A comparative study of hysterosalpingography (HSG) and laparoscopy in the investigation of infertility is presented. From 1973-1977, 352 cases were investigated with both HSG and laparoscopy. In 57.67% of the cases there was complete agreement between HSG and laparoscopy. The study included 168 cases of unexplained infertility and 184 cases with abnormal hysterosalpingographic findings. Pelvic adhesions were demonstrated in 151 cases by laparoscopy as compared to 76 cases in which its presence was only suspected by HSG. Laparoscopy revealed a 57.14% of associated pelvic pathology in cases of unexplained fertility. The present study concludes that laparoscopy as compared to HSG is not only more informative, but also more accurate and conclusive.
Penile carcinoma is rare in Senegal representing 0.35% of all cancers and 0.97% of cancers in the male adult. Neonate circumcision widely used in this country seems to prevent this disease. With this series of 11 cases, clinical and therapeutical aspects are reviewed.
OBJECTIVE: Aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of andrologic diseases in young men (age 18 years) recruited for conscription in a north-western Italian region. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A random sample of 1993 young men was evaluated at the Army Medical Visit Center of the Military District of Genoa. The visits were performed by the same doctor. An examination of external genitalia and secondary sex characters was made and the medical history of each conscript was recorded. Investigation procedures were standardized according to the guidelines of the WHO for the diagnosis and management of the infertile male. RESULTS: Andrologic disorders were found in 547 subjects (27.5%) and first diagnosed in 412 (20.7%). Specific acquired or congenital disorders are discussed. Some patients with most significant diseases were referred to the Urologic Department for second level diagnostic exams. CONCLUSION: This study underlines the role of the army medical visit as a tool for andrologic screening in young males. The military health service may be a relevant institution for postpuberal control and it could be useful to prevent future sexual and fertility problems in adult males.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the diagnosis and treatment of penile carcinoma in circumcised men. METHODS: We reviewed 17 cases of penile carcinoma detected 1 month to 16 years after circumcision performed in our hospital from January, 1997 to December, 2004. RESULTS: Of the total number, 11 cases were diagnosed as penile carcinoma 1 - 12 months and the others 3 - 16 years after the circumcision. Sixteen of them were treated by partial penectomy, anti 1 first by extensive circumcision and later by partial and total penectomy successively after recurrence. Cloquet nodes biopsy showed 16 cases to be pathologically well-differentiated and I case moderately differentiated penile squamous carcinoma. One died of extensive metastasis, but the other 16 remained disease-free survivals. CONCLUSION: Circumcised adult men, especially those over 40 years of age, are likely to develop penile carcinoma. Patients with inflammation, plaque or ulcer in the prepuce should be checked by pathological biopsy and followed up closely. For Stage-I penile squamous carcinoma, partial penectomy is shown to be an effective therapeutic option, and Cloquet's nodes biopsy is necessary for all patients.

We describe a patient who developed superficial necrosis of the glans penis from irritation after topical treatment with 1% gentian violet. The foregoing condition resolved after withdrawal of treatment. A differential diagnosis (sexually transmitted diseases, epidermoid carcinoma, etc.) is warranted on finding this type of lesion in the glans penis.

From 1978 to 1987, 93 new patients with condyloma acuminata visited urological clinic of our hospital. Among them, 16 patients (17%) were teenagers. The number of teenage patients increased gradually year after year as the total number of patients increased. The proportion of females in teenagers was slightly higher than that in adults. Condyloma in male teenage patients frequently occurred around the cornal sulcus. The site of condyloma in female teenage patients were labia minora and anus. None of other sexually transmitted diseases except for urethritis accompanied condyloma. All patients underwent electrocautery. None of teenage patients showed recurrence of condyloma in contrast with relative high recurrence rate (19%) in adult patients.

2582 surgical operations on children - principally abdominal hernias and phimoses - are reported. Inpatient treatment required a stay of 3.2 days, 430 children were treated as outpatients. The 11 pediatricians working in the afflux area unanimously judged the shortened stay in hospital positive. Of the parents interviewed, only 1.3% did not agree with the short hospitalization and 4.8% disagreed with the outpatient therapy. The well-known psychic disturbances of small children by admission to hospital confirmed. The economic importance of a stay which can be reduced by 10 days compared with the present average is pointed out.
