[Epithelial tumors of the minor salivary glands in the lips and cheeks].

Difficulties in the clinical diagnosis of tumors of minor salivary glands of the lips and cheeks are discussed on the basis of results of examination of 52 patients with such tumors and comparison of the diagnosis of this condition and of identical tumors of the large salivary glands. Discrepancies between the clinical and pathoanatomical diagnosis are analyzed. Clinical characteristics helpful in the diagnosis of the condition are presented.

L-arginine dilates cheek pouch arterioles in hamsters with hereditary cardiomyopathy but not in controls.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether suffusion of L-arginine alone induces vasodilation in the cheek pouch of hamsters with hereditary cardiomyopathy in comparison with controls, and whether these effects are mediated by the L-arginine/nitric oxide biosynthetic pathway. Using intravital microscopy, we found that suffusion of L-arginine for 20 minutes induced a significant, stereospecific concentration-dependent vasodilation in hamsters with hereditary cardiomyopathy but not in controls (p < 0.05). These responses were abrogated by suffusion of the nitric synthase inhibitor NG-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) but not by suffusion of D-NAME. Suffusion of nitroglycerin, a nitric oxide donor, induced significant vasodilation of similar magnitude in both groups (p < 0.05). L-NAME had no significant effects on nitroglycerin-induced responses in both groups. We conclude that direct application of L-arginine alone to the peripheral microcirculation in cardiomyopathy induces significant vasodilation that is mediated, most likely, via a nitric oxide-dependent mechanisms(s). We suggest that a reversible, L-arginine-responsive impairment in the constitutive L-arginine/nitric oxide biosynthetic pathway is present in the peripheral microcirculation in cardiomyopathy.

Merkel cell-neurite complexes in touch domes of hamster cheek pouch.

Morphological study has been done in touch domes of hamster cheek pouch as a preparation for further electrophysiological study. The touch domes were examined by light and electron microscopy. There were one or two primary ridges (epithelial ridges) in the center of the touch dome, and each dome was supplied by one to three nerve fibres. Tactile cells (Merkel cells) were localized within primary ridges of touch domes and Merkel cell-neurite complexes were observed in every one. Since Merkel cell-neurite complexes are slow adapting mechanoreceptors, these results suggest that they might be involved in touch sensation.

Cutaneous sinus tracts of dental origin to the chin and cheek: case reports.

Cutaneous sinus tract of dental origin is the most common among the many types of sinus tracts that are formed on the face and neck. Because these lesions are often diagnosed incorrectly, they are also treated ineffectively. Cases of cutaneous sinus tract on the chin and cheek are presented, and a simple way to diagnose this lesion is described. In both patients, the lesion was completely resolved following nonsurgical endodontic therapy.

[A case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the cheek in adolescence. Its cytological diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration via the gingival fornix].

The authors present a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the cheek in a young patient. The histological diagnosis, on the tumoral mass, was preceded by cytological researches with fine needle aspiration biopsy, carried out on the gingival fornix. The cytology, by immunocytochemical techniques, made possible the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma. Therefore the authors stress the high capacity of these cytochemical and immunocytochemical methods to demonstrate, not in a invasive way, the small round cell tumors of the skull and the neck in the youngs. This early diagnosis may orient the clinical and therapeutic management of the case.

Chemical carcinogenesis in the hamster cheek pouch. Influence of inhibitors and inducers of alkaline phosphatase.

Squamous cell carcinomas were induced in the hamster cheek pouch with 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene. The process of carcinogenesis was inhibited by phenylphosphate, an inducer of alkaline phosphatase. Orthophosphate and l-phenylalanine, which inhibit alkaline phosphatase, had a promoting effect on tumor formation. The results are in accordance with those of previous studies on the effect of inducers of alkaline phosphatase on chemical carcinogenesis. The effect of the studied substances on carcinogenesis was apparently unrelated to the presence of phenyl or phosphate groups or of steroid rings. The tumor inhibition or promotion seemed to be related to the potential of the tested substances to induce or inhibit alkaline phosphatase activity.

[The ontogeny of additional saccules in the orifice of the cheek pouches in hamsters (Phodopus campbelli Thomas, 1905 and Phodopus sungorus Pallas, 1773): a morphometric analysis].

Time changes in functional activity of the recently described additional sacs in the orifice of cheek pouches (AS) has been studied in one-month-old and adult Phodopus sungorus and P. campbelli. The most intense AS growth and increase in their secretory activity falls on the second decade of the first month. It coincide with transition to their own feeding by coarse crust. Although there is no sexual dimorphism in the AS mass or the amount of their secret, time pattern of growth is different in males and females. Stabilization of the main indices of AS functional activity, their relative mass and amount of secret, at the adult level occurs in females earlier than in males. Adults of both species do not show sexual dimorphism by the both studied indices, but breeding females have both absolute and relative mass of AS and its secret significantly increased. As a whole the obtained data agree well with the previous studies (Vasil'eva, Feoktistova, 1993) that have demonstrated the importance of AS secret in survival, normal growth and development during the first month of P. campbelli. The described time pattern of the AS activity in ontogenesis seem to reflect the real need in the secret at the early age in small hamsters, and the increased AS activity in lactating females can be considered as a functional adaptation that compensate the secret deficit.

