[Physical exercise and food habits: a study of adolescents in Cádiz].

BACKGROUND: A increased number of eating disorders among teen-agers are currently being reported. Physical exercise, especially when done individually, is one of the methods chosen for losing weight. We are basing this study on the hypothesis of a larger number of eating habit disorders (EHD's) in subjects who do physical exercise alone. This study describes and compares eating habits among teen-agers that do individual exercise as opposed to athletes who work out in groups or on teams. METHOD: Cross-section study of 532 teen-agers ages 14-18 who are enrolled in school and who do physical exercise, having been selected at random by means of a two-stage, stratified sampling process. The subjects were divided into two groups according whether they did individual physical exercise alone (Number: 216) or in groups (Number: 316). The eating habits of both groups were analyzed based on a questionnaire filled out by the subjects themselves. RESULTS: In the group preferring individual sports, females were predominant (degree of males 0.44). Of these females, their being on diets in order to lose weight was 3.12 times more frequent, compulsive eating episodes being 3.73 times more frequent. As regards behaviors which might be considered to be compensatory, there is a clear concentration thereof among those who do sports individually, hence 43% stated to voluntarily undergo periods of fasting (4.96 times more than those who exercise in groups), 46% stating to have brought on vomiting at one time or another for "dieting" purposes (3.76 more) and up to 26% have used laxatives with the intention of losing weight (2.56 times more than among athletes who play on teams). CONCLUSION: The existence of EHD's seems to be associated with teen-agers who play individual sports as opposed to those who play on teams.

[The influence of the water potential in the root-habitable area on the efficiency of the higher-order plants].

In a set of 8 experiments, in leaf mustard Brassica junceae L. (cult. Volnushka) and in soft wheat Triticum aestivum L. (cult. Super Dwarf) there has been studied dynamics of accumulating biomass in the ontogenesis in accordance with the value of water potential in the root-habitable medium. Besides, in wheat there has been investigated the process of forming the grain crop capacity in a period between V and XII stages of the organogenesis from Kuperman's classification. The plants have been grown in the root modules with the perlite used as a substitute for soil and with water supply through the porous hydrophilic membranes. The levels of water potential in the root-habitable medium, namely in the perlite, were kept unchanged in the range from -0.5 to -13 kPa (or from -5 to -130 cm water column) which corresponded to volumetric humidity ranged from 63 to 25%. Tests exposition was in the range of 13 to 78 and 25 to 46 days for wheat and mustard, respectively. The value of upper limit of an allowable water potential was determined from the magnitude of critical pressure of the puncture at which the most large through pores in the perlite layer break free of water, the value of lower limit was determined after criterion of a significant decrease in the plants harvest. In accordance with the paper results an allowable range of water potential in a perlite-based root-habitable medium ranged from -1.0 to -2.0 kPa which was in agreement with the range of volume humidity from 61% to 51%. In decreasing the water potential beyond the lower limit of mentioned range to -3.0 kPa, the mass of mustard shoots has reduced by 30% and the wheat crop was not good. The elaborated procedure and equipment can be used for determining the thresholds of permissible water potentials (humidity) for any soil substitutes irrespective of the construction of root module and the species of cultivated plants.

Iron deficiency anaemia and adverse dietary habits in hospitalised children.

