Macbeth has been viewed as a play about the oedipal crime of patricide. This paper elaborates on this approach by elucidating the oedipal and preoedipal themes in the roles played by women in the drama, particularly in Macbeth's relationships with Lady Macbeth and with the weird sisters. Differences between Macbeth and Macduff's responses to the oedipal dilemma are also defined. An understanding of these themes provides the context for understanding the underlying hostility toward women implicit throughout the play.

Mahler's theory of symbiosis and separation-individuation demonstrates the essential unity of drive, ego, and object relations psychologies. By highlighting the role that early dyadic relations play in psychic structure formation, her theory expands the understanding of human psychic development and its failures. This paper reviews Mahler's propositions and underscores their clinical importance by describing two cases where much preoedipal reconstructive work preceded the emergence of an analyzable oedipal transference neurosis.
With a decrease in recent years in the external impediments which prevent women from realizing their full potential has come a better view of internal factors. The author explores developmental and psychodynamic issues in the paradoxical situation in which women fear to achieve what they have long desired. The author describes clinical manifestations of success phobia, and analyzes symptom origin within a developmental and psychodynamic framework, and illustrates the types of success inhibition arising from family and early social variables, separation-individuation problems, pathological narcissism, and Oedipal conflict.
According to the diagnosis of preoedipal disturbances it should be worked out, that the test-results are not inconceivable formality and uncomprehension. From the selfrating of 74 neurotic patients we determined on 8 scales of narcism clinical description of well-known personality-dimensions of preoedipal fixation. With a Q-factor-analysis 3 subgroups could be established, which are marked as borderline- and narcistical typus against a typus without narcistic disturbance. The validity of such classification can be estimated about the clinical diagnose of 28 patients of this sample. It proves to be much promising for the diagnostic of preoedipal disturbances.
