[Composition by size, age and growth of Litopenaeus vannamei (Natantia: Penaeidae), in Mar Neutro lagoon, Oaxaca-Chiapas, Mexico].

The commercial catches of white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei were sampled (May through November 1996) in the Mar Muerto lagoon located between Oaxaca and Chiapas states, Mexico. To measure it's growth rate at the innermost portions of this system, 16,378 length and weight records were obtained. Length fluctuated between 11 and 145 mm, and weights between 0.1 and 26.3 g. The minimum mean size for recruitment to the exploited phase is 45 mm. Organisms leave the lagunar system for recruitment to the marine zone 83-120 mm/length, at an age of 1.5-4.5 months. Analysis of modal progression detected 13 generations inside the lagoon. The growth rates ranged between 0.13 and 1.27 mm/day, with a mean of 0.64 mm/day. The asintotic lengths fluctuated between 105 and 159 mm with a mean of 136 mm, while the asintotic weight fluctuated between 8 and 23 gr with a mean of 15 gr. The parameters of the von Bertalanfy growth model are: L infinity = 136 mm, P infinity = 15 gr, k = 0.0161 mm and to = 5 mm. Both, L infinity and P infinity doesn't represent, at least in this case, the asintótics sizes and weights that the species reach inside the system, but should be interpret like the means sizes and weight that should have the organisms at the time to leave it.

Goals of biomedical support of a mission to Mars and possible approaches to achieving them.

The main medical and biological problems associated with a piloted mission to Mars are discussed. Prerequisites for the mission are described, based on our experience with biomedical support of prolonged piloted missions. The most important factors are developing countermeasures against the prolonged effects of microgravity and hypogravity; solving a complex of psychological problems; developing methods to protect against cosmic radiation; and creating effective and reliable life support systems. Some aspects of the likely risks involved in such a mission are also reviewed.

[Fishing seawater microbiology of the Mar de Plata].

This work deals with different groups of microorganisms in the polluted water of the fishery section of Mar del Plata harbour and in the way followed by the fisher's boats. Bacteriological determinations were: total count, MPN of coliforms, proteolitic and anaerobic bacteria. These groups were selected because of their activity in fish spoilage and/or infection. The microbial groups were studied as follows: direct plate count for total number, most probable number (MPN) for coliforms and fecal type strains according with Mc Crady tables; proteolitic and anaerobic bacteria were cualitatively tested, cuantitative determinations are given in two tables. Obtained results show a heavy water pollution that rapidly decreases towards the harbour entrance.

47,XX + mar karyotype containing genes from the azoospermia factor region. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal embryo development is the major cause of implantation failure and accounts for the low rate of human fertility in vitro and in vivo. Chromosome abnormalities are widely involved in this process through meiotic nondisjunction, fertilization abnormalities and mitotic nondisjunction. CASE: In our assisted reproductive technology program a couple underwent cytogenetic analysis. The woman had a 47,XX + mar karyotype. We investigated this patient by chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) DNA analysis. The marker chromosome was found to be very similar to a Y chromosome in size and QFQ staining pattern. Therefore, it was tested by FISH using alpha- and beta-satellite DNA specific for the Y chromosome, some YACs specific for the long arm of the Y chromosome and alpha-satellite DNA specific for 15 chromosomes as probes. In order to define this marker, the next step was PCR amplification of the whole genomic DNA using specific landmarks (sequence-tagged sites) to encompass the azoospermia factor (AZF) region on the long arm of the Y chromosome. CONCLUSION: A woman had an extra chromosome containing centromeric DNA derived from the Y and 15 other chromosomes, heterochromatic regions derived from 15 chromosomes and a large heterochromatic block at the end of the long arm that definitely was not Y chromosome heterochromatin (beta-satellite). PCR showed several genes of the Y chromosome long arm that are assumed to be involved in male gametogenesis. Phenotypic effects could not be excluded because of the presence of AZF genes. Oocyte karyotyping might better explain the role of the genetic problem on female infertility.

[Indications and therapeutic possibilities of albumin dialysis (MARS)].

