Quantum statistical calculations and symplectic corrector algorithms.

The quantum partition function at finite temperature requires computing the trace of the imaginary time propagator. For numerical and Monte Carlo calculations, the propagator is usually split into its kinetic and potential parts. A higher-order splitting will result in a higher-order convergent algorithm. At imaginary time, the kinetic energy propagator is usually the diffusion Green's function. Since diffusion cannot be simulated backward in time, the splitting must maintain the positivity of all intermediate time steps. However, since the trace is invariant under similarity transformations of the propagator, one can use this freedom to "correct" the split propagator to higher order. This use of similarity transforms classically gives rise to symplectic corrector algorithms. The split propagator is the symplectic kernel and the similarity transformation is the corrector. This work proves a generalization of the Sheng-Suzuki theorem: no positive time step propagators with only kinetic and potential operators can be corrected beyond second order. Second-order forward propagators can have fourth-order traces only with the inclusion of an additional commutator. We give detailed derivations of four forward correctable second-order propagators and their minimal correctors.

Generating function, path integral representation, and equivalence for stochastic exclusive particle systems.

We present the path integral representation of the generating function for classical exclusive particle systems. By introducing hard-core bosonic creation and annihilation operators and appropriate commutation relations, we construct the Fock space structure. Using the state vector, the generating function is defined and the master equation of the system is transformed into the equation for the generating function. Finally, the solution of the linear equation for the generating function is derived in the form of the path integral. Applying the formalism, the equivalence of reaction-diffusion processes of single species and two species is described.

Population size bias in descendant-weighted diffusion quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

We consider the influence of population size on the accuracy of diffusion quantum Monte Carlo simulations that employ descendant weighting or forward walking techniques to compute expectation values of observables that do not commute with the Hamiltonian. We show that for a simple model system, the d-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator, the population size must increase rapidly with d in order to ensure that the simulations produce accurate results. When the population size is too small, expectation values computed using descendant-weighted diffusion quantum Monte Carlo simulations exhibit significant systematic biases.

Consistent canonical quantization of general relativity in the space of vassiliev invariants

We present a quantization of the Hamiltonian and diffeomorphism constraint of canonical quantum gravity in the spin network representation. The novelty consists in considering a space of wave functions based on the Vassiliev invariants. The constraints are finite, well defined, and reproduce at the level of quantum commutators the Poisson algebra of constraints of the classical theory. A similar construction can be carried out in 2+1 dimensions leading to the correct quantum theory.

Scheme for total quantum teleportation

We address the issue of totally teleporting the quantum state of an external particle, as opposed to studies on partial teleportation of external single-particle states, total teleportation of coherent states and encoded single-particle states, and intramolecular teleportation of nuclear spin states. We find a set of commuting observables whose measurement directly projects onto the Bell basis and discuss a possible experiment, based on two-photon absorption, allowing, for the first time, total teleportation of the state of a single external photon through a direct projective measurement.

Noncommutative D-brane in a nonconstant NS-NS B field background.

We show that, when the field strength H of the NS-NS B field does not vanish, the coordinates x and momenta p of open string end points satisfy a set of mixed commutation relations among themselves. Identifying x and p with the coordinates and derivatives of the D-brane world volume, we find a new type of noncommutative space which is very different from those associated with a constant B field background.

Integrable model for interacting electrons in metallic grains.

We find an integrable generalization of the BCS model with nonuniform Coulomb and pairing interaction. The Hamiltonian is integrable by construction since it is a functional of commuting operators; these operators, which therefore are constants of motion of the model, contain the anisotropic Gaudin Hamiltonians. The exact solution is obtained diagonalizing them by means of Bethe ansatz. Uniform pairing and Coulomb interaction are obtained as the "isotropic limit" of the Gaudin Hamiltonians. We discuss possible applications of this model to a single grain and to a system of few interacting grains.

Noncommutative quantum cosmology.

We propose a model for noncommutative quantum cosmology by means of a deformation of minisuperspace. For the Kantowski-Sachs metric we are able to find the exact wave function. We construct wave packets and show that new quantum states that "compete" to be the most probable state appear, in clear contrast with the commutative case. A tunneling process could be possible among these states.

Wigner-Yanase skew information and uncertainty relations.

The Wigner-Araki-Yanase theorem puts a limitation on the measurement of observables in the presence of a conserved quantity, and the notion of Wigner-Yanase skew information quantifies the amount of information on the values of observables not commuting with the conserved quantity. We demonstrate that the statistical idea underlying the skew information is the Fisher information in the theory of statistical estimation. A quantum Cramér-Rao inequality and a new uncertainty relation in terms of the skew information are established, which shed considerable new light on the relationships between quantum measurement and statistical inference. The result is applied to estimating the evolution speed of quantum states.

Coherence stabilization of a two-qubit gate by ac fields.

