23/9 dimensional anisotropic scaling of passive admixtures using lidar data of aerosols.

In buoyancy-driven flows, another dimensional quantity appears in addition to the energy flux. Classically, this leads to the prediction that at large scales, isotropic Bolgiano-Obukhov (BO) scaling can dominate isotropic Kolmogorov scaling. We investigate this in the atmosphere by using state-of-the-art high-powered lidar data. We examine simultaneous horizontal and vertical sections of passive scalar surrogates over the ranges 100 m to 120 km and 3 m to 4.5 km , respectively. Overall, this spans the crucial "mesoscale" and involves nearly 1000 times more data than the largest relevant experiments to date. Rather than a transition from one isotropic regime to another, we find that the two regimes always coexist in an anisotropic Corrsin-Obukhov law with the Kolmogorov holding in the horizontal, and the BO holding in the vertical. The stratification is quantified by an elliptical dimension D(el) found to be equal to 2.55+/-0.02 . This anisotropic scaling is very close to that predicted by the 23/9 dimensional unified scaling model of the atmosphere and is consistent with observations of the horizontal wind.

Anisotropic admixture in color-superconducting quark matter.

The analysis of color-superconducting two-flavor deconfined quark matter at moderate densities is extended to include a particular spin-1 Cooper pairing of those quarks which do not participate in the standard spin-0 diquark condensate. (i) The relativistic spin-1 gap delta(') implies spontaneous breakdown of rotation invariance manifested in the form of the quasifermion dispersion law. (ii) The critical temperature of the anisotropic component is approximately given by the relation T(')(c) approximately delta(')(T=0)/3. (iii) For massless fermions the gas of anisotropic Bogolyubov-Valatin quasiquarks becomes effectively gapless and two dimensional. Consequently, its specific heat depends quadratically on temperature. (iv) All collective Nambu-Goldstone excitations of the anisotropic phase have a linear dispersion law and the whole system remains a superfluid. (v) The system exhibits an electromagnetic Meissner effect.

Sheep twin chimaeras with admixtures of red cell amino acid and potassium transport phenotypes.

A pair of sheep twins each had two populations of red cells. Population 1 was positive for antigens Aa, Ma and Mb, was low-potassium type, possessed an amino acid transport system and was lysine-negative phenotype. Population 2 was negative for antigens Aa, and Mb, was high-potassium type, lacked the amino acid transport system and was lysine-positive phenotype. Population 2 disappeared from both sheep over a period of 8 years.

Stability of cefuroxime sodium in some aqueous buffered solutions and intravenous admixtures.

Cefuroxime sodium (Zinacef) is a new semisynthetic, broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic for parenteral administration which is stable to most of the beta-lactamases. The stability of cefuroxime sodium in aqueous solutions, with or without phosphate buffer, and in 5% dextrose and 0.9% sodium chloride injections was studied using a stability-indicating high-pressure liquid chromatographic method developed in our laboratory. The optimum pH range of stability was determined to be approximately 4.5-7.3. Both buffered and unbuffered solutions followed first-order decomposition. In 5% dextrose and 0.9% sodium chloride injections, cefuroxime was stable for 1 day (more than 90% potent) at 25 degrees C and for at least 30 days at 5 degrees C. At -10 degrees C, there was negligible decomposition after 30 days. The pH values of the solutions stored at 5 degrees C and -10 degrees C remained in the maximum stability range and the solutions were clear even after 30 days of storage. Thawing the frozen solutions in a microwave oven adversely affected the stability.

Chemical stabilities of famotidine and ranitidine hydrochloride in intravenous admixtures.

The chemical stabilities of famotidine and ranitidine hydrochloride solutions in 5% dextrose and 0.9% sodium chloride injections have been studied using high-performance liquid chromatographic methods (HPLC). Both the drugs were stable for at least 15 days (loss in potency of less than 10%) at 25 degrees C and 63 days at 5 degrees C. Both drugs were comparatively less stable in 5% dextrose injection than in 0.9% sodium chloride injection. The loss in the potency of phenol, which is added as a preservative to ranitidine hydrochloride injection, was significant in both the vehicles. However, the addition of preservative in a single dose vial is not considered necessary.