AIMS: To determine the prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia in children hospitalised with acute illness and the frequency of adverse dietary habits in the children with iron deficiency anaemia. METHODS: This was a prospective study of all children, aged 9 to 23 months resident in metropolitan Auckland who were hospitalised at Starship Children's Hospital, from July to October 1997, with an acute medical illness and had a full blood count performed. Iron deficiency anaemia was defined as haemoglobin <110 g/L, red cell distribution width >14.5% and either serum ferritin <10 microg/L or transferrin saturation <10%. Ethnicity and dietary habits of the children were determined by interviewing parents. RESULTS: During the study period 284 children, aged 9 to 23 months were admitted, of whom 206 (73%) had a full blood count performed. Sixty (29%) of these 206 children had iron deficiency anaemia. A larger proportion of Pacific Islands (P) compared to Maori (M) or European children (E) had iron deficiency anaemia. (P vs M:43% vs 21%, p=0.01; P vs E:43% vs 14%, p<0.001; M vs E 21% vs 14%, P=0.27). Sixty-nine percent of the children with iron deficiency anaemia had a dietary factor (early introduction of cows milk, late introduction of meat or regular consumption of tea) likely to have contributed to their iron deficiency. CONCLUSIONS: Iron deficiency is prevalent in Auckland children aged 9 to 23 months, hospitalised with an acute illness. The prevalence varies with ethnicity. Adverse dietary habits are present in 69% of the children with iron deficiency anaemia.

[Influence of dietary habits and body weight on blood uric acid in the elderly].

Influence of dietary habits, body weight on blood uric acid was studied in 416 elderly people. The result showed that level of blood uric acid in the people who had habits of drinking alcohol, tea and taking hot foods was higher than that who never had those habits (P < 0.05 or 0.01). It also showed that level of blood uric acid was significantly increased in the over-weight or obesity people (P < 0.05). The hyperuricemia incidence in the over-weight or obesity people is 27.4 per cent, and it is 2 times and 3.4 times of the people with ideal weight and weak-weight, respectively. It is suggested that the patients with gout or hyperuricemia give up drinking alcohol, tea and taking hot foods for their health. Reducing body weight is one of the effective measures to prevent and treat gout or hyperuricemia in the elderly.

[Nutritional information for children to modify the food habits of the whole family].

The prevention of weight gain and cardiovascular diseases is probably easier, less expensive and more effective than treating these diseases after they have fully developed. The hypothesis of a prospective intervention study in northern France, the "Fleurbaix Laventie Ville Santé Study" is that nutritional education of children aged 6-12 years at school may not only improve their nutritional knowledge but also influence the dietary habits of the family. We have conducted an information program in school for these children and made an evaluation of the educational program used in this study and the modification of the dietary habits. The first results indicate a better nutritional knowledge in children of Fleurbaix and Laventie versus control children. The families have better dietary habits consuming less fat, more carbohydrates. In women the BMI is less important in Fleurbaix and Laventie compared with the control subjects. This study is on going with a 10 year-follow up taking into account the spontaneous evolution in a control town.

[Development of smoking habits in the population of the Czech Republic from 1985 to 1997/98].

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking belongs to high risk factors for the circulation diseases. Aim of the present study is to identify and describe smoking habits of the population in nine districts in Czech republic in years 1997/98 and in six of these districts to analyze smoking trends during the period of 1985-1997/98. METHODS AND RESULTS: Information on the smoking habits were collected in years 1985, 1988, and 1992 in six districts which took part in the international project WHO MONICA. In 1997/98 data collection was extended into three other districts. New randomly selected samples of 1% of the population were explored each time. 5293 males and 5610 females 25-64 years old were questioned during a controlled talk with a health-officer. In 1997/98 in nine districts the prevalence of actual smokers was 38%, that of former smokers was 24% and 38% of non-smokers. The group of females consisted of 27% of actual smokers, 10% of former smokers, and 63% of non-smokers. The average daily consumption was 16.4% (+/- 8.6) cigarettes per day in males and 11.3 (+/- 7.0) cigarettes per day in females. In 1985-1997/98 the smoking prevalence of males aged 25-64 years decreased in six districts from 49% to 37% (p < 0.001). No changes were detected in females of the same age group (28% in 1985, 26% in 1997/98). Decreasing tendency was observed in both males and females up to 45 years old, in males also in the age group 55-64 years. In females older than 45 years the smoking prevalence increased. Significant changes in the smoking prevalence were found when samples were analyzed according to the education level. In males with basic education and among skilled workers the smoking prevalence decreased in years 1985-1997 from 53% to 42% (p < 0.05), among males with secondary education smoking prevalence decreased from 45% to 33% (p < 0.01) and in graduates from 34% to 23% (p < 0.01). In females with basic education the smoking prevalence increased from 25% to 31% (p < 0.05), among females with secondary education it decreased from 34% to 21% (p < 0.001), in graduate females it decreased from 31% to 18% (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Present situation and 13 years long development of smoking habits differs in males and females. Higher prevalence was found in males as well as the daily consumption of cigarettes. Since 1985 the male smoking prevalence has decreased in age groups 25-64 years and in age and education level subgroups. Only partial decrease of the female smoking prevalence was observed in age group till 45 years and in subgroups with secondary education and graduates. Significant increase in the smoking prevalence among females with basic education as well as the finding that women do not quit smoking with increasing age my become an important information for preventive programmes.

