Etiopathogenesis of parafunctional habits of the stomatognathic system.

A broad consensus does exist among main authors on the importance of parafunctional habits in the etiopathogenesis of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Mechanisms through which an intense parafunctional activity determined a pathological effect on the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and their related structures have still not been definitively clarified; nevertheless, before investigating those mechanisms, it's useful to study predisposing, triggering and/or worsening factors of parafunctions themselves. At present the theory, once widely accepted, according to which occlusal interferences can trigger a muscular hyperactivity through the activation of periodontal receptors, has lost a lot of credit. Recently, the hypothesis that bruxism and other parafunctions have a central etiology has become more and more accepted. In such a context, the role of the psychic component assumes a strong relevance, particularly for its relation with the limbic system, which is the part of the central nervous system (CNS) that regulates emotions. Such a hypothesis is confirmed by clinical practice, but it doesn't explain why some patients have reported a worsening of parafunctional activities after occlusal adjustment. The aim of this study is to investigate this issue through a critical review of the literature, indicating how the 2 theories might be complementary for the development and worsening of a parafunctional habit. From this review, despite the number of clinical opinions, there emerges a lack of methodologically appropriate associative works and controlled clinical trials which consent to clarify the effective importance of psychic and/or occlusal factors in the etiopathogenesis of parafunctional habits.

Acculturation process and its effects on dietary habits, nutritional behavior and body-image in adolescents.

Previous studies have indicated that the acculturation process may contribute to psychosocial and health problems among immigrants through the mediation of acculturation stress. This study focuses on adolescents with immigrant background permanently settled in the Croatian region of Dalmatia and the influences of the acculturation process on their dietary habits, nutritional behavior and perceived body-image. The survey was conducted on the total sample of 510 adolescents (aged 14-19) including 52 first generation and 248 second generation immigrants. The analysis included dietary habits and questions of restrictive diet as indicators of unhealthy influence on physical health. Psychological factors (stress and self-esteem) have been found to be associated with dietary habits, diet behavior and dissatisfaction with body-image among adolescents with significant differences by immigrant status. Immigrant status is viewed as a risk factor for psychological distress and unhealthy dieting behavior. Research stresses the need to study the interaction between acculturation and health not only from an individual perspective, but also from the broader socio-ecological context of population subgroups.

TV viewing habits and body mass index among South Carolina Head Start children.

The present study tested the hypothesis that TV viewing habits and overweight would be associated among 4-year-old children. A convenience sample of Head Start students was enrolled (N=148). Parents were asked to complete a questionnaire on their children's TV viewing habits for a typical weekday, and for Saturday and Sunday. Height and weight of the children were assessed by the authors. As BMI increased, average hours of TV viewing increased slightly. Nearly 97% of children whose BMI was greater than the 95th percentile for age and sex watched more than one hour of TV, compared with less than 80% of children below the 95th percentile (chi2=6.0, P=.01). The present study suggests that TV viewing habits relate to BMI among 4-year old children to approximately the same degree as in older cohorts.

Smoking habit and labial microcirculation.

Smoking habit is an important risk factor in oral diseases. In the last years, many studies tried to evaluate smoking effects on the microcirculation. It had never been used such a simple not invasive technique, like the video-capillaroscopic one. The aim of the research is to analyse "in vivo", the microcirculation labial characteristics, and to evaluate the smoking effects by means of computerised videocapillaroscopy techniques. 35 healthy no-smoker patients and 35 healthy smoker patients were examined. The characteristics of the microcirculation in the areas of labial mucous were examined using computerised videomicroscopic techniques. For each patient we evaluated the visibility, the course, the tortuosity and any images characteristic of capillary loops, besides the possible presence of microhaemorrhages, the average calibre of capillary loops and the number of capillary loops visible per square millimetre. The investigation was non invasive and repeatable for each patient. In both groups the investigation of labial mucous revealed a course of capillary loops parallel to the surface. In smoker patients, it was possible to underline capillaries of a smaller calibre (P<.001), and a higher number of detectable capillaries compared with no-smoker patients (P<.001). We observed an important correlation between the capillary tortuosity and the smoking habit (P<.001). Our research highlighted, that today it is possible to carry out a capillaroscopic investigation of labial mucous in a simple and reliable way. Furthermore, smoking habit represents a real risk factor of oral disease, greatly affecting the microcirculation.

