Auricular chromomycosis.

Chromomycosis, a relatively uncommon infection caused by a variety of dematiaceous fungi, eg, Phialophora verrucosa, Fonsecaea pedrosoi, Fonsecaea compacta, Cladosporium carrionii, Rhinocladiella aquaspersa, and Cladophialophora ajelloi, reflects a spectrum of disease ranging from an usually localized cutaneous form to rare visceral involvement. The cutaneous form has been reported to involve almost any site on the body surface. However, the lesions are usually confined to the extremities, face, or buttocks; other parts of the body are rarely affected. We report a case of chromomycosis that involved the auricle.

[Comparative study of Cladosporium isolated from various human lesions].

Two species C. carrionii and C. bantianum are important in medical mycology and are respectively the etiologic agents of chromomycosis and brain abcess. Other species such C. oxysporum and C. cladosporioides have been isolated from keratitis, further more the latter species has been isolated from a pulmonary ball. C. sphaerospermum has been recovered from nail scrapings. The role of C. herbarum, isolated from skin lesion is questionable.

[Five cases of chromomycosis in Gabon (author's transl)].

Five cases of chromomycosis were studied in the parasitological and mycological department of the National Laboratory and C.U.S.S. in Libreville (Gabon). Different types of lesions were observed which were more often maculous than verrucous. In one case, it was localized on the upper limb, and in four cases on the lower limbs. They all were diagnosed after a 2 to 25 years evolution. Fonsecaea pedrosoï was isolated in every case. Direct examinations always recovered the classical scleratic cells : in one case it was budding, and in two cases abundant mycelium was seen. No epidemiological argument can explain the geographical distribution.

Chromomycosis in Tanzania.

Sixteen cases of chromomycosis encountered over the period 1975-1980 are reported for the first time from Tanzania. In the tropics, in ulcerative or cauliflower-like lesions, especially of lower limbs the possibility of chromomycosis should be confirmed or ruled out by means of scrapings or biopsy.

[Cutaneous chromomycosis: therapy with intra-lesional amphotericin B injections].

Three different types of cutaneous chromomycosis, verrucous tumor type, eroded granuloma type and scaly erythematous plaque type, are reported. All these cases were successfully treated with intralesional injections of procaine-amphotericin B solution. This treatment for cutaneous chromomycosis seems to be favorable because of evident clinical efficiency without severe local or systemic side effects.