Habitability research priorities for the International Space Station and beyond.

Advanced technology and the desire to explore space have resulted in increasingly longer manned space missions. Long Duration Space Flights (LDSF) have provided a considerable amount of scientific research on the ability of humans to adapt and function in microgravity environments. In addition, studies conducted in analogous environments, such as winter-over expeditions in Antarctica, have complemented the scientific understanding of human performance in LDSF. These findings indicate long duration missions may take a toll on the individual, both physiologically and psychologically, with potential impacts on performance. Significant factors in any manned LDSF are habitability, workload and performance. They are interrelated and influence one another, and therefore necessitate an integrated research approach. An integral part of this approach will be identifying and developing tools not only for assessment of habitability, workload, and performance, but also for prediction of these factors as well. In addition, these tools will be used to identify and provide countermeasures to minimize decrements and maximize mission success. The purpose of this paper is to identify research goals and methods for the International Space Station (ISS) in order to identify critical factors and level of impact on habitability, workload, and performance, and to develop and validate countermeasures. Overall, this approach will provide the groundwork for creating an optimal environment in which to live and work onboard ISS as well as preparing for longer planetary missions.

[Selected indices of nutritional status and food habits among young ballet dancers].

The work has been aimed at assessment of nutritional status on the base of some selected anthropometric factors and at evaluation of food habits among schoolchildren of the ballet dance school at Gdańsk. The 58 boys and girls were examined. The height, body mass and body fat were measured, and the Body Mass Index values calculated. The results were compared to those obtained among children at Poznań and Kielce. The survey of food habits was made with the especially prepared questionnaire. The substantial deficiency of body fat and relatively low body mass were observed. The BMI value below 18 was found for 35% of subjects, and between 20 and 25 only for 23% of subjects. The wrong food habits were found, especially low number of meals and their irregular consumption.

[Evaluation of occupational risk factors, nutritional habits and nutritional status in industrial workers].

The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between selected risk factors at the workplace and health indices in relation to nutritional habits and nutritional status in industrial workers. Exposure to physical and chemical risk factors and their impact on health in the province of Szczecin and in Poland was evaluated basing on data published in the Yearbooks of the Province of Szczecin, the Central Statistics Bureau (GUS) and Regional Inspectorate of Labor (OIP) in Szczecin. A random selection of plants in Szczecin was done and workplaces with chemical and physical risk levels exceeding the highest acceptable values were identified. Measurements of concentrations of chemicals and intensity of physical factors were performed by Work Environment Research Laboratories of the plants and by the laboratory of the Sanitary and Epidemiological Center in Szczecin. Eighty-eight men exposed to occupational risk factors were randomly selected. The mean period of exposure in that group was approximately ten years. The control group was composed of male workers (n = 83) not exposed to any of the risk factors in question (Tab. 3). Nutritional habits and nutritional status were studied during summer/autumn and winter/spring periods. Dietary survey consisted of the last 24-hour nutrient intake questionnaire. Nutritional status evaluation was based on body mass index (BMI) values and results of the following laboratory tests: blood cell count, levels of total protein, prealbumin, retinol binding protein (RBP), magnesium, inorganic phosphorus, and ascorbic acid. The following results were obtained: 1. Physical factors constituted the most frequent source of occupational risk in the province of Szczecin and in Poland in 1990-1994 (Tab. 1); 2. The incidence of occupational risk and occupational disease morbidity rates in 1990-1994 were lower for the province of Szczecin than the average for Poland; 3. The rate of fatal accidents at work in 1982-1994 was higher for the province of Szczecin than the average for Poland (Tab. 2); 4. Differences in dietary habits between the study and control groups were not statistically significant; 5. Statistically significant differences as to levels of prealbumin (Tab. 6), inorganic phosphorus (Tab. 7) and ascorbic acid (Tab. 8) between the study and control groups were found. In conclusion, conditions at the workplace should be improved, efforts to reduce exposure to physical and chemical risk factors should be intensified, and a healthy lifestyle should be promoted among industrial workers.