Sociodemographic differences in dietary habits in a population-based sample of elderly subjects: the 3C study.

PURPOSE: Diet plays an important role in maintaining quality of life in ageing and can be influenced by sociodemographic factors. We aimed to describe dietary habits in a large population-based sample of elderly people and to explore how they may vary according to sex, age, educational level and lifestyle. METHODS: 9250 community dwellers aged 65 years and over recruited in three French cities were interviewed about their food habits with a brief frequency questionnaire. For each food considered, the subjects were classified as occasional or regular consumers. Quantities of alcoholic beverages consumed daily were also assessed. Dietary habits were compared for men and women separately according each sociodemographic factor. RESULTS: Women were characterized by a more regular consumption of fruit and vegetables and drunk fewer alcoholic beverages. Older subjects ate meat, fish, cereals, raw vegetables and pulses less regularly. The proportion of regular consumers of fish, raw fruit, raw vegetables and cooked fruit or vegetables and the quantity of alcohol consumed increased with educational level. Subjects living alone were less regular consumers of almost all foods. DISCUSSION: The results show that even in a sub-population of elderly people, dietary patterns can vary greatly according to several factors. Identifying such factors is of value for future analytic studies on nutrition and health in the elderly. In view of dietary recommendations advising a high consumption of fruit and vegetables, subjects living alone and people with a low educational level are particularly at risk and should be encouraged to eat more balanced meals.

Classification system for toothbrushing habits.

AIM: For orthodontic patients, optimal oral prophylaxis is essential. In this article, a classification system for toothbrushing habits, according to three criteria that can indicate the direction of guidance for primary school children, is discussed. METHODS: Toothbrushing habits of children are evaluated according to three criteria (frequency of toothbrushing, attitude toward voluntary toothbrushing, and thoroughness of toothbrushing). Computer-generated classification graphs, performance tables, and component tables were obtained based on the responses to 26 questions. RESULTS: The children can be classified into different types, according to the three criteria, on the graphs. Performance tables indicate the items that require guidance, while component tables indicate the priority of the items that require guidance. CONCLUSION: The quantitative assessment of toothbrushing habits for children is possible, using this new classification system.

Self-reported oral health, dental care habits and cardiovascular disease in an adult Swedish population.

PURPOSE: The primary aim was to investigate the oral health; oral care habits and the ability of the participants to afford dental care in an adult Swedish population. A secondary aim was to study whether there is a relationship between dental care habits, self-reported oral health status and cardiovascular disease (CVD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants answered a questionnaire about the frequencies of diseases, the need for treatment and the effects of socio-economic factors on oral care habits. A questionnaire was mailed to 893 persons in 3 age groups (20-29, 50-59, and 75-84 years of age) of whom 723 replied (81.0%). RESULTS: The answers indicated that 16% had experienced dental problems without seeking help and more then 10% reported problems with chewing. In the group as a whole, 31.5% had sought no dental treatment, partly for financial reasons. When using a logistic regression model, as regards bleeding gums as a risk indicator of CVD, correcting for diabetes, education, gender, age and tobacco use, the estimated odds ratio (OR) was 1.70 (p = 0.05). The OR for those 50 years old or more was 1.79 (p = 0.05). For the oldest group alone, the OR was 2.69 (p = 0.05). The model showed an increased risk of CVD among those who had problems with their teeth without seeking help, OR 2.45 (p = 0.05). CONCLUSION: The study indicates that a large proportion of those answering the questionnaire had experienced dental problems without seeking help, partly for financial reasons. This group is more likely to have CVD and bleeding gums. It shows a relationship between the presence of bleeding gums and CVD, especially amongst the oldest participants.

