[A nursing process integration project].

An integration experiment conducted at the Regional Hospital of Edmundston, New Brunswick, demonstrates that flexibility and persistence can overcome resistance to this necessary and worthwhile process. Having discovered that overly-manipulated data and an inadequate organizational structure can be stumbling blocks to integration, the author shows that support for integration is essential since it can provide a dynamic contribution to the quality of health care.

[The use of the nursing process in an acute respiratory disease service].

Due to the value of patient recovery and the development of nursing practices, 37 infants under 1 year of age are studied. These patients had been hospitalized in the Service of Acute Respiratory Diseases in Sur Teaching Children's Hospital in Santiago de Cuba during the months of March-April, 1987. This research work is based in the process of nursing care, and its aimed to determine the behavior and results of its application in a ward with a staff covering the current indicators. It was found that with the human resources available in this service it was feasible to carry out this process, which enabled a more rapid rehabilitation of these patients, according to the care plan carried out. The nurse-patient relationship became apparent in all of the patients studied, with prevalence of the 6-9 month-old age group.

[The nursing process. Perspectives of teachers and alumnae].

A qualitative investigation has been carried out whose objective has been to explore the real impact of the Nursing Care Attention Process in an educational setting by means of compiling the opinions/perspectives from professors and students. The type of qualitative study used is the case study. To this end, a nursing school having experience in the teaching of Nursing Care Attention Process and having a minimal integration of this topic in its curriculum was selected. The selection of the sample professors and students took place according to pre-established criteria. The sample total included 8 professors and 7 students. Data were collected by means of structurally flexible interviews and with an itemized study of the documents of the center. The content analysis of the data gathered shows that the Nursing Care Attention Process is considered to be an adequate instrument in nursing education but one which requires from the students an early development in a series of knowledge, abilities and capacities so as to be able to use it in practice. Bearing in mind the importance of the teaching setting for the appropriate use of this method, this project concludes with a series of recommendations which should be carefully weighed when designing a curriculum. This article summarizes the author's master' thesis at the University of Manchester.

It is time to move from the nursing process to critical thinking.

As we reflect on the concept of critical thinking in perioperative nursing practice, we should ask ourselves whether we think critically. If not, we must learn the principles of critical thinking and apply them in our clinical practice settings. Our perioperative nurse managers and directors must demonstrate critical thinking in leading other nurses in the delivery of quality, cost-effective, service-oriented patient care. They also must identify peers who use critical thinking skills to support and sustain them in their quest.
