Purified dense-centered form of 1 bovine strain (LW613) and 3 ovine strains (B577, 034-EYE, and 047-EYE) of Chlamydia psittaci and 1 murine strain of Chlamydia trachomatis (MoPn) were dissociated in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and 2-mercaptoethanol. The number of polypeptides detected in the 5 strains varied between 17 and 20, with a molecular weight range of 29,000 to 120,000. Two polypeptides predominated and comprised approximately a third of the total protein in each of the 5 strains. The average molecular weights of the 2 polypeptides were 89,000 and 85,250 for 4 of the strains, and the polypeptide molecular weights were 100,000 and 98,000 for the ovine abortion strain (B577). Molecular weights and proportional composition of the polypeptides permitted differentiation of the chlamydial strains. The 3 strains from naturally occurring conjunctivitis or polyarthritis (LW613, 034-EYE, and 047-EYE) had similar polypeptide profile in the 75,000 to 100,000 molecular weight range. The polypeptides of the ovine abortion strain (B577) differed significantly from these 3 strains. Eight of the polypeptides of this strain had a molecular weight of 100,000 or greater, and 3 of the predominant polypeptides were in excess of 100,000. In contrast, some of the polypeptides of the murine strain had lower molecular weights than the 4 other strains. Three predominant polypeptides had molecular weights below 50,000.

Posthitis was diagnosed as an economic problem of Angora wether goats. Affected goats had a scabby or ulcerated prepuce, with a distorted or pinhole preputial orifice. Some goats were able to urinate only by excessive straining. Cultural examination revealed a Corynebacterium sp capable of hydrolyzing urea, similar in all respects to the organism associated with a similar problem with Merino wethers in Australia. Necessary predisposing factors are considered to be a castrated animal consuming a high protein diet and infection with the urea-hydrolyzing organism.

Man and sheep were examined for scab mites infestations. Two types of mites were recovered, Sarcoptes scabiei and Psoroptes ovis. In sheep, 197 out of 939 (20.98%) were infested with S. scabiei (4.05%) and P. ovis (16.93%). The highly infested sheep were recorded in El Hassanah (28.22%) and the least infested ones were in Al Arish (15.85%). In man, 69 out of 790 (8.7%) were infested with S. scabiei (8.1%) and P. ovis (0.63%). The highly infested patients were recorded in El Hassanah (16.2%) followed by Rafah (11.7%), Bir Al-Abd (7.8%), and the least infested one was recorded in Al Arish (4.3%). In man, infestation was seen on one site in 15 patients (21.7%), on two sites in 32 patients (46.4%) and on more than two sites in 22 patients (31.9%). The highly infested site was the upper limbs followed by the lower limbs. Infestation on the face and ear, genital organs and abdomen were also encountered. Infestation on two sites was predominant on the upper and lower limbs followed by the lower limbs and genital organ. The results indicate that transmission of both scab mites, S. scabiei and P. ovis from sheep to man do occur. Infestation with scab mites was high in shepherds (79.7%) than in non shepherd patients (20.3%). However, man was more susceptible to S. scabiei than to P. ovis.

From 1986 to 1988 a sero-epidemiological survey was carried out in Mali by ILCA to identify the small ruminant main respiratory viruses. The results of this investigation shows an endemic condition. Regardless of the virus species involved, neutralizing antibodies were detected in adults as well as in young stocks. New researches are necessary to set forth a consistent and effective policy of prophylaxis or treatment according to the case concerned.
