The influence of high level feeding on the duration of parturition and the incidence of dystocia in dairy cows.

Dairy cows on high and controlled feed levels were observed to determine the duration of the parturition process and the incidence of dystocia. Maternal and foetal mass ratio at calving were recorded. The duration of parturition in cows on high level feeding was significantly prolonged to 5.2 +/- 2.8 hours as compared to 1.34 +/- 0.89 hours in cows on controlled feeding. The incidence of dystocia was significantly higher in over-fed cows. While maternal mass on high level feeding increased by 27.3%, foetal mass increased by only 5.4%.

The effect of parturition on the blood picture of sheep.

Parturition in sheep was associated with significant increases in the packed cell volume, haemoglobin concentration and red cell counts. Subsequently these values gradually declined, attaining prepartum levels by the seventh day post partum. Blood leucocyte counts were also elevated at parturition and this was associated with marked neutrophilia, lymphocytopenia and mild eosinopenia. These changes were gradually reversed thereafter, with normal values being attained by the fourteenth day post partum.

[Attempts at control of parturition in swine with dexamethasone. 1. Effect of various treatment dates in late pregnancy on onset of labor, litter and rearing performance of the sows].

Studies were conducted with 66 gilts with synchronised ovulation, all kept in five separate experimental groups (I-V). Each of the animals received 75 mg Dexamethason (DXMS) per die over three consecutive days of pregnancy. Treatment of Groups I through V was started in this order on the 101st, 103rd, 105th, 107th or 109th days of pregnancy. The average intervals that elapsed between the last DXMS injection and onset of parturition were, in the same order, 174, 167, 133, 94 or 74 hours. Births were concentrated on two consecutive days in Group V. DXMS had no significant effect on the average duration and course of parturitions. The lowest average litter and piglet birth weights were recorded from those DXMS groups with shortest pregnancy. No significant mean differences in piglet weight were any longer established between the groups on the tenth day of age.

Initiation of parturition in humans.

The mechanism by which parturition is initiated in humans is largely unknown. The placenta and fetal membranes appear to play the major role in the initiation of labour, and the fetus may influence the timing of labour. Clinical observations and experiments with animals have revealed that placental neuropeptides may be able to control steroid metabolism and trigger the onset of labour, while the fetus may be able to interact with such events to initiate parturition at an appropriate time. However, further study is needed to determine the role of placental releasing factors and glycoprotein hormones and their ability to control placental steroid metabolism.

[Enzyme values in the serum of newborn blood in relation to the course of parturition (author's transl)].

In 43 newborn, the enzyme activities of LDH, GOT, GLDH, and GPT in the umbilical cord blood, as well as 24 hours post partum was measured. Two groups were formed: 1. Newborn without decelerations during the course of parturition, and 2. Newborn with decelerations in the cardiotocogram. The oxygen partial pressure and the acid-base status in the umbilical cord blood, did not differ significantly in both groups. LDH, GOT and GLDH activities were significantly higher 24 hours post partum in the group of newborn with decelerations, than in the control group. The increase in GLDH by 75% was particularly remarkable. This GLDH increase seems to suggest an increased incidence of liver cell necroses, which must be interpreted as a result of the hypoxic conditions sub partu. A significant correlation between the magnitude of the deceleration areas and the extent of GLDH activities can be established. The correlation between duration of parturition and GLDH activity is likewise significant.

Control of the time of parturition in sows with prostaglandin F2alpha.

Pregnant gilts and sows were given a single intramuscular injection of from 5-10 mg of prostaglandin F2alpha-tromethamine salt (dependent on liveweight) on day 111, 112 or 113 of pregnancy (first day of estrus = day 0) to induce parturition. When injected on day 111, 44% of the pigs farrowed within 40 hours compared with 93% injected on days 112 or 113. The mean time to the induced parturition was 27.3 +/- 4.7 hours. Signs of discomfort were observed during the first hour posttreatment but there were no apparent effects on lactation or on the mothering ability of the dams after farrowing.

Changes in fetal and maternal blood at the end of pregnancy and during parturition in the pig.

