The origin and development of diagnostic radiology as illustrated by postage stamps.

This is a brief account of the scientific history of radiology and its use in medical imaging. The approach is untraditional as the narrative is highlighted with reproductions of selected postage stamps. These illustrations add a new dimension to the presentation of important events leading to the discovery and development of diagnostic radiology.

A study of mail survey method.

A major disadvantage of the mail survey in medical research is non-response, which may introduce bias. This study measured the effect of two simple factors on the response rate to a questionnaire concerning headache and migraine in a survey of 2,508 electors. The two factors were the class of postage and the colour of envelopes used; neither was found to have a significant effect. It was concluded that cheaper mailing methods are not likely to jeopardise response.

Effects of mailing strategies on response rate, response time, and cost in a questionnaire study among nurses.

We conducted a pilot study to determine the most efficient mailing strategy for a postal questionnaire study among nurses in Ontario, Canada. Five mailing strategies involving types of stamps on the return envelopes were considered: no stamp, business-reply stamp, metered stamp, small regular stamp, and large commemorative stamp. We found that paper stamps, especially large commemorative stamps, on return envelopes increased the response rate and reduced the response time, as compared with other mailing strategies. Business-reply stamps had the lowest cost per response received and a low total cost.

The hemoglobinopathies and malaria.

With philatelic illustrations, we review sickle cell anemia, some of the common hemoglobinopathies, and their relevance to malaria. We discuss the mechanism by which hemoglobinopathies arise, the progress made with pre-natal screening, as well as innovative therapies. We review recent developments in the pathophysiology of malaria and discuss innovations in the effort against this parasite.

Stem cell research: cloning, therapy and scientific fraud.

Stem cell research has generated intense excitement, awareness, and debate. Events in the 2005-2006 saw the rise and fall of a South Korean scientist who had claimed to be the first to clone a human embryonic stem cell line. From celebration of the potential use of stem cells in the treatment of human disease to disciplinary action taken against the disgraced scientists, the drama has unfolded throughout the world media. Prompted by an image of therapeutic cloning presented on a South Korean stamp, a brief review of stem cell research and the events of the Woo-suk Hwang scandal are discussed.
