Primary and acquired drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains in western region of Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.
Drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains prevalent in the Western Region of Libyan Arab Jamahiriya was studied for the years 1984, 1985 and 1986 at the regional tuberculosis control centre at Gurgi, Tripoli. Records of resistance to streptomycin, isoniazid, ethambutol and rifampicin were analysed. Whereas primary drug resistance was observed in 5.1%, 19.5% and 3.8%, acquired drug resistance was found in 12.2%, 34.0% and 15.3% of the strains in 1984, 1985 and 1986 respectively. Only 3 out of 598 strains (1.2%) were found to show acquired resistance to rifampicin. No primary resistance to rifampicin was observed. The situation of drug resistance in pulmonary tuberculosis in the Jamahiriya is discussed.
Peak expiratory flow rates in Libyan adolescents.
Peak expiratory flow rates of 578 Libyan boys and 527 Libyan girls aged 12 to 21 years were determined. The prediction formulae that best describe the data are as follows: Boys: PEFR = 160 X Stature 1.87 Girls: PEFR = 130 X Stature2.44 Statistically significant correlations were found between peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and standing height, sitting height, body mass index, body surface area and age in both sexes. Stature (standing height) is marginally better as an index of body size in explaining the variability of the ventilatory capacity. The relationship between PEFR and age in girls appears to correlate with the relationship between PEFR and body mass index. The difference in the slope for girls when compared with that for boys is attributed to the obesity/over weight of the girls.
Conjugal motor neurone disease.
The occurrence of motor neurone disease (MND) in a Libyan couple who lived together for 40 years and in whom the disease developed within a 15-month period is reported. This is believed to be the second documentation of conjugal MND in the English literature.
Pterygium in a Libyan village.
The prevalence of pterygium was estimated in a Libyan village. There seems to be an association between pterygium and cicatricial trachoma, poor housing conditions and Herbert's Pits in this population.
[A 1-year study of the management of fetal breech presentation by monitoring follow-up during second-stage labor instead of using external version, x-ray pelvimetry and ultrasonic assessment of fetal weight].
The authors studied 246 parturients with breech presentation of the fetus. All women were examined by an obstetric monitor. Cesarean section was performed on 33 women/ = 13.41% of women with breech presentation). Perinatal morbidity and mortality were the same as those of women with vertex presentation. The frequency of cesarean section was 11.98% of multiparas and 31.57% of nulliparas. According to the authors careful observation of advancement of delivery as well as the state of the fetus (by an obstetric monitor) could lead to management of delivery with breech presentation just as that of vertex presentation. This management of breech presentations should reduce the fear of delivery, which is observed in most parturients with breech presentation of the fetus.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
There has been significant advance in our understanding of CJD and similar spongiform encephalopathies in recent years. The range in clinical expression of the disease is better appreciated, and the existence of "atypical" cases of CJD is increasingly recognized. New ideas about the possible modes of natural transmission have been derived from case-control studies in different parts of the world.
