[Spilopsyllus cuniculi fleas--parasites of the wild rabbit on the territory of the USSR].

In colonies of wild rabbits in the south of the Ukraine (environs of the city of Kherson) and in the Crimea (near the city of Belogorsk) there were found in masse fleas of Spilopsyllus cuniculi (Dale). The highest abundance of these parasites in spring, its decrease in summer, minimum in early autumn and rise by winter, as well as great abundance of the parasites on pregnant doe rabbits, correspond to regularities which were observed in other parts of S. cuniculi distribution area.

[The epizootiological significance of flea accumulation in aggregations of the female long-tailed suslik in the Tuva plague focus].

The formation of aggregations of related females is a peculiarity of the intrapopulational organization of long-tailed suslik that results in the accumulation of Citellophilus tesquorum, the main vector and keeper of the plague microbe in the Tuva plague nidus. The plague agent is adapted to the existence on the territory occupied by aggregations of females that manifests itself in the delay of the beginning and prolixity of block-formation periods in fleas. The transfer of the agent from one place to another takes place only at the high abundance of long-tailed suslik. When the number of the suslik is low the plague microbe circulates in the ranges of one or several neighbouring aggregations of females having no possibility for successful transfer to a new place.

[The distribution of fleas of the genus Xenopsylla in the Ustyurt].

The distribution areas of the main plague vectors of Xenopsylla fleas (X. skrjabini, X. gerbilli, X. nuttalli) in the Ustyurt are given for the first time. They are found to be of great practical significance in the evaluation of the epizootic situation.

[Observations of the sand flea (Tunga penetrans) in humans and dogs in French Guiana].

The occurrence of sand fleas (Tunga penetrans) in a reservation in the north of French Guyana is described. The parasite is found on dogs, Europeans and children of the local Indian tribes. Infections in man are supported by a big population of stray dogs as well as by the local cottage construction. Due to the simultaneous efficiency against the larvae of Dermatobia hominis lvermectin is only of limited suitability for the treatment of tungiasis in dogs. In man single parasites can be removed with a splinter forceps. In dogs footbathing with 0.2% Neguvon has shown to be effective. On long term a reduction of the stray dog population is recommended.

[Hemolymph cells of fleas and their phagocytic activity].

The present paper concerns 4 groups of haemolymph cells of fleas (proleukocytes, leukocytes, trophic cells and oenocytoids), results of observations on their phagocytic activity during parenteral infection of insects with bacteria, bacilli, and cells' response to the infection with Microsporidia.

Parasites of domestic and wild animals in South Africa. XIX. Ixodid ticks and fleas on rock dassies (Procavia capensis) in the Mountain-Zebra National Park.

Five or 6 rock dassies (Procavia capensis) were shot at monthly intervals for 13 consecutive months in the Mountain Zebra National Park and processed for arthropod parasite recovery. Ten species of ixodid ticks and 2 flea species were recovered. The seasonal prevalence of the rock dassie ticks, Haemaphysalis hyracophila and Rhipicephalus distinctus, and of the immature stages of Rhipicephalus arnoldi, a tick that usually infests the red rock rabbit (Pronolagus rupestris), was determined. Only 10 of the approximately 10 000 ticks recovered from the rock dassies belonged to species that may infest domestic livestock.

Double-blind flea hyposensitization trial in cats.

In a double-blind clinical trial, flea antigen was injected subcutaneously or intradermally in cats with signs of fleabite allergic dermatitis. No significant clinical improvement was noted by the investigator or the owner in either antigen-treated or control groups over a 20-week period.

[Trial of the action of synthetic juvenile hormone analogs on fleas].

H-chlorphenyl ether of geraniol (1.5 to 0.05 %) caused the mortality of all preimaginal stages of fleas of the species C. anisus. 0.025 % dose of the preparation broke the normal course of metamorphosis that resulted in the delay of moulting periods of larvae, the formation of cocoons and hatching of imagos. All these deviations reduced the emergence of adults by to 90 %.

[Flea allergy and proligestone].

In a small animal practice, 126 cats were given combined treatment with proligestone and an ectoparasitic agent for flea allergy during a period of ten months. Complete recovery (81%) or very marked improvement (10%) were observed in 91% of the cases.

[Fertility of the flea, Xenopsylla gerbilli Minax, that parasitizes the great gerbil (Aphaniptera)].

It has been established experimentally that the fecundity of females of Xenopsylla gerbilli minax is wavy in its character from the beginning to end of their reproduction (peaks are replaced by falls). In spring and summer the egg laying proceeds on the 2nd--3rd day after the first bloodsucking of fleas and lasts to the end of their life. In autumn the first eggs develop on the 4th--6th day and do not develop at all at the end of the life. In winter months the egg production is somewhat slowed down but with the coming of spring become more intensive. Progeny obtained from one female during the experiment varies, depending on the conditions of the maintenance, from 20 to 130 individuals.

[Some new fleas of Chile (Siphonaptera) parasites of Ctenomys (Rod., Octodontidae)].

The authors examined 355 fleas of 9 species from Chili. These were collected from 7 species or subspecies of Ctenomys (Rod., Octodontidae). Tiamastus callens and Polygenis platensis cisandinus are new for this country; Tetrapsyllus maulinus sp. n., Plocopsylla fuegina sp. n. and Plocopsylla reigi sp. n. are described in this work.

[Digestion of blood by Leptopsylla segnis fleas].

The digestion of blood by L. segnis was investigated by hystological and hystochemical methods. The protease activity in the stomachs of these flease was found to be very high. After the feeding erythrocytes do not stick together and fibrin precipitates only in a shape of filaments. As a result a dense clot of formed elements and plasma-proteins does not appear. Hemolysis of erythrocytes in adult fleas (maintained 7 to 10 days in the nest with the host prior to the test) ceases within 15--20 minutes while in young ones (up to 24 hours old)--within 1--1.5 hour.