Fetal and maternal blood gas tensions, pH, packed cell volume and glucose, fructose and lactic acid concentrations were monitored during the last two days of gestation, during parturition and and the first hour after birth. Blood samples were taken by means of indwelling catheters (implanted seven to 14 days before parturition) from 12 fetuses in seven sows. All fetuses were liveborn at a mean gestational age of 113.1 days. The significant finding was that all variables in fetal blood were stable during labour and, although mild hypercapnia was present during the last three hours, no significant changes in mean values were seen until those of samples taken within 15 minutes of birth. In some fetuses, no changes were seen until after birth, while in others pH and pO2 values declined during the last hour of fetal life. Immediately after birth a rapid increase in pO2 and decrease in pCO2 followed the onset of respiration. Blood pH fell during the first 30 minutes after birth and this fall was accompanied by increasing blood lactic acid concentrations. Blood glucose concentrations rose rapidly in the first 15 minutes after birth and were maintained during the first hour despite separation of the piglets from the sow. There was a transient, but significant, increase in packed cell volume during the period from 15 minutes before to 15 minutes after birth. Maternal values for all variables measured remained virtually unchanged during delivery.

Induction of parturition in sows using prostaglandin F2 alpha or the analogue cloprostenol.

The induction of parturition in sows has been studied using prostaglandin F2 alpha or the analogue cloprostenol on day 112, 113 or 114 of gestation. No difference between treatments was found concerning the interval from injection to parturition, the incidence of stillborn piglets or the piglet viability during the first 48 hours. Whiel 58.3 per cent of the PGF2 alpha-treated sows demonstrated side effects, the corresponding percentage among cloprostenol-treated sows was 5.0. The dominating side effects were biting of cage bars and increased respiratory rate.

Cytokine expression in the placenta. The role of interleukin 1 and interleukin 1 receptor antagonist expression in chorioamnionitis and parturition.

Interleukin 1 (IL-1) is known to be present in placental tissue and is implicated as an endogenous mediator of inflammation and parturition. This study was undertaken to assess the role of IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) in the placenta. Placentas with acute chorioamnionitis, with meconium staining, and without significant inflammation were examined for immunohistochemical expression of IL-1 and IL-1ra. Interleukin 1 and IL-1ra immunoreactivity was variably noted in the amnion, trophoblast, vascular smooth muscle, stromal cells, fibrinoid, and decidua in all placentas. Interleukin 1 immunoreactivity was less intense than IL-1ra immunoreactivity, and both were generally more intense in acute chorioamnionitis. Interleukin 1 receptor antagonist was detected (approximately 5 to 6 ng/mL) in the amniotic fluid of pregnant women at term. Colocalization of IL-1 and IL-1ra in normal and inflamed placentas suggests that the balance between these proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators plays a role in parturition as well as in the pathogenesis of acute inflammation. An increase and/or imbalance in the IL-1 and IL-1ra expression associated with chorioamnionitis may precipitate preterm labor.

The effect of parturition on the interactions within pairs of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

The relationship within common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) pairs is based on pair-bond formation. This pair-bond is important for the successful rearing of the young and for the enhancement of reproductive success. Female marmosets bear twins which are carried mainly by males starting on the first day after the birth of the infants. Little is known, however, about the patterns of sociosexual interaction between callitrichid pairs and how these interactions change after the arrival of offspring. To evaluate the effect of parturition on these interactions, three heterosexual pairs of common marmosets were observed for four weeks before and four weeks after the birth of infants. The animals were kept in individual outdoor cages of the Nucleo de Primatologia, under environmental conditions. The time spent in proximity was mainly attributable to the initiative of females before parturition and the initiative of males after the offspring arrived. Males were groomed more before than after the birth of infants. In contrast, the amount of grooming received by females was the same in the two situations. These observations suggest that the relationship within pairs of common marmosets is slightly modified by the birth of infants and indicates that males and females could be using different strategies to enhance their reproductive success.

Plasma progesterone, estradiol-17 beta and testosterone in maternal and cord blood, and maternal human chorionic gonadotropin at parturition.

To understand the endocrine control of normal parturition in man and interactions of foetal and maternal hormones involved, it is desirable to estimate the hormone levels in the maternal and foetal blood around parturition time. Blood was obtained from the umbilical vessels of 22 male and 30 female neonates and the antecubital veins of their mothers during labour at term. The maternal and neonatal plasma levels of progesterone (P), testosterone (T) and estradiol-17 beta (E2) and maternal plasma levels of human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) were determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA). The effect of the foetal sex on the maternal hormones at term was also evaluated. Mean values, with the standard errors of means, of plasma, P, T and E2 in cord blood were 5.3 +/- 0.3, 8.4 +/- 1.2 and 5.0 +/- 0.3 ng/ml, respectively; in the maternal plasma the values were 18.2 +/- 1.2, 1.2 +/- 0.1 and 4.3 +/- 0.4 ng/ml, respectively. The mean T level was significantly higher in cord than in maternal blood, while P was significantly higher in the maternal than in cord blood. The plasma concentrations of P, T and E2 in the mothers delivering male babies were 16.9 +/- 2.2, 1.2 +/- 0.4 and 4.5 +/- 0.7 ng/ml, respectively; in those delivering female babies, the levels were 16.1 +/- 2.4, 1.1 +/- 0.1 and 4.3 +/- 0.4 ng/ml, respectively. Mean plasma levels of hCG in the women was 0.9 +/- 0.1 microgram/ml with no significant difference between the values in the mothers of male and female babies.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Induction of parturition in cattle: effect of triamcinolone pretreatment on the incidence of retained placenta.