[Smoking habits among medical students in Bergen].

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to examine smoking habits among the students in a Norwegian medical school and to assess how smoking habits vary by sex, age and class seniority. METHOD: The study was performed by handing out to all students during plenum lectures a questionnaire on smoking habits. Students not present were sent the questionnaire by mail. RESULTS: 866 of 894 students (97%) responded; 8 questionnaires were excluded from the study. Among the remaining 858 students, 53% stated that they had never smoked, 14 % were ex-smokers, 28% were occasional smokers, and 5% reported that they smoked regularly. No differences were found with respect to age, sex and seniority. INTERPRETATION: The percentage of daily smokers among medical students was low, but the high percentage of occasional smokers may indicate that the prevalence of smoking among Norwegian doctors could increase.

[Dietary habits, attitudes toward weight control, and subjective symptoms of fatigue in young women in Japan].

PURPOSE: This paper describes dietary habits and attitudes toward body weight control of college women in Japan and examines their relationships with subjective symptoms of fatigue. We also discuss strategies to promote better diets among young adults. METHODS: Self-reported questionnaires were distributed to 286 young women aged 18 to 25 years; 275 of these were analyzed. RESULTS: The study found that more than half of the women were concerned about nutritional balance and calories. Yet thirty percent ate "a single-item meal (i.e., bread, rice bowl, noodles) two or more times a day," while roughly one half skipped breakfast "sometimes" or "always." A majority ate vegetables "almost never" and consumed instant foods, confectionery, or sugary drinks "almost daily." Subjective symptoms of fatigue were significantly correlated with a higher frequency of irregular meal-taking, single-item meals, between-meal snacking, missed breakfasts, non-vegetable diets, non-fruit diets, and instant foods and confectionery. About sixty percent of the women in the study considered their bodies to be "slightly fat or overweight" while 79.5% indicated a desire to "lose weight". On average, the participants' ideal BMI was 18.7 (+/- 1.2) while the ideal body weight was 47.2 (+/- 4.1) kg, approximately 4 kg under actual average body weight. Subjective symptoms of fatigue were stronger among women who considered themselves "slightly fat or overweight". Likewise, symptoms were stronger to the extent that a participant's ideal BMI was below her actual BMI. CONCLUSION: Many women in this study desired to lose weight although they were not overweight by objective measures. The study suggests that subjective symptoms of fatigue are not the result of individual dietary habits, but rather of a lifestyle that reach to series of dietary habits connected to subjective symptoms of fatigue. The study also confirms the importance both of encouraging young women not just to eat well but to lead lifestyles in which they do not skip meals and of efforts that might help them to evaluate their own bodies more objectively.

[Dietary habits, life styles and respiratory symptoms in childhood].

Asthma and obesity in children are common chronic conditions and both disorders have been increasing in the last 2 to 3 decades. The changes of dietary habits and a sedentary life style could have played a role in increasing the prevalence of both conditions. The aim of this report is to analyse the relation between some respiratory conditions (current wheezing, asthma and chronic cough) with dietary habits, body mass index (BMI), the physical activity and the habit to watch television. A total of 19,995 children (10,294 males and 9701 females) were investigated. Current wheezing is associated with increased BMI (V quintile OR=1.65), TV watching (more than 5 h/day OR=1.53), adding salt to the foods (OR=2.45), and fizzy drink (5 times or more per week OR=1.31). Children who often eat tomatoes, fruits, cooked vegetables and citrus fruits have a lower risk of current wheeze. The pattern of association is similar for asthma. High BMI, TV watching, adding salt to foods, and fizzy drink are risk factors for chronic cough. An increased BMI and TV watching are strongly related to respiratory symptoms. Our data confirm that dietary factors such as salt, vegetables and fruits are associated with the prevalence of respiratory symptoms in children.

