[Impact of groundwater resource temporal-spatial change in Minqin oasis on ecological security of irrigation region landscape].

By the GIS technology, this paper studied the impact of groundwater resource temporal-spatial change in the lake area of Minqin Oasis on the ecological security of irrigation region landscape. The results showed that the depth of groundwater was descending continuously, the velocity of groundwater line change in the center of irrigation region was faster than that in the edge region, and consequently, the area of the descending funnel of groundwater line was enlarged. From 1987 to 2001, the area with a groundwater depth deeper than 3 m was increased from 81.2% to 97.4%. The descending of groundwater line due to soil water reducing was the main reason that resulted in the destruction and deadness of forests. When the depth of groundwater was deeper than 8 m and soil water content was less than 12%, the die-back rate of tree was morn than 90%, and that of shrub was more than 50%. Impacted by the descend of groundwater depth, the area of forest land, shrub land and open-canopy land was decreased by 67%, 54% and 31%, and the number of their patches was decreased by 35, 42 and 50, respectively. The mineralization degree of groundwater in northern irrigation region increased obviously, and changed the safe pattern of crop growth. The benefit of agriculture decreased, and the adjustment of planting construction was restricted seriously, which became the main impact factor on the ecological security of irrigation region. Reasonably distributing water resource between upper and lower river basin, reducing unreasonable land use, decreasing farmland area, and constructing safety landscape pattern could lead to the balance between the exploitation and replenishment of groundwater resource, prevent the descend of groundwater depth and the increase of groundwater mineralization, and improve the ecological security of the irrigation region.

[Effects of intermittent irrigation on ecological and physiological water requirement of rice in north China].

The ecological and physiological water requirement of rice was studied in a paddy field of north China, and the field experiment was conducted at Shenyang Experimental Station of Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Under continuous flooding irrigation (CSF) and intermittent irrigation (IT) conditions, the evapotranspiration and soil evaporation of paddy fields were measured by non-weighing lysimeters and micro-lysimeters, respectively. The results showed that compared with continuous flooding irrigation, the transpiration under intermittent irrigation condition was not significantly reduced, but 16% and 24% of water amounts were reduced by decreasing the water losses through soil water evaporation and percolation, respectively. The water use efficiency of intermittent irrigation was increased 10%, without any adverse effects on biomass and grain yield of rice. Although the amount of water requirement under IT treatment was reduced significantly compared with CSF treatment, about 60% of total water requirement was still lost through deep percolation. Based on the results obtained, the corresponding countermeasures to reduce the amounts of soil water evaporation and percolation and to increase the water use efficiency were put forward in this paper.

Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) to save water and improve Sauvignon Blanc quality?

With a fast change of land use in Marlborough from extensive pastoral farming to intensive irrigated viticulture, a need has risen to investigate the sustainable use of the available water. In 2001 a 5 ha irrigation research project was installed in a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc vineyard. Irrigation treatments installed were control (compensate 100% for crop evapotranspiration (ET(O)), 80%, 70% and 60% of ET(O). During the two years that the Regulated Deficit Irrigation (RDI) trial has run so far, very different climatic conditions created much greater differences in yield and vegetative growth, than up to 40% reduction in irrigation, none of which were significant. The use of sap flow in the vines has been fine-tuned and is now giving reliable results on which to base vine water need.

Effect of different irrigation methods on yield of red hot pepper and plant mortality caused by Phytophthora capsici Leon.

This experiment was conducted in 1999 and 2000 in a field naturally infected by Phytophthora capsici to determine the effects of different irrigation methods, namely, basin (B), closed-end furrow (F), drip (D) and sprinkler (S) irrigation on dry yield of chili pepper (Capsium annuum L. K. Maras Type). Water use efficiency (WUE) and plant mortality were also measured. The averages of total applied water to the B, F, D and S plots for the two years were 937.7 mm, 920.6 mm, 886.5 and 913.4 mm, respectively. Thus, the mean seasonal water use by pepper varied from 1020.7 to 1109.7 mm. The highest water use was measured in B, followed by use for S, D and F methods. The highest mean potential dry yield with 1.58 t ha(-1) was obtained using D method. This was followed by S (1.36 t ha(-1)), B (1.13 t ha(-1)), and F (0.81 t ha(-1)) methods. In terms of plant mortality, crops having B irrigation had the highest (93.9%), followed by lessen amount to the S (3.2%), F (3.1%), and D methods (1.7%). Only the B irrigation method stimulated the development of P. capsici disease. On the other hand, mean WUEs varied between 0.7 and 1.7 kg ha(-1)mnm(-1) for Irrigation methods. WUE for D method was slightly higher than S method, but considerably higher than B and F methods.

