Chaetogaster limnaei, an oligochaete was always found infesting Bulinus (Phy.) globosus, B.(B.) forskalii and Lymnaea natalensis in Bo, Sierra Leone, living below the shell or embedded in the mucus of the foot. The worms had no preference for snails with trematode infection. The population was highest in the dry season when fewer snails were infected by trematodes. This is suggested to be a result of the protection the worms give to snails against invading miracidia.

The cartilages (or "chondroid" tissue) in tentacles of the polychaete annelid, Sabella melanostigma, have been examined by electron microscopy and a series of histochemical techniques for the demonstration of mucopolysaccharides and protein end-groups. The ultrastructural studies indicated that the cartilages possess an investing layer of dense connective tissue which differs significanly from the matrix material secreted between the chondrocytes. The cartilage matrix was positive for acidic mucins with levels of sulfation above those of mammalian chondroitins A and C. This matrix as well as the investing connective tissue were intensely PAS-positive. Sabella cartilage was also stained intensely by methods for demonstrating tryptophan, tyrosine, side-chain carboxyl groups, disulfide groups, and amino groups. It was not stained by the procedure for sulfhydryl groups. Some evolutionary aspects of cartilage and chondroid tissues were discussed.
The cuticle consits of collagenous fibres and of two types of mucopolysaccharides. The whole cuticle contain PAS-positive polysaccharides, but the acid ones are localized only in the surface zone, both in the epicuticle and in the supracuticular mucoid coat. On the surface-damaged region of the cuticle bacterial infection was observed, those intact mucoid coat may be essential in protection against bacterial infection. Microvilli of the supporting cells play significant role in repairing of cuticular injuries. Acid mucopolysaccharides of the cuticle and epidermis may function as traps for heavy metals, proved by their significant heavy metal content. The cytosol of the epidermal cells possess considerable DAB-reactivity. The enzyme, responsible for the DAB-reaction, may be transported by the microvilli towards the cuticular surface and can play central role in the detoxication of organic foreign compounds.
