Urinary bladder carcinogenesis by N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl)-nitrosamine in an analbuminemic congenic strain of rats with an ACI genetic background.

An analbuminemic congenic strain of rats originating from ACI (ACI-alb) rats was established. The rats were found to be highly susceptible to induction of urinary bladder cancer by N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxy-butyl)nitrosamine. Bladder cancers were observed in all male ACI-alb and normal ACI rats treated with the compound, but the average weight of the bladder including tumors was more in ACI-alb rats than in ACI rats (0.63 +/- 0.24 g and 0.18 +/- 0.05 g, respectively; ratio, 3.5:1).

The C57BL/6 nu/nu lpr/lpr mouse. I. Expression of the 'lpr phenotype' in the C57BL/6 genetic background.

The C57BL/6 lpr/lpr mice develop within 3-6 moths a series of abnormalities of their immune system which characterize the 'lpr phenotype' and allow them to be distinguished easily from normal C57BL/6 as well as from C57BL/6 nu/nu: lymphadenopathy, hyperimmunoglobulinemia, high anti-nuclear antibody titers and, less regularly, anti-whole DNA antibody. Though C57BL/6 nu/nu occasionally present auto-antibody too, the combined use of three or four of the aforementioned parameters for each tested animal allows an easy detection of animals presenting the lpr phenotype. In our C57BL/6 lpr/lpr colony, the lymphadenopathy does not seem to start by chance in any lymphoid organ but shows a very strong preferential occurrence in the cervical lymph nodes. These parameters of the lpr phenotype have been used to trace the lpr genes and to construct the C57BL/6 nu/nu lpr/lpr as described in the companion paper.

A survey of susceptibility to infection with Trichinella spiralis of inbred mouse strains sharing common H-2 alleles but different genetic backgrounds.

Twenty-eight different inbred strains of mice representing five different H-2 haplotypes were compared for degree of susceptibility to a primary infection with Trichinella spiralis. Marked differences in susceptibility, measured by the average number of muscle larvae per host, were seen among strains of mice sharing common H-2 alleles. The genes controlling these differences must therefore map at loci outside the major histocompatibility complex. Strains of mice sharing the H-2k haplotype were generally more susceptible than strains expressing other haplotypes and strains expressing H-2q alleles were most resistant. Strains of mice were ranked in order of decreasing susceptibility. Knowledge of these ranking may be of value to researchers wishing to select strains of mice appropriate for studies on T. spiralis.
