We present a descriptive study of 1221 cancer deaths among Libyans in Benghazi for the period 1991-96. The cancer mortality rates per 10(5) person-years at risk for males, females and both sexes were 39.8, 26.5 and 33.3 respectively. The age-standardized cancer death rate per 10(5) standard world population was 91.5, 60.0 and 76.5 respectively. The 10 most common cancer deaths by site (comprising 67.7% of the total), in descending order of frequency, were: trachea, bronchus and lung, blood (leukaemia), colon/rectum, other lymphatic and haemo-poietic tissue (lymphomas), stomach, breast, prostate, liver, bladder, and larynx. The results point to the necessity for conducting comprehensive prospective studies, initiating a cancer registry and establishing a national cancer control programme.
BACKGROUND: Cystinuria is an autosomal recessive disease that is manifested by the development of kidney stones. Mutations in SLC3A1 cause type I disease, while mutations in SLC7A9 are associated with non-type I disease. In Israel, cystinuria is especially common among Libyan Jews who suffer from non-type I disease. OBJECTIVES: To compare clinical manifestations of patients with mutations in SLC3A1 to those with mutations in SLC7A9, and to assess the carrier rate among unaffected Libyan Jewish controls. METHODS: Clinical manifestations were evaluated in patients with mutations in SLC3A1 and in patients with mutations in SLC7A9. Carrier rates for two SLC7A9 mutations were assessed in 287 unaffected Libyan Jewish controls. RESULTS: Twelve patients with mutations in SLC3A1 were compared to 15 patients with mutations in SLC7A9. No differences were detected between the patients with mutations in SLC3A1 and those with mutations in SLC7A9 in relation to the age of disease onset, the estimated number of stones, the number of invasive procedures, the number of patients receiving drug therapy, or the patients' urinary pH. Eleven of the unaffected Libyan Jewish controls were found to be heterozygotes for the V170M mutation, establishing a carrier rate of 1:25. The 1584 + 3 del AAGT mutation was not found in any of the Libyan Jewish controls. CONCLUSION: Mutations in SLC3A1 and SLC7A9 cystinuria patients result in indistinguishable disease manifestations. The high carrier rate among Libyan Jews is a result of a single missense mutation, V170M.
This paper presents the results of a prospective study cutaneous liashmaniasis in 2 schools in Al-Badarna, during the period from July to December 1992. The pupils were interviewed and examined. Positive cases were referred to the Health Unit for treatment. Of 260 pupils 22 (8.46%) were found to be infected with active lesions.
Semen analyses was carried out in a population of 1250 randomly selected Libyan males. Two semen samples collected from each volunteer were subjected to the routine analyses following the World Health Organization recommendations. The Libyan population had a higher percentage of men with sperm density in the range of 40-60 millions/ml. The percentage of men with sperm counts above 100 millions/ml is comparatively lower than that is reported by MacLeod and Gold (9). The seminal plasma transferrin levels showed a positive correlation with sperm density and alpha-glucosidase activity with sperm motility.

We investigated the bacteriology of urinary calculi in relation to urinary tract infection, stone formation, chemical composition and antibiotic sensitivity. Fifty-two patients (37 males, 15 females) with urolithiasis were studied. Urine, serum and urinary calculi specimens were taken and serum biochemical tests to detect uric acid, calcium and phosphorus were performed. Urine analysis and culture were also performed. Of the 52 patients, 19 (37%) had associated urinary tract infection, with Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis being the most common causative microorganisms. The bacterial isolates from urine and those from calculi differed in their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. We conclude that in over 50% of patients with urolithiasis, urine culture can detect the infecting organisms associated with stone formation and the organisms within urinary calculi.
This cross-sectional study examined the growth and nutritional status of Libyan preschool children and the socioeconomic status of their parents in 2000 and compared the results with those of a similar study conducted in 1979. The investigation involved 1614 healthy children of both sexes under 5 years of age in two regions of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. Simple random sampling and cluster sampling techniques were used to enlist participants. Body weight, height, and head and arm circumference of the children were recorded and mothers were interviewed about their child's health and the socioeconomic status of the family. Significant improvements in nutritional status since 1979 were found that could be attributable to factors such as socioeconomic development, longer breastfeeding, greater availability of high energy foods, supplementation with semi-solid or solid foods and heavy government subsidy of basic foods.
Management of anticoagulant therapy after mechanical valve replacement is difficult in developing countries because of patient non-adherence. The effect of depression on adherence to drug therapy and to a clinic visit schedule was evaluated for 62 patients who received prostheses. All were prescribed a once-per-day regimen of warfarin and were scheduled for three appointments at the anticoagulant clinic for dose adjustment at 3-week intervals. According to the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, 22 were depressed. Non-depressed patients were more compliant than depressed patients; adherence was inversely correlated with depression scores. While depression had no relationship with age, sex and cardiac symptoms, there was a relationship with anxiety and poor social support.
This cross-sectional study was performed in two regions of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. The aim was to study the growth and nutritional status of children under 5 years of age and the effect of socioeconomic factors on child development. Anthropometric indices (weight-for-age, height-for-age and weight-for-height) differed in the two regions. The prevalence of stunting was significantly higher among children from mainly rural Al Jabel Al Garby (6.1%) than those from urban Tripoli (2.5%). The z-scores that correlated strongly with under-nutrition included: mother's education, child's age and sex, and region. Stunting was significantly related to age and region and to maternal education level and family size. Wasting was highly correlated with maternal education.
