[Secondary osteoplasty in congenital clefts of the primary palate. Technic and results apropos of 43 cases].

43 patients with primary palatal clefts (53 clefts) were treated by secondary osteoplasty. In 85% of cases the graft enabled closure of the bucco-nasal fistula and alveolar continuity was reestablished in 98% of cases. Complications were minimal and did not generally affect the final result. The ideal age for the procedure would seem to be between 8 and 11 years, thereby allowing eruption of the canine under normal conditions and the production of a continuous dental arcade.

Periodontal surgery: what's new?

An overview of newer periodontal surgical techniques is provided. Procedures which are being used to replace or regenerate periodontal attachment tissues or to restore the normal surface appearance of the periodontium are briefly described.

Comparison of ilium to rib for bone grafting in defects of canine mandibular alveolar fidge.

The behavior of iliac and rib grafts in surgically created defects in canine alveolar ridges was investigated. Despite the greater amount of potentially osteogenic tissue in the iliac graft, no significant qualitative differences were noted in the bony remodeling for a year. However, the rib grafts did form a mature superior cortical border significantly more rapidly, leading to speculation on the advantages of rib over iliac graft in alveolar ridge grafting.

Canines erupted through grafted alveolar cleft defects in patients with alveolar clefts: a pulp testing evaluation study.

An electric pulp tester (EPT) was used to evaluate the pulpal response of erupted canines in 75 patients: 16 patients with unilateral cleft palate who received autogenous bone grafts to correct their alveolar cleft defects before canine eruption; 35 patients without cleft palate whose canines erupted spontaneously, but who required orthodontic treatment for alignment; and 24 patients without clefts whose canines required surgical uncovering and orthodontic assistance for eruption. Thirty-one percent of the erupted canines in the patients with grafted unilateral clefts did not respond to EPT, whereas all canines in the contralateral noncleft side responded to EPT. There was no clinical or radiographic evidence of pulpal pathosis of the canines that had erupted through the grafted alveolar clefts. However, these teeth had a high incidence of nonresponsiveness to pulp stimulation, therefore necessitating close follow-up in case they show eventual signs of pulpal degeneration that may require endodontic intervention.

Mucosal grafting over Proplast-augmented edentulous ridges: a pilot study.

Full-thickness mucosal grafts were placed over Proplast-augmented alveolar ridges in six mongrel dogs. Five of the six grafts were successful, indicating that properly prepared recipient sites over Proplast provide adequate blood supply to support free grafts. A thicker keratinizing graft such as palatal mucosa may provide greater protection for the implant under the stress of a prosthesis.

A histological study of cartilage autografts and allografts placed in dental sockets of rats.

Seventy-two albino rats were used in order to analyze what occurs when fresh cartilage autografts and allografts are placed into dental extraction sockets. The rats were killed from 1 to 120 days, and the following conclusions were made: autografts were better accepted; there was a tendency to eliminate graft material as healing took place (this was more pronounced in the allograft group); there was appositional growth of the grafts in both graft groups, although this was more pronounced in the autogenous group; the bone trabeculae near the graft in the dental sockets were not formed from the perichondrium; the rate of the alveolar bone healing was retarded, especially in animals that received allografts; with respect to the alveolar socket healing process, there is no advantage in the use of cartilage grafts.
