[Effect of neck massage therapy on the soft tissues after thyroid surgery].

Our objectives in this study were to establish validated methods of massotherapy of the neck, to determine its action on the neck structures, and to conduct a comparative evaluation of results of the control and study groups after performing massotherapy. It has been found out that in 80 (85%) patients the skin comes to be tinged with healthy pink, the cutaneous-and-muscle tone getting improved, which event makes the skin smooth and elastic following the above massage. Over the first ten days of the massoprocedures 44 (48%) subjects demonstrated resolution of the edema and swelling, with the thickened skin fold as a roller dissappearing by the end of the second month. Dispelling of hypothyrosis phenomena made for reduction of dosages of hormonal preparations. We consider it mandatory that massotherapy of the neck be instituted in all those patients who had undergone operation on the neck and thyroid.

[Effects of underwater massage douche on left ventricular diastolic function in patients with chronic cardiac failure and postinfarction cardiosclerosis].

78 patients with postmyocardial infarction cardiosclerosis and moderate chronic cardiac failure (NYHA functional class 0-2) were given standard medication (enalapril, aspirin, atenolol) and took underwater massage douche. The effects of the latter on diastolic dysfunction of the left ventricular myocardium were studied. The above hydrotherapy changed parameters of left ventricular diastolic filling in 64% of the examinees: in 40% these parameters improved, in 23%--deteriorated. Clinical and device criteria essential for hydrotherapy outcomes are described.

[A portable sternal compressor for cardiac massage on a patient carried by a litter--Part 3: Applicability of the device tested by a recording manikin].

Effects of a portable sternal compressor developed by us was examined by 43 medical students (28 males and 15 females) and 9 anesthesia residents using a recording manikin. Compression over a depth of 3.5 to 5.0 cm was classified as adequate. First, the examinee held the device affixed in front of the chest with a belt hanged over the shoulder and pulled the other handle back and forth at a rate of 100 per minute. The male students could perform adequate compression in 92% of the total number of compression in the first one minute, while female students could in 65%. Though the anesthesia residents accomplished 99% of success rate in the first one minute, the rate fell to nearly 80% in the next minute and about 50% thereafter due to fatigue. When one handle was sustained on the floor with its fold-in stand and held between the knees of the examinee sitting on a chair, adequate compression was performed with the success rate of over 80% for 5 minutes. We conclude this device will be useful for cardiac massage on a patient either transported on a litter or lying on a soft bed.

[Comparative efficacy of various massage techniques in the rehabilitation treatment of patients with inhalation trauma early after admission to the hospital].

67 patients with inhalation trauma of 90 patients with acute thermal trauma and 23 healthy controls participated in the trial. External respiration function was assessed on the spirograph SPIROSIFT-3000 (Fukuda Densy, Japan). The injured patients have undergone chest vibromassage (n = 23), vibromassage of Zakhariin-Head zones (trachea-bronchi-lungs) (n = 22), manual chest massage (n = 22). Improvement of clinical and external respiration parameters was more significant in patients exposed to vibromassage of the trachea-bronchi-lungs zones.

[A microcomputerized pulsed water-sac massage with drug penetration instrument for treatment of male patients with immunity infertility accompanied by chronic seminal vesiculitis].

This article describes the development of an innovative microcomputerized pulse-water-sac massage with drug penetration instrument and reports its effectiveness in the patients with immunity infertility accompanied by chronic seminal vesiculitis. The instrument was developed on the basis of the pathological characteristics of immunity infertility accompanied by chronic seminal vesiculitis, and along the lines of our practice in integrating the modern theory of traditional Chinese medicine, with multiple techniques of biomedical engineering sciences. 181 male patients with immunity infertility accompanied by chronic seminal vesiculitis received the treatment. Of these cases, 135(74.6%) were cured, 37(20.4%) were treated with significant therapeutic effects and 9(5.0%) with improved effects. The results of antisperm antibody (AsAb) tests became negative in 85.6% of the patients after treatment, and the pregnancy rate of their wives was 49.1%. No mild adverse effects were observed in all cases.