Effects of sprinkle irrigation on the occurrence and abundance of Psorophora columbiae eggs in ricelands.

Low-pressure sprinkler irrigation was investigated as to its potential influence on the frequency of occurrence and relative abundance of Psorophora columbiae eggs in Texas ricelands. Analysis of egg sampling data collected from soybean, rice and sorghum field sites subjected to either sprinkle or flood irrigation practices during 1982-83 indicated no significant differences in either the frequency of occurrence or relative abundance of Ps. columbiae eggs in the various sites. Data collected during 1984 indicate that the amount of water applied to a field by a sprinkler system will have some influence on the numbers of Ps. columbiae eggs occurring in the field. The frequency of occurrence and relative abundance of Ps. columbiae eggs occurring in field sites sprinkle-irrigated at full-pan evaporation rates (i.e., all moisture in the soil lost to evaporation was replenished via irrigation) were significantly higher than was the case in the sites irrigated at half-pan and quarter-pan rates.

A bacteriological and helminthological investigation of a sewage-irrigated area in a Beijing suburb.

The municipal sewage and raw sludge removed from a sewage treatment plant were the main sources of pollution by pathogenic bacteria and helminthic eggs in land utilization. The level of pollution in the sewage-irrigated areas was as high as that in the areas using fresh night soil. The survival time of Salmonella and Ascaris ova in soil irrigated with sewage was relatively long. The soil had a definite natural capacity for purifying pathogenic bacteria. Because of the different ways of watering, the number of Salmonella detected on vegetables irrigated with sewage was higher than that on vegetables manured with night soil, whereas the reverse held for the number of Ascaris ova. The differences in latent Salmonella infection and the geometric mean titer of serum agglutination for typhoid between the vegetable growers living in the sewage-irrigated area and those living in fresh night soil areas were not remarkable. The prevalence of soil-transmitted ascaridiasis among vegetable growers in sewage-irrigated areas was slightly lower than that among growers in fecal-contaminated areas. When the number of fecal coliforms in sewage was no greater than 10(4)/liter and no less than 85% of Ascaris ova could be removed by sewage treatment, the number of Salmonella and Ascaris ova detected decreased noticeably.

Absence of residues from crops irrigated with water treated with trifenmorph for schistosomiasis control.

The fate of the molluscicide trifenmorph (N-tritylmorpholine) following its use in irrigation systems to control the intermediate hosts of schistosomes was studied by laboratory and field experiments. Laboratory studies with (14)C-trifenmorph indicated that bean plants did not take up detectable residues when the soil in which they were grown was irrigated with water containing trifenmorph in concentrations likely to occur in the field. These laboratory studies have been complemented by field irrigation studies of growing crops in southern Africa and the Sudan. Residues of trifenmorph and its breakdown product triphenylmethanol could not be detected in the crops and the limit of detectability was 0.01-0.02 ppm. These results indicate that residues are not likely to be present in irrigated crops following the treatment of the irrigation water systems with trifenmorph.

Chemical preparation of the eye in ophthalmic surgery. I. Effect of conjunctival irrigation.

We investigated the effect on bacterial flora of conjunctival irrigation as part of the chemical preparation of the eye before surgery. Forty consecutive patients underwent conjunctival irrigation with a saline solution in one randomly selected eye. Aerobic and anaerobic bacterial conjunctival cultures were taken in masked fashion before and after the preparation. In nonirrigated eyes, the colony counts before and after the preparation were virtually identical; the species count increased 23%. In irrigated eyes, the colony count increased 18% and the species count increased 46%. The increase in the species count was significant. Our findings suggest irrigation with a saline solution does not reduce the bacterial flora of the conjunctiva.

