Campylobacteriosis in an aborted equine fetus.
Abortion caused by Campylobacter fetus subsp fetus was diagnosed in a 7-month-old equine fetus. The fetus was small for its gestational age. Macroscopically, the proximal portion of the small intestine was hemorrhagic and its wall was thick. Histologically, the Brunner glands were distended with neutrophils, and the submucosa was thick, owing to fluid accumulation and/or cellular infiltrates. Curved bacteria were observed in the Brunner glands and intestinal glands. Campylobacter fetus subsp fetus was isolated from stomach contents, liver, and lungs, and was detected by dark-field microscopic examination of ocular fluid and stomach contents. Placenta was not available for examination.

Left ventricular hypertrophy in chronically hypertensive ponies.
Systemic arterial hypertension is associated with equine laminitis, a disease precipitated by gross over-ingestion of carbohydrates. We examined the hearts from nine chronically hypertensive (161 +/- 11/99 +/- 6 mmHg) laminitic ponies and nine normotensive (128 +/- 2/76 +/- 3 mmHg) ponies postmortem for signs of left ventricular hypertrophy. The hypertensive ponies had hearts which were significantly larger (7.77 +/- 0.26 g/kg bodyweight (BW) vs. 5.67 +/- 0.22 g/kg BW), as well as increased combined left ventricle and septum weight (4.99 +/- 0.21 g/kg BW vs. 3.67 +/- 0.20 g/kg BW) and left ventricular free wall weight (3.71 +/- 0.23 g/kg BW vs. 2.62 +/- 0.19 g/kg BW) (p less than 0.05). The right ventricular free wall weights were not significantly different. Mean left ventricular free wall thickness was increased significantly in the hypertensive ponies compared to the normotensive group (26.1 +/- 0.4 mm and 22.5 +/- 1 mm, respectively), but neither septal nor right ventricular free wall thickness was different. These findings demonstrate that left ventricular hypertrophy accompanies equine laminitis-induced hypertension.

Megacolon with myenteric hypoganglionosis in a foal.
A 6-month-old Clydesdale filly had chronic abdominal distention and intermittent febrile episodes. Abdominal surgery revealed impaction of the right dorsal colon, which was relieved by evacuation of contents through an enterotomy. Four days after surgery, abdominal distention recurred and progressed. The filly was euthanatized. Necropsy revealed the right dorsal colon to be markedly distended with digesta. Microscopically, there was a marked reduction in myenteric ganglion cells in the right dorsal colon and cecum and mild to moderate reduction of myenteric ganglion cells in the left ventral and transverse colon.
Experimentally induced phenylbutazone toxicosis in ponies: description of the syndrome and its prevention with synthetic prostaglandin E2.
Phenylbutazone (PBZ) toxicosis was induced in 9 ponies to further define the clinical and pathologic changes occurring with this syndrome. Six additional ponies were treated with PBZ and a synthetic prostaglandin E2 to determine the role of prostaglandins in the pathogenesis of PBZ toxicosis. Ponies given only PBZ exhibited CNS depression, anorexia, weight loss, diarrhea, cyanotic mucous membranes, and oral ulcers. Total serum protein concentration gradually decreased during the 10-day treatment period. Marked mucosal atrophy, focal erosions, and ulcers characterized the lesions in the alimentary tract. Ponies given PBZ and prostaglandin E2 remained clinically healthy and did not develop hypoproteinemia or mucosal atrophy. A few erosions were seen, but ulcers were not observed. The results of the present study indicate that mucosal atrophy is a characteristic lesion of PBZ toxicosis. It is also evident that inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis has an important role in the development of this syndrome.
Ultrasonographic diagnosis of aorto-iliac thrombosis.
A linear array 5 mHz ultrasonic scanner was used to diagnose aorto-iliac thrombosis in a 3 year old Standardbred gelding. There are no reports in the literature of utilization of ultrasonography for visualization of an aortic thrombus. The technique is fairly non-invasive, requiring only a rectal examination with a linear array probe. Arteriography is the only other method described for actual visualization of a thrombus. This procedure is technically difficult and highly invasive.

Some aspects of twin-gestation in the mare.
A study has been made of 44 cases of twin pregnancy in mares. The fetuses, foals, fetal membranes and blood groups of parents and foals were examined in order to determine the incidence of chorio-vascular anastomosis, blood chimaerism and freemartinism. All of the twins proved to be dizygotic and 33 of the 34 pregnancies were bicornual. Fusion of the chorion was seen in 14 of 22 placentas and macroscopic choriovascular bridges were observed in five of these, although blood chimaerism was diagnosed in 11 of 25 cases (44 per cent) examined. This would indicate a high incidence of microchoriovascular anastomosis. The fetal female genital organs of four heterosexual twins were found to be anatomically and histologically normal at autopsy despite the existence of blood chimaerism. Five other sexvalley mature mares born as heterosexual twins with chimaerism all had normal genital organs and estrus cycles and one of these has since become pregnant. The important interspecies differences with respect to the incidence and degree of choriovascular anastomosis and freemartinism are stressed and suggestions for a plausible explanation were advanced.
