 patients asked to evoke mentally the map of France and to name as many towns as possible successively on each side of a vertical axis splitting the map in two equivalent halves. They had first to imagine the map with an axis in the south-north direction and then with an axis in the reverse direction (north-south). The results were similar to those reported by Bisiach and Luzzatti (1979). They reflect a disturbance of the mechanisms involved in conscious representation of space. In addition we report on the effects of vestibular stimulation on the reversibility of representational neglect in 3 patients. These preliminary results provide support for the idea that vestibular stimulation would play centrally by restoring the symmetry of the internal representation of egocentric space.

Certain properties of the map as a model are briefly examined. Use of the cartographic model in hygiene largely depends on space characteristics of the events and processes being studied. Hygiene as a science introduces into the map new, specific contents and a methodology that includes analysis and evaluation of mapped processes and events from the viewpoint of their impact upon people's health. Based on the events and processes imaged, a concise classification of maps used in hygiene is given.

IN ORDER TO demonstrate the dire effects that contagious epidemic diseases were having on the population of Washington DC, Public Health Officers of the District of Columbia used epidemiological maps in their annual reports to city commissioners from 1878 until 1909. These maps charted information graphically that was included as statistical tables elsewhere in the reports. Their evolution occurred during a period when the Health Officers themselves were coming to grips with the causes of diseases that included diphtheria, scarlet fever, typhoid and malarial fevers, smallpox, consumption (tuberculosis), and diarrheal diseases. The maps may have encouraged laws that were passed during this period which required Washington DC physicians to report cases and deaths from these diseases.
The author has studied the spread of the Balkan endemic nephropathy (BEN) according to the dispensary, clinical and post mortem data in the district of Vartza and established that the disease is met in 41 settlements of the district with a total population of 47,589. The average morbidity rate in the endemic villages is 35.9% of the population. In three villages it is over 200% in five--over 100--200% and four from 50--100%, in 25--from 2--50% and only in four villages under 2%. The author has elaborated a medico-geographical map on the base of the number of the settlements where patients with BEN are to be found. As seen from the map, the disease is met in settlements situated at the foot of the Balkan and its foothills: Vratza region of the Balkan and Veslez. It is interesting to be pointed out that certain settlements free of the disease are to be found among the endemic villages. The disease affects the village population. In the towns of Vratza and Mesdra, though situated in the center of the endemic region, no BEN patients have been found among the local population.

This article briefly reviews the advantages of using separate geographies for census enumeration and output, and explains how a geographical information system is being used for the planning of enumeration districts for the 1997 Census Test. Experimental work is described which offers the potential to automatically create a new output geography, formed from aggregations of unit postcodes, and which offers control over output area population and boundaries.
