Psychosocial correlates of severe temper tantrums.

Temper tantrums are common and distressing, but little epidemiological information is available about them. Attempts to identify psychosocial correlates of tantrums have used small samples and have not controlled for multiple concurrent behavior problems. We analyzed interviews from 502 English mothers of 3-year-olds. Tantrums were considered present if mothers reported tantrums three or more times a day or lasting 15 minutes or longer. Behavior problems were assessed using the Behavior Screening Questionnaire. Tantrums were reported in 6.8% of children, of whom 52% had multiple behavior problems. Factors independently associated with tantrums included maternal depression and irritability, low education, and use of corporal punishment, manual social class, marital stress, child care provided exclusively by the mother, and poor child health. Tantrums were not associated (at p less than 0.01) with gender, maternal employment, low social support, or single parenthood. Severe tantrums may indicate the presence of multiple behavior problems and psychosocial stressors.

The development of Onchocerca ochengi in surrogate temperate Simuliidae, with a note on the infective larva.

Laboratory reared nulliparous female flies of six temperate species of Simuliidae were examined for their susceptibility to infection with Onchocerca ochengi by intrathoracic injection of cryopreserved skin microfilariae obtained from cattle in Mali. Three species (S. equinum, S. ornatum and S. erythrocephalum) supported development to the infective stage, one species (S. variegatum) allowed partial development and the remaining two species (S. reptans and S. aureum) were insusceptible to infection. The most suitable surrogate vectors were S. equinum and S. ornatum which had survival rates of 44% and 49%, proportions of microfilariae developing to third stage larvae of 6.4% and 3%, and infection rates with infective larvae of 13.5% and 14% respectively. O. volvulus infective larvae, produced by intrathoracic microfilarial injection in S. ornatum, were 586-760 microns (mean 687 microns) long and were significantly shorter (p less than 0.02) than the O. ochengi infective larvae (645-880 microns, mean 756 microns). No constant differences in the posterior or anterior morphology, or in the acid phosphatase staining patterns between O. ochengi and O. volvulus, were seen. These results raise the possibility that the presence of O. ochengi in a population of infective larvae from vector flies in endemic onchocerciasis zones might be identifiable on the basis of their length alone.

[Structure and biological features of the temperate phage of Bacillus thuringiensis var. galleriae 69/9, sensitive to chloroform].

A new temperate bacteriophage designated Px1 has been isolated from the culture of Bacillus thuringiensis var. galleriae 69/6 producing enthobacterin. The bacteriophage belongs to morphological group B1 in accordance with the classification by D. Reanney and H. Ackerman. The bacteriophage head has an isometric multifaceted form with 40 nm diameter. The length of its noncontractile transversely lined tail is 130 nm. High sensitivity to chloroform is peculiar of the phage. The lytical specter of the phage Px1 has been studied. The phage is shown to be capable of efficient transduction of plasmids between the bacteria of Bacillus cereus group.

[Restriction map of the temperate phage E105 from the polylysogenic culture of Erwinia carotovora 268].

DNA structure of the temperate bacteriophage E105 from polylysogenic culture of Erwinia carotovora 268 has been studied. The viral 29.12-29.17 MD DNA has been shown to be linear and nonpermuted. The complete restriction map of the viral DNA has been constructed for MvaI and HpaI and partial for Eco31 restriction endonucleases based on the pair hydrolysis of the native DNA as well as its fragments. Altogether, 19 sites for restriction endonucleases have been localized on bacteriophage DNA.

[Interaction of heterologous bacteriophages: growth suppression of temperate PP56 phage of Pseudomonas putida by the transposable phage D3112 of Pseudomonas aeruginosa].

We have found an inhibiting effect of hybrid RP4::D3112 plasmid (where D3112 is represented as genome of a transposable phage specific for Pseudomonas aeruginosa) on the development of temperate P. putida phage PP56. The study of the effect has revealed a previously unknown locus (in the region 12-14.2 kb of the D3112 genome) which functions in the prophage state. The locus affects PP56 decreasing phage yield. Mutants of PP56 insensitive to inhibition were found.

[Restriction map of permuted DNA of Erwinia carotovora temperate bacteriophage 59].