Despite remarkable medical advances during the last few years, liver failure--both acute and chronic--still results in high mortality. Since liver transplant programs were developed to improve survival in numerous hepatic end-stage disorders, fewer than 15% of patients with liver failure do actually receive a transplantation, be it because of the presence of procedural contraindications (toxic habits, age, concurrent disease), or of clinical conditions that may render surgery more difficult or worsen transplant prognosis. All these circumstances encouraged the development of alternative procedures to increase liver graft availability, as is the case of liver partition techniques and living-donor transplantation. On the other hand, organ scarcity for transplantation during the 1960s encouraged the parallel development of liver support systems in an attempt to reduce mortality and to improve patient survival while waiting for a transplant. Such systems attempt to replace a number of synthesis and detoxification functions for the damaged liver parenchyma. During the past few years both bioartificial systems--also referred to as "bioartificial livers"--based on bioreactors containing functionally active living hepatocytes, and extracorporeal liver detoxification systems have been developed. The latter type includes the so-called MARS (molecular adsorbent recirculating system) system, which combines albumin-bound molecule clearance and novel dialysis membrane biocompatibility.

[A case of sex determining region of the Y positive 45XO/46 X+mar male].

A 31-year-old man with a chromosomal abnormality 45XO/46X+mar is reported. He was phenotypically a normal male except for azoospermia and small testes. The endoscopic and transrectal ultrasonographic examinations revealed no abnormalities in his internal genitourinary organs. The existence of the sex determining gene "SRY" was confirmed by the PCR method. This suggests that his marker chromosome is a fragment of the short arm of Y chromosome.

[Cardiovascular risk in hemodialysis in Spain: prevalence, management and target results (MAR study)].

Cardiovacular disease is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. However, there are no reliable data neither on the prevalence of cardiovacular disease nor its risk factors in Spain. The Morbidity and mortality Anemia Renal study (MAR) is a two-year multicenter, open-label, prospective cohorts study. Its main objective is to assess the general morbidity and mortality, particularly of a cardiovascular cause, and its relationship with the degree of anemia. Secondary objectives are: a/ the description of current clinical practices in anemia, dialysis, vascular access, and CV risk factor management; and b/ the description of hospitalization and mortality causes. This paper describes the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and risk factors of the HD population in Spain. A total of 1.710 patients were included (60% male, aged 64.4 years, 16.2 months on HD). The mean co-morbidity Charlson index was 6.5 +/- 2.3. Cardiovascular disease was the most prevalent comorbidity, 16.7% had a coronary disease, and 13.9% had different degrees of heart failure, while 11.6% had arrhythmia, 1.7% stroke and 5.5% peripheral artery disease. The prevalence of hypertension was 75.8%, 74.4% of patients received antihypertensive drugs, and still 40% of patients had an inadequate blood pressure control. The investigators considered as dyslipidemic 34.1% of patients, and prescribed treatment to 69.5% of them, while the remaining 30.5% (10.4% of the total) had hyperlipidemia with no drug therapy. Eleven percent was active smoker, and 26.6% former smoker. There was 47.4% of patients with a corporal mass index above 25. Secondary hyperparathyroidism with PTH above of 300 pg/ml was present in 22.2% of patients. Despite the EBPG and K-DOQI recommendations, only 68.8% of prevalent hemodialysis patients attained a hemoglobin (Hb) above 11 g/dl, 89.4% ferritin levels above 100 ng/ml, 66.5 degrees/a a transferrin saturation index (TSI) above 20%, and 61.1% met all three objectives. In summary, this first cross-sectional analysis has allowed us to know in detail the standard practice in multiple aspects of management of HD population in Spain. It has also established clear differences in the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and risk factors from the US registries. Last but not least we have identified therapeutic opportunities to improve the course and prognosis of our patients.

[Liver albumin dialysis (MARS)--treatment of choice in Amanita phalloides poisoning?].