A study of the influence of occlusal factors and parafunctional habits on the prevalence of signs and symptoms of TMD.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of the clinical signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and the relationship between occlusal factors, parafunctional habits, and TMD in a young adult nonpatient population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire including data from a history and clinical functional examination was used in the study. All 230 subjects were male recruits, from 19 to 28 years of age (mean 21.3 years). RESULTS: Thirty-eight percent of the subjects reported at least one symptom, while in 45% of the subjects at least one sign of TMD was recorded. Temporomandibular joint clicking (40%) and pain on palpation (34%) were the most commonly recorded signs. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed several weak but statistically significant correlations between the occlusal factors, parafunctional habits, and TMD in this nonpatient population. TMD signs were thus weakly correlated with malocclusion traits (angle Classes II/1, II/2, III, and cross bite), interferences in retruded contact position, midline discrepancy > or = 2 mm, < or = 10 contacts during maximal biting pressure, nonworking-side interferences, horizontal overlap > or = 5 mm, and parafunctional habits (teeth clenching and teeth grinding). CONCLUSION: Some association between occlusal factors and TMD signs was found. However, this association cannot be considered unique or dominant in defining subjects with TMD in the population.

Dietary habit profile in European communities with different risk of myocardial infarction: the impact of migration as a model of gene-environment interaction. The IMMIDIET Study.

The risk of myocardial infarction (MI) is lower in southern than in northern European countries. The lower rate of MI in the Mediterranean regions of Europe suggested a potential role of the traditional Mediterranean diet in the prevention of MI. Unfortunately, in the last 20 years, a tendency to adopt Westernised food habits even in southern regions of Europe is reflected by an increase in the prevalence of obesity. Therefore the impact of diet on MI risk profile among European populations needs to be reconsidered. Genetic risk factors have also been implicated in the development of MI. Genes, indeed, continuously interact with environmental factors in determining the pathogenesis of MI. The aims of the IMMIDIET study are to evaluate: 1. The present dietary habits and the risk profile of three European communities at different risk of MI; 2. The impact of migration on risk factors for MI. Dietary habits and genetic polymorphisms will be evaluated in an Italian, Belgian and British population sample. The historical Italian migration to Belgium and the integration through mixed marriage will be considered as a model of gene-environment interaction. As an index of MI risk profile, factors that are most likely under the combined influence of both dietary and genetic determinants will be investigated.

Smoking habit in pregnancy and sociodemographic background in six Italian centres.

Studies carried out in foreign countries (US and UK, mainly) indicate that maternal characteristics, such as age, parity, social class, and prenatal care, are related to child's growth, mortality, and morbidity, as well as to cigarette smoking. These characteristics may act as confounding variables in the analysis of the effects of maternal smoking on babies in fetal and neonatal periods. Until now there has been a lack of information on the subject, because even the most recent available data concern women over age 14 regardless of obstetric history. This paper deals with smoking habits, before and during pregnancy, of 37,664 women included in a multicenter survey of perinatal preventive medicine (MPPI), which was performed in 6 Italian centres (Trieste, Milan, Parma, Rome, Naples, Bari) between 1973 and 1979, with the financial support of the Italian National Research Council. The results of the MPPI and other surveys are compared and the association between maternal smoking habits and sociodemographic background is investigated by multiple correspondence analysis. As to Italy, unlike UK and US, in the 1970s women of high social status show the highest prevalence of the smoking habit. Moreover, in pregnancy, the large majority gives up smoking, or at least reduces it, mainly in high socioeconomic levels, so that the proportion of pregnant women who keep on smoking over 10 cigaretts per day is very low (0.5-3.8%) and poorly related to sociodemographic factors. Therefore, it seems unlikely that these may exert serious confounding effects on the relationships between smoking in pregnancy and perinatal outcome.