[An epidemiologic study of bowel habit in adult non-patient population in Beijing area].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the bowel habit and its influencing factors in the adult non-patient population in Beijing area. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted among 2486 adult permanent residents in Beijing area by randomized stratified sampling. The bowel habit (defecation frequency, characters of feces, time of defecation, and abnormal defecation) of the 1 952 non-patients among them were further investigated. The non-patient subject should fulfil the following criteria: (1) without gastrointestinal and hepatic organic diseases; (2) without metabolic disease affecting the motility of the gastrointestinal tract, such as diabetes mellitus and thyroid hyperfunction; (3) without irritable bowel syndrome which fits in the Manning criteria; and (4) considering oneself as having normal bowel habits. RESULTS: 84.17% of the non-patient interviewees defecated once per day with the mean defecation frequency of 7.09 times per week. 89.86% of the interviewees had formed or soft stool. 93.08% of the non-patients defecated formed or soft stool 3 to 21 times per week. No evidence showed that the frequency of defecation and character of feces were related to age and sex. 77% of them defecated in the morning. The prevalence rates of constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain associated with defecation were 3.74%, 1.08%, and 7.38% respectively. CONCLUSION: The defecation frequency of adult nonpatient population in Beijing area is almost identical to that reported in the west. 93.08% of the non-patient subjects have normal defecation patterns. It is necessary to define the judgement criteria for constipation and diarrhea for Chinese based on their defecation patterns.

[How can women with chronic muscular pain change their bodily habits?].

BACKGROUND: Each person develops their own posture and patterns of movement; our bodies are marked by the life we live. Our ways of being imply that the body is used and strained in different ways, and these habits are decisive for what kind of functional problems we may develop. A group-based treatment programme for women with chronic muscular pain includes movement training and group discussions once a week over the course of ten months, aimed at changing straining bodily habits. The study explores what the participants appreciate as meaningful and beneficial effects of this programme. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A treatment group of ten women with long-lasting chronic muscular pain was organised at the start of the 21st century. Seven of them completed the programme. Transcriptions from individual interviews with the participants were analysed using a phenomenological analysis. RESULTS: The participants made new bodily experiences, changed their bodily habits and developed strategies for handling stress and pain in daily life. INTERPRETATION: Group treatment may be a beneficial offer in primary care to women with chronic muscular pain.

Oral hygiene habits and oral health awareness among urban Saudi Arabians.

PURPOSE: To analyze prevailing oral hygiene practices and oral health awareness among urban Saudi Arabians in relation to age, gender and educational level. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Structured interviews with 1155 regular patients at two centers providing dental care for university and military staff and their families, respectively, in the city of Makkah. Consecutive patients were stratified by gender and age, into 6 categories from 10 to 60 years, with 50 male or female subjects in each group at each center. Oral hygiene habits and attitudes to oral health were correlated with age, gender and educational levels, using ANOVA. RESULTS: For the majority (> 88%) oral hygiene routines were introduced very late, after the age of 7 yr. Habits were strongly correlated to the level of education (p < 0.001); subjects with less education favored the miswak. Among the better educated, toothbrushing started earlier (p < 0.001). Regular miswak use was more frequent in older age groups (p < 0.001). Females used a toothbrush more often than males (p < 0.001), and miswak use by women was less frequent than by men (p < 0.001). Despite the availability of free dental care at the public health centers, 89% of the participants at the military center sought only emergency care, in contrast to 54% at the university center. CONCLUSIONS: Among urban Saudi Arabians, oral hygiene routines are introduced relatively late in life and knowledge and awareness of oral health is very low. There are pronounced variations in oral hygiene habits, related mainly to age and educational levels. Such factors should be taken into account when planning oral health strategies.

[The role of motivation in the performance of a conditioned switching-over of the maze habit in ants Myrmica rubra after a change in the quality of the food reinforcement].