UNLABELLED: Amanita phalloides is a direct life-threatening poisoning because of acute multiorgan failure. Urgent liver transplantation (LTx) is the last chance to save patient's life in severe cases. In many cases of mushroom poisoning the patient dies because of unavailability of a liver graft. Liver albumin dialysis (MARS) is a promising treatment to bridge the patient to LTx or stabilize his or her condition until spontaneous liver regeneration occurs. CASE REPORT: Four family members (father, mother and two sons) were eating self-collected mushrooms (Russula vesca). Typically for the Amanita phalloides poisoning, the first symptoms appeared in all persons more than 12 hours after mushroom ingestion. Because they did not improve, the whole family was admitted to the Regional Hospital in Ketrzyn (24 hours after mushroom ingestion). Mycological examination of gastric washings was positive only in the mother, in whom the Amanita phalloides spores were found. During the first 48 hours of poisoning the biochemical indexes of liver injury were observed in all persons. The whole family members were sent to centers where liver albumin dialysis could be performed: the mother was admitted to the Department of Nephrology and Dialysis Therapy in Olsztyn, the father and the first son were admitted to the Clinical Toxicology Department in Krak6w, and the second son was admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine and Acute Poisonings in Gdańsk. Three albumin dialysis procedures were performed in the case of mother with complete liver recovery. After the first liver albumin dialysis, the father of the family was disqualified from the following procedures because of severe coagulation disturbances (GI bleeding), and died the fourth day after mushroom ingestion. The first son fulfilled the King's College criteria and was accepted for high urgency liver transplantation. After two albumin dialysis procedures had been able and the patient was urgently sent to the Department of General and Transplantation Surgery in Szczecin, where liver transplantation was successfully performed. The second son was treated conservatively with improvement of general condition and biochemical indexes and no albumin dialysis procedure was necessary. CONCLUSION: Liver albumin dialysis may be effective in severe Amanita phalloides poisoning to stabilize the condition of a patient until spontaneous liver regeneration occurs or as a bridge to LTx. In cases of a family poisoning, proper coordination and cooperation among toxicology departments and transplant centers is required.

Ethological indicators of isolated and confined teams in the perspective of missions to Mars.

INTRODUCTION: This study proposes an ethological overview of the social behavior of confined and isolated teams within three experimental chambers and at a polar base during long-duration campaigns. These were undertaken as analogous conditions of the mobility restraint and social constraint to which Mars teams would have to adapt. METHOD: The ethological method consisted of weekly observations and descriptions of the subjects' motor actions and spatial positions at dinnertime, then evaluating their levels of frequency in terms of distances, orientations, and dispersions, as well as facial expressions and body movements. RESULTS: Changes in social behavior indicate different adaptive strategies over time and according to the situation. In large or open areas, interindividual distances are constant. In reduced habitats, the frequency of personal distances decreases and the frequency of public distances increases with high levels of social distance and body mobility from the initial period to the final period. Increasing spatial dispersion and decreasing social orientations indicate low levels of sociality within the teams at the mid-period. Frequent collateral activities during long-duration confinement campaigns indicate high levels of stress in the team members. DISCUSSION: Such ethological indicators could be used in future interplanetary mission scenarios.

[Isolation of Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli strains during a gastrointestinal outbreak at a day care center in Mar del Plata City].

From October 15 to November 8, 2003, a gastrointestinal outbreak occurred at a day care center in a Hospital in Mar del Plata City. Fourteen out of 80 (17.5%) children, mean age 23.6 +/- 13.9 months, and the mother of one of them had diarrhea. One case developed hemolytic uremic syndrome. No conclusive evidence of the origin of the outbreak was found, but the epidemic curve suggested person-to-person spread. The usual practices at the place where infant milk formula was prepared at the day care center, together with the inadequate infrastructure conditions and hygiene practices at the kitchen of the hospital, were considered risk factors. One case had Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O103:H2 infection and other STEC O26:H11. The duration of shedding for the child with O26:H11 infection was 37 days. In the other symptomatic children, the pathogen was not recovered from fecal samples collected 6 or more days after the onset of the illness. This emphasizes that the collection of early samples is necessary to recover STEC strains. In order to prevent and control enteric diseases in day care facilities the following measures are necessary: optimal hygiene standards, early case reporting, and exclusion of those who remain culture-positive.

[Sexually transmitted diseases: epidemiological characteristics of cases notified in the health service of Viña del Mar-Quillota].

During 1987 and 1988 sexually transmitted diseases affected 87.2 per 100,000 inhabitants of the Viña del Mar-Quillota area. At all ages rates were 3.8 times higher in males compared to females. Gonorrhoea, syphilis and non gonorrheal urethritis accounted for most cases. In males, 82% of cases corresponded to gonorrhoea, in females 50% corresponded to gonorrhoea and 50% to syphilis. Rural and urban figures were not significantly different, except for HIV infection which was predominantly urban. Rates of different infections peaked at different ages: HIV between 30 and 39, gonorrhoea from 15 to 29, syphilis from 40 to 49 and after 60 and non gonorrhoeal urethritis from 15 to 59. In a survey of affected subjects 85% manifested to be heterosexual, 10% omitted a response.

Radiation treatment of early vocal cord carcinoma. Eighteen years experience at "Instituto de Oncologia y Radioterapia de Mar del Plata".

