Effects of single and chronic administrations of ethanol into rats on activity of soluble and membrane-bound forms of enkephalin convertase were studied in various parts of brain. Regional alterations in the patterns studied dependent on duration of alcoholization were observed. Enkephalin convertase appears to be involved in development of tolerance to alcohol.

Forty autopsy livers from Japanese individuals were studied concerning alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) isozymes using electrophoretic and enzyme assay methods. A remarkably high frequency (85%) was found for the atypical ADH phenotype. The gene frequencies of ADH22 and ADH32 were .625 and .05, respectively. The usual ALDH phenotype showed two major isozyme bands, a faster migrating (low Km for acetaldehyde) and a slower migrating isozyme (high Km for acetaldehyde). Fifty-two percent of the specimens had an unusual phenotype of ALDH, which showed only the slower migrating isozyme. The usual phenotype was inhibited about 20%--30% by disulfiram and the unusual type up to 90%. Such a high incidence in the Japanese of the unusual phenotype, which lacks in the low Km isozyme, suggests that the initial intoxicating symptoms after alcohol drinking in these subjects might be due to delayed oxidation of acetaldehyde rather than its higher-than-normal production by typical or atypical ADH.
The present study compared alcohol pharmacokinetics associated with body weight, anthropometrically estimated total body water, and body mass index in men and women in two experimental sessions, single dose and double dose. All subjects were given the same amount of alcohol (2.3 and 4.6 oz. 86 proof vodka for single dose and double dose, respectively). Data analyses found a significant correlation between body mass index and peak blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Weight and total body water were not significantly correlated with peak BAC. The findings suggested that body mass index may be considered a better criterion than body weight for equating alcohol doses.
An experiment tested whether alcohol increases aggression in women in a situation in which both an aggressive and a nonaggressive response alternative of equal instrumentality and of equal variability are available. Subjects were assigned to one of three groups, namely, an alcohol, a placebo, or a control group. The alcohol dose was 1.0 ml of pure alcohol/kg body weight. After drinking their respective drink, subjects were instructed to supervise a bogus partner on a visual scan test over a series of trials. Each time this partner made a mistake, subjects could either give an uncomfortable electric shock (scale 1 to 10) or a comfortable vibration (scale 1 to 10) to the partner. Aggressive and nonaggressive behavior was measured as numbers, intensities, and durations of shocks or vibrations, respectively. Neither alcohol nor frustration differentiated the groups on aggressive or nonaggressive behavior. All groups were significantly more inclined to use the nonaggressive alternative irrespective of alcohol dose and level of frustration. In conclusion it was stated that women do not increase their aggression as a function of alcohol in a situation with more than one response alternative available. The need to incorporate gender differences as to aggressive effects of alcohol was stressed.
It has been shown that intraperitoneal injection of alcohol in a single subnarcotic dose decreases 3H-GABA accumulation in the medulla oblongata, hypothalamus, nucleus caudatus, cortex, and thalamus. When given in a narcotic dose alcohol produces biphasic changes in 3H-GABA accumulation by the brain: an increase within the period of narcosis and a reduction in 24 hours. Acetaldehyde given in a narcotic dose causes a steady increase in 3H-GABA penetration in all the structures. There were also differences in 3H-GABA penetration in the cortex and hypothalamus in rats with high and low rates of alcohol consumption under the conditions of free choice. The role of changes in functional relationships between GABA system elements in the formation of alcohol motivation and dependence is discussed.
BACKGROUND: Well-known reports suggest that the use of energy drinks might reduce the intensity of the depressant effects of alcohol. However, there is little scientific evidence to support this hypothesis. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The present study aimed at evaluating the effects of the simultaneous ingestion of an alcohol (vodka(37.5%v/v)) and an energy drink (Red Bull-3.57 mL/kg), compared with those presented after the ingestion of an alcohol or an energy drink alone. Twenty-six young healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to 2 groups that received 0.6 or 1.0 g/kg alcohol, respectively. They all completed 3 experimental sessions in random order, 7 days apart: alcohol alone, energy drink alone, or alcohol plus energy drink. We evaluated the volunteers' breath alcohol concentration, subjective sensations of intoxication, objective effects on their motor coordination, and visual reaction time. RESULTS: When compared with the ingestion of alcohol alone, the ingestion of alcohol plus energy drink significantly reduced subjects' perception of headache, weakness, dry mouth, and impairment of motor coordination. However, the ingestion of the energy drink did not significantly reduce the deficits caused by alcohol on objective motor coordination and visual reaction time. The ingestion of the energy drink did not alter the breath alcohol concentration in either group. CONCLUSIONS: Even though the subjective perceptions of some symptoms of alcohol intoxication were less intense after the combined ingestion of the alcohol plus energy drink, these effects were not detected in objective measures of motor coordination and visual reaction time, as well as on the breath alcohol concentration.

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is widely used in industrial and home-cleaning products, easily available to general public and inexpensive: intoxications can occur unintentionally, in suicide attempts or by alcohol abusers as a substitute for ethanol. Symptoms involve the gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system and at high doses cardiovascular manifestations may appear. Ketonemia, ketonuria without hyperglicemia or acidosis and elevated osmol gap are common laboratory findings. Mortality and morbidity is low, but some fatal cases have been reported in patients in deep coma and especially those with hypotension. We present a life-threatening intoxication, with deep coma and hypotension, treated successfully with hemodialysis. Whether hemodialysis must always be performed is a controversial question. Our opinion is hemodialysis is not needed, even in life-threatening situations. Arguments about this opinion are presented.