The cyclic permutation and terminal redundancy were found in the genomes of Erwinia carotovora temperate bacteriophage 59 by electron microscopic studies. The headful mechanism for bacteriophage DNA cleavage and packaging during the phage morphogenesis was confirmed by the restriction analysis technique. Restriction map of the bacteriophage 59 DNA was constructed for restriction endonucleases BamHI, Bg1II, Eco31, Sa1I, SmaI, EcoRI.

Tinea versicolor of the face in black children in a temperate region.

Tinea versicolor is a common superficial fungal infection that typically affects young adults in warm, humid climates. We describe two young black children in the temperate northeastern Ohio area with tinea versicolor limited to the face. The occurrence of tinea versicolor on the face is unusual, as is its appearance before puberty. The mycologic and pathophysiologic characteristics of tinea versicolor infection are discussed, and several hypothesis are offered to explain the presence of tinea versicolor in these patients.

[Role of temperate phage in bacterial dissociation].

The analysis of literary and own data testifies that the dissociants may appear in bacteria population from spontaneous mutations and transfer of genetic material (conjugation, transformation, transduction). The phage conversion and different DNA reorganizations within a cell where prophage plays an active role, probably introduce the largest contribution into the dissociative transitions of variants which occur with high frequency (about 10(-2)-10(-4). The dissociation of various bacteria has been studied with different degree. The role of temperate phage has been shown in splitting of bacteria into variants in the genera Mycobacterium, Corynebacterium, some Bacillus, Clostridium, Staphylococcus, some enterobacteria, Yersinia, Vibrio Pseudomonas, Rhizobium, Nostoc; the participation of prophage in dissociation of bacteria of the genera Xanthomonas, Erwinia, Bacteroides is proposed. A method for obtaining the nondissociating S-variants for stability of biologically active substances synthesized by cells has been suggested.

[Isolation and comparative characteristics of 2 unrelated temperate phages of Pseudomonas putida PpG1].

Two temperate bacteriophages, PP56 and PP71, specific for bacteria of Pseudomonas putida strain PpG1 have been isolated for the first time. Characterization of the phages was performed. Both of them accomplish stable lysogenization of P. putida PpG1 cells. The phages are inducible. Several groups of clear plaque (c) mutants of PP56 and PP71 with altered processes of establishment and maintenance of lysogenic state have been isolated, according to complementation test. The phages differ in following characters: 1) in morphology of mature phage particles (C and B types, according to Bradley classification); 2) in sizes and genome organizations: DNA of PP56 is permuted (up to 30%), its size is 45 kb, the size of terminal redundancy being 2.5 kb; there is no permutation in PP71 DNA of 48 kb and it has "cohesive" ends; 3) no DNA/DNA homology is shown in tests between PP56 and PP71 DNAs. All the data obtained permitted to consider the phages PP56 and PP71 to belong to different unrelated species (families).

TEMPER: an acronym for ankle sprain rehabilitation.

As has been previously discussed, the incidence and resultant associated disabilities of ankle sprains have been well documented in the literature. The staggering statistics on long-term disability show that there is no such thing as a simple ankle sprain. The degree of disability is related to the extent of the initial injury as well as the follow-up medical care provided. It is this fact that requires a complete understanding of the injury as well as a proper treatment and rehabilitation program. One of the reasons cited for the long-term disability or lack of consistently good results in treating ankle sprains is the lack of uniformity in treatment. One possible reason is the lack of agreement in diagnostic techniques as well as the end diagnosis of a particular grade of ankle sprain. If a sprain is managed correctly, resultant disability will be kept to a minimum. A proper rehabilitation program may be the most important factor in preventing chronic instability. The acronym RICE falls short of complete ankle management. RICE primarily addresses the ankle edema. Thus, the patient's ankle is only partially rehabilitated. A rational approach to the management of ankle sprains is given. Upon reviewing a complete protocol for ankle sprain rehabilitation, the acronym TEMPER can be used judiciously to remember the key steps in the treatment plan. Through the use of this acronym, one can institute a complete rehabilitation program.

Integration of a temperate phage infecting Spiroplasma citri.