Irrigation management of sigmoid colostomy.

Questionnaires were sent to 270 patients who had undergone abdominoperineal resection and sigmoid colostomy at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn, during the ten years from 1972 to 1982; 223 patients returned their questionnaires with evaluable data. Sixty percent of the patients were continent with irrigation, and 22% were incontinent with irrigation. Eighteen percent had discontinued irrigation for various reasons. The proportion continent was higher in women, younger patients, and previously constipated patients. A poorly constructed colostomy may cause acute angle, parastoma hernia, stomal prolapse, or stenosis and thus be the cause of failure of irrigation.

Gravlee jet irrigator. Efficacy in diagnosis of endometrial neoplasia.

The Gravlee jet irrigator was used in 556 women with abnormal uterine bleeding. The irrigator failed to demonstrated endometrial adenocarcinoma in 14 of 25 patients. In ten of these 14, the specimens were found to be unsatisfactory. Twenty-six percent (16 of 61) of those patients with unsatisfactory specimens had a proliferative endometrial lesion. The false-negative rate in diagnosing endometrial cancer with an adequate specimen was 27% (4 of 15). Forty-eight of 61 cases of hyperplastic endometrial lesions were not diagnosed by means of jet irrigation. The irrigation failed to detect premalignant endometrial lesions and was not sufficiently reliable to exclude endometrial carcinoma when a satisfactory negative specimen was obtained.

Influence of irrigation solutions on oscillating bone saw blade performance.

The influence of irrigation on bone cutting was determined by measuring the biomechanical performance of a bone cutting saw during irrigation with various solutions. Solutions of 0.9% saline and 10, 20, and 30% poloxamer-188 were used as the irrigant. A 10% solution of poloxamer-188 was judged to be the superior irrigant because it successfully maintained bone temperature at a controlled level without interfering with the rate of bone removal.

Whole gut irrigation: a survey of patient opinion.

Patients' assessment of whole gut irrigation via a nasogastric tube has been obtained by a questionnaire answered by 79 of 99 patients who received this method of bowel preparation before operation on the large bowel or colonoscopy. Abdominal pain during the irrigation was experienced by 13 patients (17 per cent) and nausea and vomiting occurred in 24 (30 per cent). Intubation with a nasogastric tube and the discomfort of prolonged sitting on a commode were considered the most disagreeable aspects of the procedure. Fifty-six patients (71 per cent) would have agreed to the irrigation being repeated if necessary and many patients preferred whole gut irrigation to previous 'orthodox' bowel preparations that they had experienced.

A controlled trial of colostomy management by natural evacuation, irrigation and foam enema.

Twenty patients entered a prospective controlled trial of colostomy management by three techniques--natural evacuation, colostomy irrigation and foam enema. Every patient spent 2 months using each technique. The mean number of colostomy actions weekly was 17 during natural evacuation, 6 during irrigation and 10 with the enema. There was no significant difference in the time taken to manage the colostomy by each technique. Eighteen patients considered that both irrigation and the foam enema improved the quality of their life, and opted to continue with irrigation on completion of the study. There were no major complications during the trial but leakage of foam and an increase in flatus were problems with the foam enema. It is concluded that patients should be made aware of the alternative methods available for colostomy management and be encouraged to use the method of their choice.

Detection of hepatitis C virus RNA in the ultrasonic dissector irrigating solution used in liver surgery.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA was detected in the irrigating solution aspirated by the ultrasonic dissector system used in liver surgery with a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction technique and was then compared with HCV RNA in the serum to clarify the risk of viral transmission to hospital personnel. The positivity of HCV RNA in the aspirated irrigating solution was approximately equal in all patients whose serum was positive for HCV RNA. However, viral RNA was not detected in the aspirated irrigating solution of any patient who was seronegative for HCV RNA. These results indicate that it is necessary to be cautious regarding the transmission of HCV during liver surgery when using the ultrasonic dissector in HCV RNA seropositive patients, because the irrigating solution aspirated by this device appears to be highly infectious.

Effect of different infusion regimens on colonic motility and efficacy of colostomy irrigation.

