Radiotherapy of the primary site was employed between 1959 and 1965 in the treatment of 335 unselected cases of mouth cancer. The series is examined with regard to the long-term results and gross survival is evaluated in accordance with an actuarial method. Differences dependent on sex and age, and on the type of cancer involved and the treatment modalities are illustrated and discussed.

On the grounds of clinical observations over the use of cryodestruction on 109 patients with malignant neoplasms of maxillofacial localization it has been found that the recurrence took place mainly in cases when neoplasm was localized close to the large vessels (e.g. the lingual artery). The authors suggest to increase the cryoeffect through the artificial weakening of the speed of the blood flow in the vessels of the regions exposed to freezing. With this object in view, special experiments have been carried out and their results are described in the article.

Ten dogs with oral or external nasal fibrosarcoma were treated sequentially with orthovoltage radiation and radiofrequency (RF)-induced hyperthermia. Total radiation doses ranged from 3,200 to 4,800 rad given in 8 to 12 fractions of 400 rad. Immediately after 2 to 4 radiation treatments, hyperthermia was given. Six oral fibrosarcomas were heated to 50 C for 30 sec, using a hand-held RF generator. Four nasomaxillary fibrosarcomas were heated to 43 C for 30 minutes, using a 500-kHz RF generator. Hyperthermia of 50 C resulted in tumor necrosis and infection in 3 dogs and fatal septicemia in 1 dog. Nine of 10 tumors responded to therapy. One year after therapy, 5 dogs were free of disease. Tumor regrowth occurred in 5 dogs. Mean time to tumor regrowth and mean survival time of all dogs were 343 and 398 days, respectively. The results suggested that sequential radiation-hyperthermia is an effective therapeutic regimen for canine fibrosarcoma. It was concluded that this modality not only may be beneficial in the treatment of canine tumors but may be useful for designing new therapeutic approaches to similar tumors in man.
From January 1971 through december 1978, 71 patients with a squamous-cell carcinoma of the uvula and the soft palate have been seen at the Fondation Bergonié : 56 have been treated and followed. The primary tumor is often controlled by external radiation-therapy and/or interstitial therapy among the 12 failure observed, 5 were salvaged by a surgical procedure. The systematic irradiation of cervical lymph nodes areas allowed 94% of control, above the clavicles. However these good results in the loco-regional control are altered by a high rate of second primary and intercurrent death.
A case of central nervous system heterotopia, in association with a unique cleft palate deformity, is presented and discussed. Only two cases of such palatal lesions in association with cleft palates have been previously reported. The subject of pharyngeal and palatal central nervous system heterotopia is reviewed, and hypotheses to account for their clinical behavior are presented.

The authors have shown the possibilities of application of the free radial forearm flap in clinical cases when reconstructing defects in the region of the face and of oral cavity. This flap is particularly useful in cases where it is necessary to duplicate the flap and to reconstruct two layers at the same time.