Biological zero of laser Doppler fluxmetry: microcirculatory correlates in the hamster cheek pouch during flow and no flow conditions.

The microcirculation of the hamster cheek pouch was visualized by the intravenous injection of FITC-dextran 150,000 during normal flow conditions and when flow was interrupted by clamping proximal to the pouch. Laser Doppler fluxmetry (LDF) was used to evaluate flow during control, 30 min of occlusion and after reperfusion. Intravital video recordings of the microcirculation during occlusion show that blood moves between the different arteriolar segments after occlusion and during the whole period of no flow. This motion was oscillatory in nature, had maximum velocity of order of 30 microns sec-1, and was related to progressive decrease of arteriolar diameter. The LDF output was in the range of 60-100 AU during control. This value fell in the range of 5-25 +/- 15% AU during occlusion and was assumed to constitute the biological zero for this system. The variability of the LDF signals was characterized by the autoregressive modeling power spectrum technique. The power spectra during control, occlusion, and reperfusion were similar, suggesting that motion of blood not related to perfusion or blood flow is present in all conditions. These findings suggest that the biological zero arises from signals that are not flow related and that it should be subtracted from the flow signal.

Atypical fibroxanthoma of the cheek: a case report.

Atypical fibroxanthoma is a cutaneous soft tissue tumor that may mimic squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma on clinical and histologic examination. Immunohistochemical stains for cytokeratin, S100 protein, and vimentin may be helpful in differentiating atypical fibroxanthoma from the latter two diagnoses. We report a patient with atypical fibroxanthoma of the cheek who underwent successful local excision. The clinical and laboratory features of this neoplasm are reviewed.

[Solitary fibrous tumor of the cheek].

INTRODUCTION: A case of solitary fibrous tumour of the cheek is described. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The lesion is documented by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The patient is a 55 year old man and the tumor is constituted by a nodule measuring 2 cm in its greatest axis. The neoplastic cells are spindle shaped and arranged in a storiform pattern. They stain for vimentin and CD34. DISCUSSION: The differential diagnosis from morphologically similar lesions, such as leiomyoma, schwannoma, benign fibrohistiocytoma and myoepithelioma of the salivary glands was taken in consideration. The present case, together with those reported in the literature, indicates that solitary fibrous tumours arise in any site of the organism.

[Venous angiodysplasias of the cheek. The problems of therapy].

Four cases of cheek venous malformations observed and treated in different ways are discussed by the authors. In this region angiodysplasias may cause chewing problems or an increased haemorrhagic risk during dental surgery. The therapeutic troubles are due to the muscular connections where there are many recesses and infiltration ways close to the motor and sensitive nervous trunk. Aesthetic restrictions may oblige to a minor operation or partial excision. Particular care must be taken to the lesion access. In this experience two patients have been surgically treated with venous angioma differentiation: one of these with sclerotherapy of the residual angioma As the extent of the lesion caused reconstructing problems, one patient underwent plastic surgery. The other patient was treated with sclerotherapy. After two years the patients surgically treated recovered while the patients treated with sclerotherapy turned out to be asymptomatic. In conclusion, this experience and the literature review show that the correct diagnosis and a right sclerotherapy or surgery, preventive if necessary, allow any dental surgery in due time for dental diseases without any higher haemorrhagic risk.

Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia and Ollier's disease: combined transfrontal and transfacial resection using the nasal-cheek flap.

Fibrous dysplasia and Ollier's disease (skeletal chondromatosis) are bone lesions that result from disorders occurring during ossification. Here we report on a patient suffering from Ollier's disease in whom polyostotic fibrous dysplasia was detected. The main problem for this 20-year-old man was a nasoethmoidorbital cartilaginous mass causing nasal obstruction, nonreducible eye proptosis, and sleep apnea. The lesion was approached by means of a combined route, ie, transfrontally and transfacially (nasal-cheek flap). The possible pathogenetic links existing between the two lesions and the problems involved in surgical treatment are discussed.

Adenovirus-mediated manganese superoxide dismutase gene transfer to hamster cheek pouch carcinoma cells.