The colonic motility response and short-term clinical effectiveness of colonic irrigation was studied in five patients with an end-colostomy, each of whom was studied on up to six occasions, using volumes of 500 and 1500 ml water infused under gravity and over a period of 2.5 and 5 min with a pump. The median baseline colonic luminal pressure was 14 cmH2O and rose to 42 cmH2O with a 500-ml infusion, and to 74 cmH2O with a 1500-ml infusion. Irrigation induced high-pressure (over 200 cmH2O) propagated waves which caused the efflux of colonic contents. These were more numerous after a 1500- than a 500-ml infusion (median 4.5 versus 2.0 respectively). There was no difference between the two volumes infused in the incidence of colostomy break-through before subsequent irrigation. Colostomy irrigation with 500-1500 ml water appears to produce intracolonic pressure rises that are safe. These volumes can be infused rapidly under gravity alone.

Comparison of the influence of intralumenal irrigation solutions on free flap survival.

Heparin is commonly included in the irrigation solution used during microvascular surgery. Evidence has accumulated to indicate a beneficial effect of heparin on anastomotic patency, implying that its topical use is critical to success even in routine microvascular repairs. This investigation compared heparin and urokinase as additives to the irrigation solution (Ringer's lactate) used during rat groin free flap replantation. A newly trained microsurgeon performed all surgical procedures to lower the possible success rate through microsurgical inexperience and, thus, to create a stronger challenge for the topical irrigant. Solutions were administered on a blinded, randomized basis. Vessel patency and flap survival were followed for 7 days. No statistically significant differences were found between any of the treatment groups: patency and survival rates of 67% for heparin, 57% for urokinase, and 73% for controls (vehicle only). The flap failures that occurred may have been attributable to undetected technical errors due to the microsurgical inexperience of the surgeon. In a separate series, an experienced microsurgeon achieved 93% success using vehicle without additives for irrigation. These results suggest that topical heparin or urokinase is not essential for achieving high levels of success during microvascular surgery.

Effects of intraocular perfusion with two alternating irrigation solutions on the simultaneously recorded electroretinogram of albino rabbits.

The direct current electroretinogram (DC-ERG) of 15 unilaterally vitrectomized albino rabbits was studied during continuous intraocular irrigation with a recently developed solution ('PHS') produced by Pharmacia Ophthalmics. The mean amplitudes of the b- and c-waves were somewhat lower than corresponding values of previously investigated reference subjects, but not statistically different. In 11 of the 15 rabbits PHS was then replaced by the commonly used balanced salt solution (BSS). The fluids were subsequently repeatedly alternated (PHS, BSS, PHS, BSS, PHS). During irrigation with BSS the average amplitude of the b-wave was reduced to 87% (p less than 0.02) and that of the c-wave to 63% (p less than 0.001) of the levels obtained during perfusion with PHS. In two rabbits the ERG was studied about one month after vitrectomy, where PHS-irrigation was used both during surgery and for 30 min after its completion. No marked differences were observed between the treated and the untreated eyes as to the b- and c-wave amplitudes at stable stages of the recording. Thus, judged by the ERG, retinal and pigment epithelial functions were influenced unfavorably by BSS, whereas they seemed to be well preserved with PHS. From this point of view PHS appears to be an excellent irrigation solution for vitreoretinal surgery that ought to be clinically tested.

Intraoperative irrigation and primary resection for obstructing lesions of the left colon.

The treatment of choice for left sided colonic obstruction is still controversial. We tried primary resection and anastomosis with the aid of intraoperative irrigation of the dilated proximal colon. Twenty-one cases of obstructive carcinoma of the left colon and four cases of sigmoid colon volvulus were managed using this approach. After the antegrade or retrograde intraoperative irrigation, primary resection and anastomosis without colostomy was performed in all 25 cases. There was only one case with anastomotic leakage. The satisfactory results of our present study and of the previous reports of intraoperative irrigation lead us to recommend intraoperative irrigation and primary anastomosis for left sided colonic obstruction except when the general condition of a patient is very poor or when the prognosis is expected to be poor due to the advanced spread of carcinoma.