A detailed retrospective analysis of 260 patients with T 1 NO MO vocal cord carcinoma treated at "Instituto de Oncologia y Radioterapia de Mar del Plata" from 1967 to 1985 was performed. The majority of the patients were in the age range of 50 to 79 years, and 79% were males. The overall observed three year tumor free survival was 85.3%. When survival rate was adjusted for intercurrent disease and second primary tumor death, the 3 year tumor free survival was 92%. Sixty two percent of the patients (17/27) undergoing surgical salvage for recurrence, were controlled. Second primary tumors were seen in 18 patients (6.9%). It is emphasized the importance of close follow up to diagnose as early as possible both the vocal cord recurrence and the second primary tumors.

[Antispermatozoa autoantibodies in male sterility. Value of the detection of surface immunoglobulins G by the MAR test].

The mixed antiglobulin reaction (MAR) test for immunoglobulins G was performed on 574 spermograms, resulting in the detection of surface auto-antibodies directed against spermatozoa in 4.18% of the cases. Concomitant investigations of spermograms for spontaneous agglutination and cross-penetration in a control cervical mucus, together with assays of antispermatozoa antibodies in serum and seminal fluid, have led to the diagnosis of asthenospermia in 87.5% of the cases. Spontaneous sperm agglutination was present in all cases; the cross-penetration test was negative or doubtful in 92.3%. Auto-antibodies against spermatozoa were found in 76.2% of serum and/or seminal fluid samples.

[Refractory sideroblastic anemia, three cases with the same extra marker chromosome (47, Mar +) (author's transl)].

Three very similar cases of sideroblastic idiopathic anemia were respectively observed for 105, 57 and 69 months. The cytogenetic blood study was normal. But the medullary genetic findings showed marker extra-chromosome, having the same aspect in each metaphase = 47 Mar +. It was respectively found in 13 mitoses/32, 2/45 and 1/30. The study of chromosome showed that it was not a normal cytogenetic C-chromosome at all, even it seemed to be a C - X type chromosome at first. The long arms had about the same size as the one of the C- type. But the short arms were really shorter. The study on R- bands showed a chromosomic marking unkown so far. The cytogenetic abnormalities described during the sideroblastic idiopathic anemias, the rare sideroblastic idiopathic anemias where were found a C- type chromosome really identified, then the well-defined myeloproliferative disorders having an extra- C chromosome, have been looked over again through the litterature. In each of our three studies we can think that these myelodysplasia are real mysloproliferative disorders because of the same marker extra-chromosome, but even after nine months we did'nt observe any chromosomal sign of blastic transformation.

[A problem detected by the AMDP rating of the Mar. case: the relation between phobia and obsession].

The rating of the videotaped interview of the Mar. case during three meetings of the French-speaking section of the AMDP has revealed the problem of the relationships between phobia and obsession. These ratings triggered a critical reflection based on the theoretical framework from the literature, on the clinical material (the videotaped interview) and on the pragmatic difficulties which appeared during the discussions of the ratings.

An ELISA for antisperm antibody detection in serum: comparison with TAT and SIT in serum, with MAR-test, immunobead-test and TAT in semen and with micro-SIT in cervical mucus.

16 couples belonging to couples with negative or doubtful PCT were selected according to the presence of antisperm immunization. 12 patients, 5 male and 7 female, showed both localized and generalized immunization. The former was diagnosed by means of a positive IgG MAR-Test, direct IgG Immunobead-Test, direct IgG Immunobead-Test and seminal TAT in the male patients, and Micro-SIT in the cervical mucus of the female patients, while for the latter there was simultaneous positivity of both serum TAT and SIT, except for two cases, in which the SIT only was positive. The 4 remaining patients, 2 male and 2 female, did not show any signs of antisperm immunization. The evaluation of the antisperm antibodies by means of the ZER ELISA Antisperm Kit in the serum of the 16 patients examined showed that there were no significant statistical differences between the serum TAT and the SIT. The former showed agreement of the results in 93.75% of the cases, and the latter in 81.25%. A strict correlation was observed between the ELISA for serum antisperm antibodies (ELISA-AS-Abs) and the local immunitary situation, with agreement in 93.75% of the cases. The ELISA-AS-Abs seems to bring the advantage of eliminating the need for fresh semen for antibody titration and also means that there is no subjective interference with the evaluation of the results.