[Liver and splenic ruptures as a complication of heart pressure massage].

UNLABELLED: Injuries of the abdominal organs, especially liver and spleen, which were caused by resuscitative measures, can occasionally raise problems if an expert opinion on death is obtained particularly with regard to previous traumatization and if the question arises whether the trauma could have been avoided or not. These questions will be discussed from different points of view by means of ten cases. RESULT: Even when lege-artis-cardiac massage is made, the above mentioned complications cannot always be avoided. In none of the ten cases the trauma caused by resuscitative measures was the cause of concomitant cause of fatal outcome.

[Successful indirect cardiac massage as a cause of thoracic wall instability and respiratory insufficiency].

The authors in their two cases describe unusual complication after successful indirect cardiac massage which was carried out in terrain. Both patients were then transferred to Dept. of gerontology and metabolic care. However the resuscitation was in both cases successful it caused in these two cachectic oseoporotic patients sternal and costal en block fractures. This iatrogenic trauma of thoracic wall showed up in further cause as a major problem. The patients could not have been disconnected from artificial support of ventilation and therefore their thoracic cage had to be surgically stabilized.

[The effect of heat stimulation and mechanical stress (massage) of salivary glands on the secretory parameters of salivary Hsp70. A pilot study].

The presence of Hsp70 in human whole saliva was demonstrated in the authors' previous study. In the recent study the authors investigated, whether repeated, short-term heat and mechanical stimulation of the salivary glands can specifically modify the salivary Hsp70 concentration in the human whole saliva. Some other basic secretory parameters, like salivary secretion rate, total protein concentration and amylase activity of the whole saliva were also measured. Both kind of stimulation increased the secretory rate significantly (p < or = 0.05), during stimulation, but it decreased to control level in resting phases. Hsp70 concentration increased after the first stimulation in the case of mechanical stress and after the second stimulation in the case of heat stimulation. In contrast, a significant (p < or = 0.05) confluent increase of total protein concentration and amylase activity occurred after the first stimulation in the case of heat stimulation and after the second stimulation in the case of mechanical stress. Further investigations are needed to evaluate the durability and clinical importance of salivary changes following local heat and massage stimulation.

[Vibration massage in the prevention of postresection complications and in the clinical rehabilitation of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis after surgical interventions].

A new procedure has been developed for prevention of early postresectional complications and for clinical rehabilitation of patients with tuberculosis after surgical interventions. The procedure is based on a 13-14-day course of regional and systemic physiotherapy applied to a patient's respiratory organs and chest after surgery in a certain order with the use of tuberculostatic agents. Regional physiotherapy includes local massage of the root of the contralateral operated lung with a light vibromassage apparatus; systemic physiotherapy involves electric vibroacupressure of the whole circumference of the chest with a special device. Early postresection complications were significantly less frequently observed in the study group (n = 60) than in the control group (n = 50) (p < 0.01). The procedure reduces the likelihood of development of a number of pleuropulmonary events (atelectasis, non-specific pneumonia, residual postresection pleural cavity, bronchial fistulas) and promotes functional rehabilitation in patients.

[Value of intermittent pneumatic massage in the treatment of upper extremity lymphedema].

Technique and results of the conservative treatment of 116 female patients with secondary lymphedema of the upper extremity following total mastectomy are discussed. It was found, that intermittent pneumatic massage combined with exercises decreased mild edema by more that 50%, moderate edema by nearly 40%, and marked edema by more that 25%. Complete disappearance of edema was achieved in nearly 50% of patients with mild swelling. Improvement was seen in 20% of the treated patient independently of the extension of edema.

[Reflex therapy, massage, and manual therapy in the treatment of progressive myopia in children and adolescents].