Active foragers Myrmica rubra were trained in a maze under conditions of different levels of colony need in food with carbohydrate (sugar syrup) or protein (ants Lasius niger pupae) reinforcement. Acquisition of the maze habit was better under conditions of reinforcement with pupae, especially by its time indices. Ants were able to modify the acquired habit when the reinforcement quality was changed. It was shown that learning was possible only when the colony and after a change pupae for the syrup was "hungry". Under these conditions, after a change of the syrup for pupae or visa versa the previously acquired optimum habit was transferred. Several hours later, with satiation of the colony, food reactions learned with protein reinforcement switched-over to "stochastic" non-optimized behavior with the dominance of exploratory reactions. Thus, it was shown that higher social insects ants were capable for conditioned switching-over. Different forms of this phenomenon depended on the level of the colony need in food and, consequently, on the level of the social food motivation of foragers ants.

[The assessment of nutritional habits of men with coronary heart disease over 60 years old].

The objective of the research was to assess nutritional habits of men with coronary heart disease aged > 60 years old (n=132), stratified by educational level. The examined men were divided into 3 groups: group I--men with primary education (n=33), group II--men with secondary education (n=42), group III--men with higher education (n=57). Nutritional habits of examined men were assessed on the basis of a 3-day food record. The research showed that nutritional habits of examined men were characterized by too much saturated fat and cholesterol and were in accordance to hipolipemic diet. Educational level did not significantly influence the parameters of the subjects' diet, but had an impact on the structure of the intake of selected products.

Dietary habits and folate status in women of childbearing age in Croatia.

Folic acid and folates have an important role in prevention of neural tube defect that appears in the first weeks of pregnancy, when women are still not aware of their pregnancy, especially when pregnancy is not planned. Since ensuring sufficient quantities of folates and folic acid in this period is essential, dietary habits of childbearing age women are very important. In line with that the intake of folates and folic acid in nutrition of women age group 20-30 years is examined, as well as the frequency of consumption of foodstuffs rich in vitamins and folic acid supplements. Values of folates in serum are presented, dependent on their nutritional habits. Obtained results indicate that in spite of inadequate intake of folates and folic acid from foodstuffs, clinical deficit is not recorded, which is the result of frequent consumption of dietary supplements. In accordance with these dietary habits, differences in the folates status of examinees were observed.

[Characteristics of smoking habits in participants of the National Program of Early Detection and Prevention of COPD in the years 2000-2002].

UNLABELLED: We aimed to characterize smoking habits in participants of the large national screening program for COPD run in Poland in the years 2000-2002. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The program was addressed to smokers aged 40+ years with a smoking history of 10+ packyears. Participants were invited by advertisements in local mass media to attend local outpatient chest clinic located through all over the country for free spirometry. Investigations included history of smoking habit based on questionnaire, Fagerström test for nicotine dependence (FTND) and spirometry. RESULTS: During three years 91859 subjects were screened, of whom 81091 (88.3%) were current and former smokers. In male smokers (56.6%), mean age 54.2 +/- 11.4 yr, mean exposure to tobacco smoke was 32.8 +/- 18.7 packyears. There were 33289 (61.7%) of current smokers and 14905 (30,9%) of ex-smokers. In female smokers (41.3%), mean age 51.8 +/- 10.0 yr, mean exposure to tobacco smoke was 22.9 +/- 14.8 packyears. There were 22291 (70.7%) of current smokers and 9226 (29.3%) of ex-smokers. Males started to smoke at younger age of (19.2 +/- 4.6 yr) than females (21.8 +/- 5.9 yr). Males were more nicotine dependent than females, 4.93 +/- 2.4 vs 4.48 +/- 2.5 FTND points, respectively. Nicotine dependence was related to number of packyears (r=0.5, p<0.001). Airflow limitation was more prevalent in ex-smokers (23.9%) than in current smokers (19.6%). CONCLUSIONS: We found differences in smoking habits between males and females. Females started smoking at later age and smoked less than males. Nicotine dependence was related to cumulative exposure to tobacco smoke. Frequency of airflow limitation was related to number of packyears.
