The study of simple reaction to light and sound, and differential reaction was carried out on the group of VDT operators (n = 62) and the group of persons not involved in VDT operation (n = 38). Concentration ability was tested with Couve's test twice a day, i.e. before and after work. In the analysis of the results, reaction time and the accuracy of psychomotor trials measured by the number of errors committed were considered. None of the research models disclosed statistically significant differences between the average figures calculated for the VDT operators and the other group. The figures registered before and after work in each group were not significant either. Both group also failed to show the influence of age on the duration of reaction. The ability to concentrate was lower among operators than among those not involved in VDT operation, and it decreased after work, especially in the oldest subgroup.

With the coming into force of the new Austrian Employee Protection Act the issue of the so called "computer glasses" will also gain added importance in our country. Such glasses have been defined as vision aids to be exclusively used for the work on computer monitors and include single-vision glasses solely intended for reading computer screen, glasses with bifocal lenses for reading computer screen and hard-copy documents as well as those with varifocal lenses featuring a thickened central section. There is still a considerable controversy among those concerned as to who will bear the costs for such glasses--most likely it will be the employer. Prescription of such vision aids will be exclusively restricted to ophthalmologists, based on a thorough ophthalmological examination under adequate consideration of the specific working environment and the workplace requirements of the individual employee concerned.

Color-contrast optic filters are developed for improving the color discriminating capacity of eyes exposed to video display terminals. These filters are applied as a coating on correcting or common glasses. Effects of such eyeglasses on visual functions accommodation, frequency-contrast sensitivity, and critical frequency of flashes fusion (CFFF) were studied in 23 PC users with visual acuity of 1.0 with correction. Wearing of eyeglasses with filters promoted shifting of the most distant point of clear vision further and increased the accommodation volume, contrast sensitivity at the low and decreased it at the medium and high frequencies. CFFF was not changed. Wearing of eyeglasses with filters for 4 h of working at a display caused shifting of the nearest and most distant points of clear vision in comparison with the control group with the accommodation volume unchanged and preserved the high contrast sensitivity at the mean and low frequencies during the entire period of work. No changes in CFFF were noted. After 4 weeks of using eyeglasses with spectral filters, 86.9% of volunteers noted an improvement of visual working capacity and 13.1% considered there was no difference. Hence, eyeglasses with spectral filters are recommended as an ophthalmological measure preventing visual fatigue during long work with video displays.
Estimates of the prevalence of eye problems associated with using visual display terminals (VDTs) vary enormously depending on the sample tested and the research methods employed. However, most authors agree that eye problems are common among VDT users. In this paper, the relative contributions of the nature of VDT displays, workstation design, work-practices and optometric factors are discussed, drawing from the substantial body of literature which now exists on this subject.
The authors present methods of integral evaluation of symptoms for diagnosis of chronic visual, locomotor and nonspecific fatigue in workers. Questionnaires and algorithms to treat them are incorporated into the methods that are to be used in hygienic regulation of work, particularly, to reveal comparative significance of work factors--visual efforts, physical hardiness and nerve strain.
