[Zoohygienic parameters in different types of sheep houses].

Investigations were carried out to establish to what extent optimal microclimate conditions were provided for sheep on premises of different building-and-construction design developed after projects of Balkanstroy, Polimerstroy, Agropromproekt, and those of the type of Trun. It was found that the investigated buildings did not provide optimal temperature-and-moisture regime for the animals in the winter season because of their unsuccessful construction design and the insufficient heat isolation of their construction elements. The lack of ventilation equipment as well as the ineffective use of the existing fans and the incorrect technologic process also led to the deterioration of the air medium within the buildings.

[Industrial hygiene for subway train operators].

Subway train drivers work in specific conditions of underground surroundings, face psychoemotional stress due to high intensity of signals analyzed in short time for the decision, prominent responsibility for passengers' lives. The work is also associated with significant levels of noise, minor artificial illumination, air pollution with dust and unfavorable microclimate. By the end of working shift the drivers demonstrate marked changes in blood pressure, prolonged oculomotor reactions, depressed visual function. Morbidity with transitory disablement is high among the drivers, presenting especially cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases. Unfavorable changes of ageing process are seen in the drivers over 35, in age group of 40-49 years (with length of service at least 20 years). The complex investigations helped to elaborate hygienic norms for new subway cars, to base rational schedule ot work and rest for the drivers.

[Development of rational work schedules for tunnel workers of schist mines].

The tunnelers of schist mines boring blast holes with hand drill are exposed to the discontinuous vibration and noise, which markedly exceed the MAL (12 and 11 dB respectively). Though the time of exposure is reduced by mechanization, it exceeds the safe limits due to unequal shift load on the tunnelers team. The improved working schedule includes equal cyclic participation of every tunneler in the boring and limits the contact with vibration and noise. High risk of vibration disease in tunnelers even following the allowable time of contact with hazards can result from such confounding factors as cooling microclimate, intensive physical strain. The recommendations reduce the duration of employment to 7 years and necessitate mastering two allied occupations.

[Working conditions and health status of women employed in clay brick industry (in subtropical climate)].

The workers engaged into clay brick production in subtropic climate are exposed to dust and heating microclimate. Scientific and technologic progress has a great positive influence on the improvement of work conditions in the stated production. Respiratory diseases turned out to take the first place in the structure of morbidity with transitory disablement. The clinical studies established the correlation between the work conditions and gynecologic morbidity, occurrence of complicated pregnancy and delivery, impaired physical development and health status of newborns and children. The methodic documents and prophylactic recommendations are worked out.

[Changes in the functional state of the central nervous system during physical work using individual protective means at different environmental temperatures].

Integral parameters were applied to studies of functional status of the central nervous system (CNS) in humans exposed to physical work using individual protective means in heating (30 degrees C) and cooling (10 degrees C) microclimate. Peculiarities of changes in CNS functional status were proved to depend on the origin of factors and their combinations. Factors appeared to compete with each other and final results can depend on domination of the certain factor.

Microclimatic effect on vertical migration of Haemonchus contortus and Haemonchus placei third-stage larvae on irrigated Kikuyu pasture.

The influence of microclimate on numbers of third-state larvae of haemonchus contortus and Haemonchus placei in four strata of irrigated Kikuyu pasture was assessed. On 36 different, interspersed days three replicates of pasture samples were collected on three occasions per day from 1990-1992 for larval recovery and the log10 mean counts of the larvae recovered were analysed by use of ANOVA models. Because the ground-surface area from which herbage was collected was standardized, estimated larval counts for the different strata could be compared; this was not possible in our previous studies. For H. contortus, the estimated larval counts in the four strata were predicted by microclimatic air temperature, relative humidity and soil moisture, with the coefficient-of-determination (R2) values ranging from 0.15-0.35. Of these, air temperature had the greatest effect. The same three predictors, together with illumination and wind speed, featured for H. placei, with R2 values of 0.19-0.52. With the exception of wind speed and illumination, which (for H. placei) had the opposite effect, all the microclimatic parameters listed, predicted an increase in numbers of larvae from a lower to an upper strata.

[The clinical manifestations of heat-induced lesions in miners in the deep coal mines of the Donets Basin].