Smoking habits of office-based general practitioners and internists in Austria and their smoking cessation efforts.

Tobacco smoking is the major cause of lung disease. This study aimed to determine: 1) the prevalence of tobacco smoking among office-based physicians; 2) their readiness to inquire about their patients' smoking habits and, if need be, to motivate them to stop smoking; 3) whether non-smoking doctors advise their patients more frequently to stop smoking than their smoker colleagues do. A self-designed questionnaire on a post card was sent to 7674 office-based general practitioners (GPs) and internists. 1395 (18.2%) questionnaires were returned. Independent telephone interviews with 91 doctors were also carried out to minimize the bias of self-presentation. Just under 11% of doctors were smokers. About 50% of all doctors who responded described themselves as ex-smokers. 38% of the smokers would accept outside help to stop smoking. About 50% of GPs and 90% of internists inquire about the smoking habits of their patients during history taking. Of these, 85% of GPs and 92% of internists recommend their patients to stop smoking. Doctors who themselves are smokers do so less than their non-smoker colleagues. For this reason, a further reduction in the smoking prevalence among doctors would be of special importance. Inquiry about smoking habits in the initial history taking should be stressed more to identify any smoker who can be subsequently encouraged to stop smoking.

[Erratic feeding habits in infants and secondary diseases: findings from a caseload of 440 patients].

The alimentary habits have been analyzed in 440 infant with acute and chronic disease of nutrition. It has been observed a high incidence of dietetic mistakes, whether qualitative or quantitative. These mistakes appeared in correlation with the poor cultural and socio-economic conditions of the population. The Authors compare the observed pathology with the wrong alimentary habits conditioned by low social context and suggest an adequate prophylaxis of infant's nutrition disease, thorough better alimentary habits in childhood and better life conditions of the population.

Nutrition and education. III. Educational achievement and food habits of Chilean elementary and high school graduates.

The objective of this study was to correlate the educational achievement (EA) of Chilean elementary and high-school graduates with their food habits. For this purpose, a random sample of 550 schoolers from the Metropolitan Area of Santiago, Chile, graduating from elementary and high school (1:1) of both sexes (1:1), from public and private schools and from high, medium and low socioeconomic status (SES) (1:1:1), was selected. Food habits were determined through a specially designed questionnaire and defined as the frequency of consumption of the food groups, expressed as days per week. The EA was established through the Achievement Evaluation Program (AEP) and Academic Aptitude Test (AAT) in elementary-and high-school graduates-, respectively. Results revealed that EA was found significantly and positively correlated with the frequency of consumption of dairy products, meat products and eggs, in both elementary and high school graduates. A significant and inverse correlation between EA and the frequency of vegetables and fruits consumption was observed in both educational levels, and with miscellaneous products, only in elementary school graduates. Food habits explained 24.4% and 16.6% of the EA variance, in elementary and high school graduates, respectively. The frequency of consumption of dairy products was the independent variable with the greatest explanatory power in EA variance (approximately above 70% of the explained variance). These results are important to consider for educational planning focused on the School Feeding Program.

[Diffusion of smoking habit in the commune of Florence in 1989].