A physical map of the genome of a temperate Type 3 spiroplasma-virus, ai, has been constructed. Host DNA has been digested with restriction enzymes, and recombinant DNA clones of ai fragments in coliphage M13 vectors have been used as probes to detect viral DNA sequences integrated into spiroplasmas. All strains of Spiroplasma citri examined contained a deleted form of ai integrated as a cryptic prophage which was unable to confer resistance to ai superinfection. Stable ai lysogens also contained a complete ai genome. We propose that the infecting viral DNA circularizes and integrates adjacent to the cryptic prophage in a site-specific recombination event at unique points in both the virus and host genomes.

[Transducing activity of the temperate SM bacteriophage of Pseudomonas aeruginosa].

The temperate bacteriophage SM is not serologically related to the known transducing phages F116, G101, B3 of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The strains with auxotrophic mutations within the wide ranges of the genetic map of P. aeruginosa strain PAO1 were used for studying the transducing activity of the SM phage. All of the 7 bacterial markers tested are transduced with SM phage grown on a prototrophic donor strain. The frequency of transduction of separate bacterial markers using the wild type SM phage is 2.3 to 4.6 X 10(-8). Linked ilv202+ - met28+ markers are cotransduced with SM phage at a frequency of about 1.5%.

[Virulent and temperate phages of Bacillus licheniformis, the producer of bacitracin antibiotic].

Virulent and temperate bacterial phages were isolated from the cultural broth of Bacillus licheniformis obtained under the industrial conditions when synthesis of the antibiotic bacitracin was interfered with. The following properties of the phages were studied: the fine structure, the morphology of negative colonies, the spectrum of lytic action, the rate of adsorption, the individual growth cycle, as well as the lysogenic state of certain strains of Bac. licheniformis. Some phages were serologically related and morphologically identical whereas others differed sharply in their morphology and antigenic properties.

[Participation of temperate phages LP52 and BL20 in the control of bacitracin synthesis in Bacillus licheniformis].

The synthesis of the antibiotic bacitracin in lysogenic and nonlysogenic strains of Bacillus licheniformis 1001 and ATCC10716 has been studied. The antibiotic activity was shown to be about 20% less in lysogens, as compared to nonlysogens. However, the level of bacitracin production was completely restored when temperate bacteriophages BL20 and LP52 were reintroduced into the nonlysogenic strains by virtue of genetic transformation with DNA from lysogenic strains or by transduction with LP52. This may indicate that both phages take part in control of the synthesis of bacitracin. For the time being, the mechanism of regulation is not known. It is likely to be either direct (provided that prophage DNA contains "bacitracin" genes), or indirect.

[Phenomenon of temperate phage restriction and modification in a lysogenic culture of Streptomyces hygroscopicus].

Temperate phages were isolated from the lysogenic culture of Streptomyces hygroscopicus 0485 in the indicator cultures of Str. hygroscopicus 0477 and Str. levoris 1331. The phages were found to be identical in the morphology of particles and serological properties. The phenomenon of cross limitation, by the culture of Str. hygroscopicus 0477, of the phage growing on the culture of Str. levoris 1331, and vice versa, was established. At the same time, the phages were shown to be modified by the host cell.

[Supercopy plasmid based on the replicon from the temperate N15 bacteriophage].

Mini-plasmids, based on the N15 temperate bacteriophage replicon, are described. One of these, N15-203 linear 13.8 kb plasmid, has anomalously high copy number--more than 250 per one bacterial chromosome and the amount of plasmid DNA comprises about half of the total DNA of a cell. This property of N15-203 plasmid is realized only in the strain lysogenic for a N15 phage and is lost for the circular deletion versions of N15-203. The efficiency of transformation of E. coli C (N15) strain is essentially the same for N15-203 and pUC4K plasmids. Insertion of foreign DNA with a size up to 20 kb into BgIII cloning site of N15-203 plasmid does not decrease significantly efficiency of transformation calculated per number of DNA molecules and the total amount of plasmid DNA in a cell. N15-203 plasmid may be used as a vector for molecular cloning of relatively large DNA fragments, and in those biotechnology processes when productivity depends on a vector's copy number.