Heat-induced lesions in miners are characterized by syndrome of vegetovascular dysfunction presenting with a damage to the segmental and suprasegmental structures of the vegetative nervous system, worsening of the bodily heat status, decrement of physical performance. A distinguishing feature of vegetovascular dystonia in acute overheating is activation of sympathicus, while in chronic one that of parasympathicus. By patterns of function disorders and degree of their restoration acute overheating can be categorized into the following forms-mild, moderately severe and severe ones. In chronic overheating distinct syndromes are recognized depending upon the particular course of vegetovascular dysfunction, viz., permanent course vegetovascular dystonia, permanent paroxysmal one presenting with varying trend vegetative crises, apparent persistent bradycardia and syndrome of weakness of sinoatrial node. Acute overheating is more commonly seen in those miners with as yet little service duration while chronic overheating occurs more frequently in those persons with more than 8-year record of service in conditions of heating microclimate.

[Medical aspects of the use of gas jets with infrared irradiation for heating of industrial accommodations].

Up-to-date research, results of experimental and pilot studies of gas radiative heating helped to justify hygienic, sanitary and technical requirements concerning air quality in heated compartments, to determine values of infrared irradiation on various body sites, that are not hazardous for human functional state. Radiation doses received by the workers are set in accordance with ambient temperature decrease compared to the normal values in convective heating systems. The authors adjusted parameters of microclimate in compartments heated by gas radiative systems and some methods evaluating the ambient air.

Effect of ionization on the variable uptake of valacyclovir via the human intestinal peptide transporter (hPepT1) in CHO cells.

Carrier-mediated transport of valacyclovir (vacv), the L-valyl ester prodrug of acyclovir (acv), via the human peptide transporter (hPepT1) has been shown in Xenopus laevis oocytes and in cell lines such as Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) and Caco-2 transfected with the hPepT1 gene. However, significant differences in vacv uptake were observed in those models as extracellular pH varied. The purpose of this work was to characterize the interactions of various ionic species of vacv with the peptide transporter by overexpressing the transporter gene, hPepT1, in CHO cells. Based on the pK(a) values of vacv, it was determined that vacv exists as four different ionic species (di-cationic, cationic, neutral and anionic) with a predominance of cationic and neutral species at physiologically relevant pH conditions. Vacv uptake was shown to increase with increasing pH of the extracellular medium from 5.5 to 7.2. The uptake value was maximal at around pH 7.2 and did not vary for studies done at higher pH. Vacv uptake was concentration dependent and saturable at all pH conditions (5.5, 6.2, 6.8, 7.5 and 7.9) with apparent Michaelis-Menten constants, mean (S.D.), of 7.42(0.32), 6.64(1.20), 5.38(0.88), 2.69(0.23) and 2.23(0.33) mM, respectively. The current results demonstrate that the estimated affinities of the cationic and the neutral species of vacv with hPepT1 are significantly different (7.4 versus 1.2 mM, respectively). Given the axial and radial (microclimate) pH gradients known to exist in the intestine, the greater than six-fold difference in affinity constants suggests that intestinal pH fluctuations may significantly impact upon the variability of vacv uptake.

Dissolution kinetics of carboxylic acids I: effect of pH under unbuffered conditions.

The dissolution behavior of benzoic acid, 2-naphthoic acid, and indomethacin from rotating compressed disks into aqueous solutions of constant ionic strength (mu = 0.5 with potassium chloride) at 25 degrees was investigated. The pH of the bulk aqueous medium was maintained during dissolution by means of a pH-stat apparatus. A model for the initial steady-state dissolution rate of a monoprotic carboxylic acid was derived from Fick's second law of diffusion. This model assumed that diffusion-controlled mass transport and simple, instantaneously established reaction equilibria existed across a postulated diffusion layer. Using previously determined intrinsic solubilities, pKa values, and diffusion coefficients, the model was found to predict the dissolution rates of these acids accurately as a function of the bulk solution pH. Hydroxide ion and water were the only reactive base species present in the bulk solution. The concentration profiles of all of the species across the diffusion layer were generated for a given bulk pH. Furthermore, the model generated values for the pH profile within the microclimate of the diffusion layer and the pH at the solid-solution boundary.