The paper describes the methods and results of multimodality treatment for progressive myopia in children and adolescents, by applying acupuncture, massage, and manual therapy. Thirty-three patients aged 7 to 17 years who had progressive myopia of 0.5 to 10.8 diopters were treated by an original procedure as repeated courses. Their follow-up lasted 2 years. A beneficial therapeutic effect as increases in uncorrected and subcorrected visual acuity, ocular accommodation reserves, and myopia regression rates was observed in 64% of the patients. Two-year myopia stabilization was achieved in 45% of cases. There were neither complications nor side effects. The possible mechanism of the remedial effect of the procedure is discussed in the paper.

Massage therapy on neck: a contributing factor for destructive thyrotoxicosis?

A 57-year-old woman with Hashimoto's disease is described who developed transient destructive thyrotoxicosis subsequently after she underwent physical massage therapy over her shoulder to neck, together with the goiter, for muscle stiffness in that part. This case supports the concept that physical vigorous manipulation might be a contributing factor for thyrotoxicosis in cases predisposed with autoimmune thyroiditis.

[Effect of medicated bath plus acupoint massage on limbs in treating 42 patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of medicated bath plus acupoint massage on limbs (B-M treatment) in treating diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). METHODS: Eighty-two patients were divided into two groups, the control group (n=40) and the treated group (n=42), they were treated by conventional treatment but with B-M treatment applied to the latter additionally, the course to both groups was 12 weeks. The curative effects obtained were compared after treatment. RESULTS: The total effective rate was higher in the treated group than that in the control group (81.0% vs. 52.5%, P < 0.05); the nerval transmission speed was improved significantly (P < 0.05) after treatment in both group, but that in the treated group was better than in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: B-M treatment on limbs has better effect than Western medicine along in promoting DPN restoration.

Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction in Japanese infants: its incidence and treatment with massage.

We examined the patency of 670 nasolacrimal ducts in 335 newborn infants--42 patients (62 ducts) had obstructions; the involvement was unilateral in 22 and bilateral in 20. No sexual predilection was noted. All affected patients were treated with hydrostatic massage at the area of the lacrimal sac. About two-thirds of the ducts became patent by 2 months after birth, while the remainder became patent by 9 months. Only one patient who had acute dacryocystitis at age 5 months required a probing of the duct and a regimen of systemic antibiotics to achieve good results.

Prenatal cranial haemorrhages in 47 Pacific Islander infants: is traditional massage the cause?

Intracranial haemorrhage is usually a very rare occurrence in the fetus before the onset of labour but we have identified major, mostly subdural, prenatal intracranial haemorrhages in 47 infants of immigrant Pacific Islander parentage. Forty-four infants have been stillborn and the numbers from 1983 to 1986 were sufficient to account for the stillbirth rate for Pacific Islanders in Auckland being approximately 60% higher than rates for Europeans or Maoris. Two of three liveborn infants survived with neurological sequelae. Similar haemorrhages may be the cause of a congenital hydrocephalus in Pacific Islanders. A bleeding disorder can be excluded in most cases, as can trauma from accidents or assaults. Trauma during attempts at cephalic version of breech presentations by traditional methods could explain why 53% of deliveries were breech and other pathological and clinical features. Advice at antenatal clinics about possible dangers of traditional massage has coincided with a reduction in the incidence of haemorrhages since 1986.

[A portable manual sternal compressor for cardiac massage of a patient under transportation--1. Evolution after trials and errors].

Difficulties of external cardiac massage during transportation of a patient on a litter or stretcher prompted us to develop a new portable manual sternal compressor. A seemingly good idea of sternal compression with an inflatable balloon placed between the sternum and a chest band engaged us in a long ordeal of trial and error until we retreated from this preconception. A practical sternal compressor has finally been created by applying two hydraulic pistons, one as a sternal compressor and the other as its push-pull energizer incorporated into a manual lever system. In this paper, one of the serial reports on this new device, all our errors are described lest some one in the future meet the same problems. Details of this new apparatus and the results of our experimental study and clinical application will soon follow this paper.