As a first step in evaluating the tumor suppressor activity of the manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) gene on established tumors in vivo, we used adenovirus-mediated gene transfer as a means of delivering the MnSOD cDNA to hamster cheek pouch carcinoma (HCPC-1) cells in vitro. HCPC-1 cells were transduced with the adenovirus-MnSOD construct (AdMnSOD) at multiplicities of infectivity (MOI) of 0, 10, 25, 50, 100, 150, and 200 MOI or with the adenovirus-LacZ reporter gene construct (AdLacZ) at 100 MOI. Dose-dependent increases in MnSOD immunoreactivity were seen on Western blotting and indirect immunofluorescence microscopy with increasing AdMnSOD titers. Maximal immunoreactivity was observed at 100 MOI AdMnSOD with both techniques. Moreover, we observed a concomitant 6-7-fold increase in MnSOD activity compared with parental cell levels that also peaked at 100 MOI AdMnSOD. To determine the effect of transgene-expressed MnSOD on tumor cell behavior, we examined cell growth, plating efficiency, and anchorage-dependent growth in soft agar. Cell number measured on day 13 decreased approximately 50% with 100 MOI AdMnSOD (P < 0.05) compared with parental cells. Moreover, cell doubling time increased from 38 to 44 h with 100 MOI AdMnSOD. Plating efficiency and cell growth in soft agar decreased approximately two-thirds with 100 MOI AdMnSOD (P < 0.001). These assays of the transformed phenotype in vitro all appeared to show maximal effect with 100 MOI AdMnSOD. As tumor growth in vivo is most predictable by a combination of these in vitro data, our results suggest that if MnSOD can be effectively delivered to a tumor in vivo using the adenovirus paradigm, effective tumor growth suppression can be observed.

Antitumor activity of TP3(anti-p80)-pokeweed antiviral protein immunotoxin in hamster cheek pouch and severe combined immunodeficient mouse xenograft models of human osteosarcoma.

TP3-pokeweed antiviral protein (PAP) immunotoxin is directed against the p80 antigen on osteosarcoma cells. Previous studies have demonstrated that TP3-PAP kills clonogenic human osteosarcoma cells in vitro and shows significant antitumor activity in a murine soft tissue sarcoma model (P. M. Anderson, et al, Cancer Res., 55: 1321-1327, 1995.) In this study, we demonstrate that TP3-PAP elicits potent in vivo antitumor activity in a hamster cheek pouch model of human osteosarcoma. Furthermore, treatment with TP3-PAP at nontoxic dose levels significantly delayed the emergence and progression of leg tumors and markedly improved tumor-free survival in severe combined immunodeficient mice challenged with OHS human osteosarcoma cells. Thus, TP3-PAP may be useful in the treatment of poor risk osteosarcoma.

Changes of the cell cycle during carcinogenesis of hamster cheek pouch epithelium by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene.

Changes of the cell cycle during carcinogenesis of hamster cheek pouch epithelium were studied and it was demonstrated that in hyperplastic and neoplastic stages, the cell cycle time decreased to approximately 2/3 and 1/3 of the normal control, respectively. A nominal growth fraction was found to exceed unity in carcinogen-treated epithelium, whether hyperplastic or neoplastic. This result seems to indicate that a considerable number of cells in which DNA synthesis is stimulated by the carcinogen fail to enter mitosis. A possible implication of repair synthesis is also discussed.

CT of pilomatrixoma in the cheek.

Pilomatrixoma is an uncommon benign tumor arising from hair follicles. They occur most commonly in the head and neck region, and are usually found in girls during the first two decades of life. These tumors may contain calcification, which, when present, is helpful in suggesting the diagnosis. We present a classic case of pilomatrixoma in the cheek of a young woman. The tumor was documented on CT studies, which showed a subcutaneous, noninvasive mass with calcifications.

Seasonal variation in the feeding ecology of the grey-cheeked mangabey (Lophocebus albigena) in Cameroon.

Seasonal fluctuations in resource abundance often cause primates to change their feeding behavior and ecology. The objective of this study was to examine the response of a largely frugivorous monkey, the grey-cheeked mangabey (Lophocebus albigena), to seasonal variations in fruit abundance. We used 15-min scan sampling to quantify feeding, activity, and habitat use by monkeys between February and December 1998 in the Dja Reserve, Cameroon. L. albigena were found to have omnivorous feeding habits, consuming the fruits, seeds, leaves, and flowers of 132 plant species. Although monkeys fed from many plant species, only five plant species accounted for 45% of all feeding records. The number of feeding observations on a plant species was significantly correlated with its fruit production. L. albigena responded to fruit-lean periods by shifting from a diet dominated by fruit to one dominated by seeds, flowers, and young leaves. This diet shift coincided with greater use of swamp habitat and higher dietary diversity. L. albigena spent the greatest percentage of scan samples feeding and traveling, but activities varied significantly over the day. Individuals spent a significantly higher percentage of scan samples feeding during the fruit-rich season than in the fruit-lean season. Comparing our results to those of studies in Gabon and Uganda, we found that L. albigena differ across regions in the number of plant species they consume and time spent feeding. These differences may be a result of variations in tree diversity or the strength of seasonal fluctuations in resource abundance among sites.