Two experiments were designed to determine whether pretreatment with triamcinolone acetonide (TRI)prior to induction of parturition with dexamethasone(DEX) and cloprostenol (CLO) would reduce the incidence of retained placenta. Experiment 1 was conducted to determine the optimum dosage of TRI and to approximate the optimum interval from TRI to induction with DEX+CLO. All cows received TRI on day 270 of gestation. Cows in group I received 1 mg/30 kg of body weight (BW) of TRI and were induced to calve with DEX+CLO on day 276. Cows in groups II and III received 1 mg/45 kg BW and were induced on days 276 or 277, respectively. Cows in groups IV and V received 1 mg/60 kg BW and were induced on days 277 or 278, respectively. Group VI cows served as untreated controls. There was no difference in the incidence of retained placenta among the treated and control groups. Experiment 2 was conducted to more precisely determine the optimum interval from pretreatment to induction treatment with the chosen dose of TRI. All cows in groups I, II, and III were pretreated with 1 mg/60 kg BW of TRI on day 270 of gestation and received DEX+CLO on days 275, 276 or 277,respectively. Group IV cows served as untreated controls. The incidence of retained placenta was higher (p < 0.05) in groups I and II than in the control group, with group III intermediate and not different from the others. Cows that retained their placentas had higher (p < 0.05) body temperatures from day 2 to day 7 after calving and tended to have a lower pregnancy rate in the subsequent breeding season than cows that did not retain their placentas. Results indicate that pretreatment with TRI seven days prior to induction of parturition with DEX+CLO resulted in a reduced incidence of retained placenta, apparently by advancing placental maturation.

[Fixed acids in protracted parturition].

The levels of lactic acid, pyruvic acid, and L/P index were studied in 15 cows during protracted parturition. All the indices under study respond to the stress to which the organism is exposed as a result of continuing parturient activity:the indices increase in their values, and the peak values occur when the foetus is delivered. The levels of lactic acid and pyruvic acid drop immediately after parturition and the L/P index values decrease from the first hour post partum.

Hypocalcemia at parturition as a risk factor for left displacement of the abomasum in dairy cows.

Total and ionized serum calcium concentrations were measured in 510 Holstein cows at the time of parturition. Cows that subsequently developed left displacement of the abomasum (LDA) were compared with those that did not. Cows that were hypocalcemic at parturition had a 4.8 times greater risk of developing LDA than did normocalcemic cows. Hypocalcemia was associated with the development of LDA whether ionized serum calcium concentration or total serum calcium concentration was used to determine whether cows were hypo- or normocalcemic. The proportion of cows developing LDA was not significantly different between cows that had clinical signs of hypocalcemia and were treated for parturient paresis and cows that were hypocalcemic, but did not have clinical signs and were not treated.

Glycosaminoglycans in cervical connective tissue during pregnancy and parturition.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the content and distribution patterns of glycosaminoglycans in the human cervix during pregnancy and parturition. METHODS: We obtained a total of 87 specimens from nonpregnant and pregnant women. Biopsies (weight 50-200 mg) were taken from the posterior lip of the cervix. Hyaluronic acid, dermatan sulfate, chondroitin sulfates, and heparan sulfate were separated on a Dowex 1 x 2 column and identified. RESULTS: The total amount of glycosaminoglycans increased during pregnancy from 2800 to 5000 nmol/g dry weight. The highest values were observed at the onset of labor (7100 nmol/g dry weight), followed by a sharp decrease during parturition. The clinical features of cervical ripening and dilatation were also associated with remarkable changes in glycosaminoglycan patterns. CONCLUSION: Besides collagenolysis during pregnancy, the glycosaminoglycans are also important regulators of cervical function. The different clinical features of the human cervix are characterized not only by variation in the total glycosaminoglycan content but also by changes in the proportions of the different glycosaminoglycans.

Parturition: activation of stimulatory pathways or loss of uterine quiescence?