The results of a study on smoking habits of Florence inhabitants (14 years of age or more) are reported. A random sample of general population of the town (1744 males and 1977 females) was recruited throughout the registration office and interviewed by mail or telephone. General compliance was approximately 85%. Thirty-seven percent of males and 25% of females were current cigarette smokers, 29% of males and 11% of females were ex smokers. Males were heavier smokers both as concerns duration of the habit and daily amount of cigarettes. In males born after 1930 the smoking prevalence decreased gradually by period of birth, while it increased in females born before 1960. As a result the smoking habits of younger cohorts were similar in males and in females. In each sex age-adjusted smoking prevalence showed important differences by educational groups and in respect to national averages.

[The tobacco habit among fishermen of the Barbate coast (Cádiz)].

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, in scientific spheres, it is unquestionable that tobacco damages health. We study the introduction of tobacco habit among inshore fishermen of Barbate (Cádiz), for we consider that this is a highly receptive population to tobacco use because of hard work and its low socio-cultural level. METHODS: A transversal descriptive study is carried out in order to determine the prevalence of tobacco use in this population. With this purpose, a questionnaire of 26 variables (epidemiological, sociodemographic and related to tobacco use) has been elaborated; 207 fishermen, equal to 10.35% of the whole inshore fishing fleet of Barbate, have been surveyed. RESULTS: The mean age of the sample is 39.9 years, with distribution per age groups from 16 to 65 years. The result of the survey carried out is an smoker percentage of 81.15% among the fishermen of the inshore fishing fleet of Barbate. CONCLUSIONS: It is obvious that this population has an important deeply rooted tobacco habit. Anyway, our results are similar to those obtained by other Spanish authors when they study tobacco habit in fishermen.

[Cross-sectional survey on the nutritional and life-style habits of secondary school students in Hungary].

INTRODUCTION: The national representative survey of secondary school students (age: 15-18 years) was undertaken between 1997 and 2000. The authors presented the data related to the nutritional and life-style habits. METHODS: The data for 6,347 students (48.4% boys and 51.6% girls) were evaluated. The anonymous questionnaire contained inquiries on nutritional rhythm, food frequency, use of vitamin and mineral supplements, smoking, alcohol and drug consumption habits, regular physical activity and family background (qualification, smoking, alcohol consumption). Within the frame of personal interviews the authors collected data on students' history with regard to occurrence of diabetes mellitus, other chronic diseases and in girls the time of the first menstruation. Concerning parents' history the authors collected information on the incidence of hypertension, myocardial infarction, diabetes mellitus, and stroke. STATISTICAL EVALUATION: Data were recorded in Data-Ease database system, in forms of individual records. The individual records were converted to be suitable for the statistical evaluation by SPSS for windows 9 statistical program pack. Data are presented as means and percent distribution. RESULTS: The nutritional rhythm of students was irregular. The daily consumption of milk, dairy products, fruits, fresh vegetables and vegetable dishes was insufficient. Eighty percent of students added extra salt to foods. More than 49% of students regularly consumed some forms of vitamin and/or mineral supplements. Thirty five percent of boys and 30% of girls smoked daily, 14.6% of boys and 5.9% of girls consumed alcohol at least once a week. Fifteen percent of boys and 11% of girls already tried taking drugs at least once. Only 50% of boys and 31% of girls were involved in a regular physical activity. Twenty two percent of fathers and 25% of mothers had university qualifications, whereas intermediate qualifications were recorded in 63 and 59%, lower qualifications occurred in 8 and 13% of parents, respectively. The incidence of smoking was 42% for fathers and 36% for mothers. Weekly alcohol consumption was recorded in 11%, daily consumption in 7% among fathers, the same figures for mothers were 4-4%, respectively. The incidence of hypertension, myocardial infarction, diabetes mellitus, and stroke was 26; 3.4; 5.4 and 1.5% in fathers and 32.9; 4.2; 6.6 and 1.5% in mothers. CONCLUSIONS: The data collected in the complex nutritional hygienic survey revealed serious deficiencies in the nutritional and life style habits of secondary school students. These factors considerably contribute to the unfavorable statistics of nutrition related non-infectious diseases in adulthood.