We consider a CNOT gate operation under the influence of quantum bit-flip noise and demonstrate that ac fields can change the qubit Hamiltonian in such a way that it approximately commutes with the bath coupling. Then the noise effectively acts as phase noise which improves coherence up to several orders of magnitude while the gate operation time remains unchanged. Within a high-frequency approximation, both purity and fidelity of the gate operation are studied analytically. The numerical treatment with a Bloch-Redfield master equation confirms the analytical results.

Fermions without fermion fields.

It is shown that an arbitrary fermion hopping Hamiltonian can be mapped into a system with no fermion fields, generalizing an earlier model of Levin and Wen. All operators in the Hamiltonian of the resulting description commute (rather than anticommute) when acting at different sites, despite the system having excitations obeying Fermi statistics. While extra conserved degrees of freedom are introduced, they are all locally identified in the representation obtained. The same methods apply to Majorana (half) fermions, which for Cartesian lattices mitigate the fermion doubling problem. The generality of these results suggests that the observation of Fermion excitations in nature does not demand that anticommuting Fermion fields be fundamental.

Quantum-classical correspondence in response theory.

The correspondence principle between the quantum commutator [A, B] and the classical Poisson brackets iota h{A, B} is examined in the context of response theory. The classical response function is obtained as the leading term of the expansion of the phase space representation of the response function in terms of Weyl-Wigner transformations and is shown to increase without bound at long times as a result of ignoring divergent higher-order contributions. Systematical inclusion of higher-order contributions improves the accuracy of the h expansion at finite times. Resummation of all the higher-order terms establishes the classical-quantum correspondence <--> alpha n e iota n omega t|Jv + nh/2. The time interval of the validity of the simple classical limit [A(t), B(0)] --> iota h{A(t), B(0)} is estimated for quasiperiodic dynamics and is shown to be inversely proportional to anharmonicity.

Method to find quantum noiseless subsystems.

We develop a structure theory for decoherence-free subspaces and noiseless subsystems that applies to arbitrary (not necessarily unital) quantum operations. The theory can be alternatively phrased in terms of the superoperator perspective, or the algebraic noise commutant formalism. As an application, we propose a method for finding all such subspaces and subsystems for arbitrary quantum operations. We suggest that this work brings the fundamental passive technique for error correction in quantum computing an important step closer to practical realization.

Gravitational instantons from gauge theory.

A gauge theory can be formulated on a noncommutative (NC) spacetime. This NC gauge theory has anequivalent dual description through the so-called Seiberg-Witten (SW) map in terms of an ordinary gauge theory on a commutative spacetime. We show that all NC U(1) instantons of Nekrasov-Schwarz type are mapped to asymptotically locally Euclidean (ALE) gravitational instantons by the exact SW map and thatthe NC gauge theory of U(1) instantons is equivalent to the theory of hyper-Kähler geometries. It implies the remarkable consequence that ALE gravitational instantons can emerge from local condensates of purely NC photons.

Generation and control of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger entanglement in superconducting circuits.

Going beyond the entanglement of microscopic objects (such as photons, spins, and ions), here we propose an efficient approach to produce and control the quantum entanglement of three macroscopic coupled superconducting qubits. By conditionally rotating, one by one, selected Josephson-charge qubits, we show that their Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) entangled states can be deterministically generated. The existence of GHZ correlations between these qubits could be experimentally demonstrated by effective single-qubit operations followed by high-fidelity single-shot readouts. The possibility of using the prepared GHZ correlations to test the macroscopic conflict between the noncommutativity of quantum mechanics and the commutativity of classical physics is also discussed.

Interaction between the Component Enzymes of the Glycine Decarboxylase Multienzyme Complex.

The glycine decarboxylase multienzyme complex comprises about one-third of the soluble protein of the matrix of pea (Pisum sativum) leaf mitochondria where it exists at a concentration of approximately 130 milligrams protein/milliliter. Under these conditions the complex is stable with an approximate subunit ratio of 2 P-protein dimers:27 H-protein monomers:9 T-protein monomers:1 L-protein dimer. When the complex is diluted it tends to dissociate into its component enzymes. This prevents the purification of the intact complex by gel filtration or ultracentrifugation. In the dissociated state the H-protein acts as a mobile cosubstrate that commutes between the other three enzymes and shows typical substrate kinetics. When the complex is reformed, the H-protein no longer acts as a substrate but as an integrated part of the enzyme complex.

Algebraic determination of generating functions for coordination sequences in crystal structures.

Given a connected crystalline structure, the set of paths and cycles of the quotient graph of its bond net is embedded into a commutative ring structure. Multiplication combines walks to build up geodesics of the net whereas addition stands symbolically for enumerating a collection of walks. Topological criteria are used to define zero divisors which enable the development of an algebraic generator into a combination of geodesics that are in a one-to-one correspondence with the vertices of the net. A ring mapping gives the generating function of the coordination sequence in the net.