Parturition results from the establishment of phasic regular uterine contractions. Contractility in myometrial smooth muscle is stimulated by an increase in intracellular calcium ([Ca2+i]) which activates myosin light chain phosphorylation leading to increased myosin ATPase activity and enhanced rate of acto-myosin cross bridge formation. G proteins play a pivotal role in smooth muscle activation and relaxation by coupling cell membrane receptors to effector enzymes and ion channels. G alpha(s) and G alpha(i) stimulate and inhibit adenylyl cyclase, respectively and control cAMP formation. G alpha(q) stimulates phospholipase C resulting in the formation of two second messengers: inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3) which releases Ca2+ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, and 1,2-diacylglycerol which activates protein kinase C. The oxytocin receptor stimulates myometrial contractility by increasing [Ca2+i] through both pertussis toxin resistant (G alpha(q)) and pertussis toxin sensitive (?G alpha (i)) pathways. beta-Adrenoceptors and prostaglandin EP2 receptors promote relaxation via G alpha(s)-adenylyl cyclase. The concentration of myometrial oxytocin receptors is five-times higher in pregnant compared to non-pregnant myometrium but decreases in samples obtained during labour. When myometrial slices are challenged with oxytocin there is a rapid increase in InsP3 levels with a time course which is similar to the rise in [Ca2+i] provoked by oxytocin in cultured myometrial cells. The formation of InsP3 in response to oxytocin in myometrial tissue at term is similar in samples obtained before and after the onset of labour. G alpha(q) and G alpha(i) are expressed at similar levels in non-pregnant and in pregnant myometrium obtained before or during labour. By contract, G alpha(s) levels are higher in pregnant compared to non-pregnant myometrium and decrease in samples obtained during labor. These changes in G alpha(s) are paralleled by prostaglandin E2-induced adenylyl cyclase activity in the same tissues. Parturition may be the consequence of downregulation of pathways that favour uterine quiescence by increasing cAMP formation, resulting in a relative dominance of stimulatory receptors that increase InsP3/Ca2+ availability.

Event-time analysis of the effect of 60-day milk production on the parturition-to-conception interval in dairy cows.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the effect of early-lactation milk and milk fat production on time to conception. DESIGN: Event-time analysis (survival analysis). SAMPLE POPULATION: 44,450 cows delivering calves between September 1985 and September 1986, from 6,227 Ayrshire dairy herds in 80 Finnish communities. PROCEDURE: Primiparous and multiparous cows were analyzed in separate Cox proportional hazards models. 60-day milk and milk fat production were categorized and regressed against days from parturition to conception for the period 56 to 120 postpartum days, controlling for season of parturition, parity, herd production, occurrence of 43 diseases, and community. RESULTS: Multiparous cows producing above the 80th percentile for 60-day milk, but with milk fat production below the 75th percentile, were significantly more likely to conceive, compared with cows with lower production and compared with cows with similar milk production but with milk fat between the 75th and 97th percentiles. They were slightly more likely to conceive than cows with highest milk fat production, although not significantly so. Primiparous cows producing above the 80th percentile for 60-day milk with milk fat below the 75th percentile also had the highest conception probability. The highest producing primiparae had significantly lower conception probability than all others. CONCLUSIONS: Controlling for disease occurrence, calving season, parity, herd production level, and community, there appeared to be an inverted U-shaped relation between 60-day production and conception probability. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Primiparous cows that are high producers may not be receiving the same careful management that high-producing multiparous cows receive.

Characteristics of fetal heart rate changes during the expulsive stage of bovine parturition in relation to fetal outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize fetal heart rate (FHR) patterns of nonacidotic (N-AC) and acidotic (AC) calves during the expulsive stage of parturition. ANIMALS: 32 calves born to heifers, either unassisted or by moderate traction. PROCEDURE: Cardiotocograms (CTG) evaluated qualitatively (visual) and quantitatively by a moving window technique (width 10, shift 5 minutes) for baseline FHR, variability, and periodic alterations (accelerations and decelerations). RESULTS: Significant differences were apparent between increase in baseline FHR of N-AC and AC calves; change in FHR (delta-FHR), taking into account individual FHR, is a more discriminating parameter. The predominant reaction to uterine contraction is a decrease in FHR; variable decelerations were the most common type in both groups, and late decelerations were seen only in AC calves. Additional characteristics of variable decelerations were more frequently seen in AC calves. CONCLUSIONS: CTG parameters during expulsion can discriminate between AC and N-AC calves, but specific characteristics are not exclusively restricted to AC or N-AC calves. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: CTG recordings during bovine parturition in cattle provide information on the fetal condition and can be used in the future to study the effects of medication and manipulations to the fetus.
